The family of Kathleen Blanco has told the Advocate that the state’s only female governor is not on the verge of passing. Previous reports said Blanco had entered into hospice. The family says while she is not able to walk, she still visits friends and loved ones by getting around on an electric scooter. The family defined the care as “hospice assistance” and say she is no longer seeking treatment for her cancer.

School voucher advocates are hoping the legislature doesn’t come after their 40 million dollar program to pay for the Governor’s requested 39 million dollar public school funding increase. Matt Doyle has more.

The GoFundMe campaign for the three historically black churches burned down in St. Landry parish has surpassed two million dollars. The website says over 37-thousand people have donated money to help rebuild the churches. The Seventh District Baptist Association says 100-percent of all funds will be evenly distributed to the three churches affected.

With this being Easter weekend, the demand for crawfish reaches its peak, but President of the Crawfish Research and Promotion board David Savoy says mudbugs are not hitting the traps like they should, so the supply is lower than normal for an Easter weekend…

Ugly game for the 14th ranked LSU baseball team last night as they were soundly defeated 16-9 in game one of their three-game set against Florida. Ma’Khail Hilliard got the start for the injured Zack Hess and gave up six runs in two innings. The Gators hit four home runs on the night as LSU’s losing streak has reached four games. Game two of the series is tonight at 7 PM.

Louisaina Tech also lost last night as Marshall scored six runs in the last two innings to beat the Bulldogs seven to three. Tech got a great start from Matt Miller as he allowed one run in seven innings, but the bullpen couldn’t hold a two-run lead. Tyler Follis, Braxton Smith and Kyle Griffen were all touched up for runs.

The Ragin Cajuns Gunner Leger also had a tough night as he couldn’t hold on to a 8-4 lead in the eighth inning as Texas-Arlington rallied for a nine to eight walk off win. Leger allowed five runs on five hits for his third loss of the season.

New LSU AD Scott Woodward will be formally introduced on Tuesday and we’ll get to hear his ideas on improving Tiger athletics. Many athletic directors are dealing with declining attendance at college football games. Louisiana Tech has announced an eight-person class that will be enshrined into the Louisiana Tech Athletics Hall of Fame in October. The headliners of the class are all-american running backs Ryan Moats and J-W Slack, legendary football coach Joe Raymond. Also going into the Hall, seven-time track and field All-American Chelsea Hayes and Eddie Holman, the Bulldogs baseball career wins and strikeout leader.

Ann Duplessis is the president of the Louisiana Federation of Children, which is an advocate for the state’s voucher program and she says more money might not be the answer for the state’s pulbic schools…

Duplessis says 96-percent of families involved in the state’s voucher program are pleased with their child’s academic progress at their new school.

The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s office says they’ve charged a 54-year-old man with manslaughter in the fatal shooting of 13-year-old Robert Stevenson. Deputies say the teenager was shot in the chest during a disturbance that took place outside of a home in Natalbany. Ricky Nelson of Indpendence was taken into custody.

The latest data released from the Louisiana Survey shows majority support for both legalized sports betting as well as the legalization of recreational marijuana use.  LSU Public Policy Research Lab Director Dr. Mike Henderson says sports betting received support from 59% of residents while recreational marijuana received the approval of 55% of residents.

Henderson says there is a big generational gap on recreational pot support.  A majority of support comes from younger residents.  80% of those ages 18-29 support the idea of legalization, but those 65 and older showed a 69% opposition.

Legislation to legalize sports betting in Louisiana is up for discussion in the session.  Governor Edwards has voiced his support for the activity.  Henderson says in addition to the latest data, there is a history of public opinion in the state that would indicate support.

A tornado watch is in effect for this afternoon for much of south Louisiana, a portion of central Louisiana and delta parishes in northeast Louisiana. National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Efferson says the big concern is that the unstable atmosphere has the potential of producing strong tornadoes…

Ground has been broken on the 450-million dollar Comite River Diversion project. It’s a 12 mile long canal running from the Comite to the Mississippi River, diverting water out of northern East Baton Rouge Parish waterways that present a flood risk for E-B-R and Livingston parishes. Central Mayor David Barrow says it’s long overdue.

Locals have been paying taxes towards a diversion project since 1983, but the construction just kept getting pushed back as the state’s backlog of flood prevention initiatives grew larger and larger. Barrow says at least now there appears to be an end in sight.

The canal would run between the town’s of Baker and Zachary.

But the Mayor was quick to note that even after it’s completed, it’s still possible the area could flood, it just likely will not be as devastating as the 2016 event.

Construction is expected to be complete by 2021.

Baton Rouge native Scott Woodward is the new athletics director at LSU. The LSU grad will be formally welcomed back on Tuesday. Woodward was the director of LSU’s external affairs from 2000 to 2004 and most recently the A-D at Texas A-and-M.

LSU has officially announced that Scott Woodward is the university’s next athletic director. Woodward has been Texas A-and-M’s athletic director since 2016 and also had the same job at Washington for eight years. Woodward is a Baton Rouge native and previously worked at LSU as the director of external affairs from 2000 to 2004.

Weather permitting, LSU baseball is set to host Florida tonight and there’s a chance injured starters Chris Reid and Zach Watson can return to the field during this series. Coach Paul Mainieri says he’s not sure how effective Watson will be, but it would be great to get the center fielder back on the field…

The Louisiana SPCA is advising families don’t purchase a rabbit as a gift for Easter, unless you are really prepared to take care of the animal. The organization receives dozens of bunnies after the Easter holiday from owners with buyer’s remorse. Louisiana SPCA spokesperson Rebecca Melanson says there are great alternatives to giving bunnies and baby chickens as gifts at Easter…

At the Capitol, a bill has been filed that seeks to guarantee all Louisianans 12 weeks of paid family or medical illness leave. A group called Louisiana Families First is push for support for the proposal. A small payroll tax would help pay for a state run program that would hand out partial checks to workers on leave. Louisiana Families First spokesperson Caitlin Berni says 82 percent of those polled were on board with his concept
