In 2012, the Seawolves upset the Tigers in a Super Regional Series. LSU basketball coach Will Wade spoke publicly today for the first time he was suspended on March 7th. Wade told reporters covering the SEC Spring Meetings in Destin, Florida that it’s been a couple of difficult months for the basketball program. But Wade says allegations of illegal recruiting were thoroughly addressed with LSU administrators and NCAA officials.

Southern is in the NCAA Baseball Tournament for the first in 10 years and they will head to Starkville to play Mississippi State on Friday afternoon. Senate Finance has approved a spending plan for next fiscal year that contains a one-thousand dollar teacher pay raise and 39-million dollars in block grant funding for school districts. The House budget proposal calls for a higher pay raise for teachers, but no additional dollars for public schools. Council for a Better Louisiana President Barry Erwin says lawmakers have until June 6th to agree on a budget

An 11-year-old boy has been charged with negligent homicide following the shooting death of his 9-year-old brother in a Baton Rouge home on Saturday.  Authorities believe the shooting was unintentional. Legal analyst Franz Borghardt says the complexities of the case raise more questions on if the charge will stick.

Borghardt says the child will be tried in the juvenile system and he could be released to his parents without making a bond or he could receive a juvenile life sentence, meaning he would be detained up until he turns 18.

The investigation continues into the shooting and the parents are not facing charges.  Borghardt says without facts and data in place, it is a difficult call on how to charge the parents.

The Louisiana House is set to vote this afternoon on a bill that would ban abortions once a fetal heartbeat is detected, which is around six weeks of pregnancy. Kentucky, Mississippi, Ohio and Georgia are among the states that have passed similar anti-abortion legislation and the measures are facing court challenges.

There’s about a week and a half left in the legislative session and a bill to bring sports betting to Louisiana has yet to pass. It died in the legislature last year and Metairie Senator Danny Martiny is trying to make sure it doesn’t happen again….

Researchers at LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center is participating in a study that’s looking at why Southerners in some rural parishes live longer, healthier lives than other parishes, even though the two parishes share similar poverty levels and racial composition.

LSU will face Stony Brook on Friday night in a rematch of the 2012 Super Regionals that was won by the Seawolves. The Sun Devils are the two seed and they lead the country with 91 home runs. The Golden Eagles are the three seed and they are led by Matt Wallner and his 21 home runs.

McNeese State is a three seed in the Nashville Regional and the Cowboys will face Indiana State at noon. It’s the Cowboys fifth NCAA Regional appearance and the first since 2013. The other two teams in that regional are top seeded Vanderbilt and Ohio State is the four seed.

The Southern Jaguars are in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 10 years and they’ll play Mississippi State at noon on Friday at Dudy Noble Field. The Jaguars won just nine games last season and second-year coach Kerrick Jackson is proud to bring a winner back to Southern….

Stony Brook will be back in B-R this weekend for the Baton Rouge Regional hosted by LSU. The Tigers and Seawolves will face each other Friday night at 6 PM in the Box.
