Legislators have until 6 o’ clock tonight to finish their work for the 2019 session. They have to pass a budget, but there are no contentious battles there. There are still discussions occurring behind closed doors regarding fantasy sports tax and regulation bills and whether they should include sports betting legislation.

It’s been a wild weather day across south Louisiana. Heavy rainfall fell this morning in southwest Louisiana and it arrived just in time for the morning commute in Baton Rouge. The system has also spawned a few suspected tornadoes. Livingston Parish Sheriff’s office spokesperson Lori Steele says they have teams surveying the wind damage…

The Army Corps of Engineers has canceled Sunday’s planned opening of the Morganza Spillway. A new date has not been set, increasing the possibility that a portion of the Mississippi River will not have to be diverted into the floodway.

South Louisiana was swamped today with a severe weather system creating localized flooding and even tornadoes. State climatologist Barry Keim says the system dumped dangerous amounts of water on some communities…

One person died during the heavy rain event in Baton Rouge when their car flooded. Keim says the severe amount of rainfall was more than initially predicted, but this whole weather system has been unusual from the start.

Keim says another inch of rain could fall tomorrow, which may not sound like much but…

He adds that the chance for severe weather will drop off significantly by Saturday, but we could still be in for rain and thunderstorms potentially into early next week.

Political analyst Clancy DuBos says Governor Edwards has terrific momentum heading into the fall governor’s election after a successful legislative session.

Dubos says the 1,000-dollar teacher pay raise, the 39 million in new education spending, and tens of millions of dollars in new infrastructure funds for New Orleans may win Edwards a second term.

Education saw a 140-million-dollar total increase in new funding, while New Orleans will get a 50-million-dollar funding injection, with an additional 27 million a year from redirected revenue generated by the hospitality industry.

But Edwards is taking some hits from his left flank as many pro-choice Democrats fume over his signing of one of the nation’s most restrictive abortion bans. DuBos suspects those voters will still turn out for the Democrat.

Severe weather impacting southeast Louisiana has produced road flooding and reports of a tornado outbreak.  East Baton Rouge Parish Mayor-President Sharon Weston Broome says the flood waters resulted in one death, adding the heaviest rains came today during rush hour traffic.

Some areas of the parish have received up to five inches of rain since last night with reports of possible tornado damage.

Livingston Parish Sheriff’s spokesperson Lori Steele says teams are surveying the wind damage from what is believed to be a tornado outbreak in various areas of the parish.

Some areas that saw flooding in 2016 are also experiencing issues today.  Steele discourages residents from sightseeing as many roads are impassable due to water and fallen trees.

As of noon, thousands of Entergy and DEMCO customers are without power.

Southeast Louisiana is under a tornado watch until 5 PM.

The state legislature approves a constitutional amendment that would allow voters on the 2020 Presidential ballot to put into the state constitution that it does not protect the right to an abortion. Franklinton Senator Beth Mizell says it’s necessary to prevent a rogue Louisiana judge from protecting the right to an abortion…

The amendment does not provide an exception for rape or incest, which upsets pro choice advocates.

The Saints are giving former Governor Kathleen Blanco its Fleur de Lis Award for spearheading the effort to fix the Superdome after it was damaged by Hurricane Katrina. Blanco, who is currently battling cancer, was on hand for the announcement.

After an intense debate, the Senate gave final legislative approval to a measure that will give voters a chance in 2020 to decide if the state constitution should make it clear it does not provide a right to an abortion. Governor Edwards signed a separate anti-abortion law last week that would prohibit abortions when a fetal heartbeat is detected by doctors.

A bill awaiting the governor’s signature would use 700-million dollars in BP oil spill settlement money to pay for several road projects around the state. Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says politically it’s a double-edged sword…

Reggie Bush and Marques Colston were drafted in the same class and now they’ll enter the Saints Hall of Fame together. The two important cogs of the 2009 Super Bowl team will be inducted in October. Both Bush and Colston were drafted in 2006, a draft class instrumental in the Saints winning the Super Bowl. Bush was the second overall pick, while Colston was drafted in the seventh round. Colston says that speaks volumes on how the organiziation evaulates players…

Two more LSU Tigers were drafted on the final day of the Major League Baseball draft. LSU’s all-time hits leader Antoine Duplantis went to the New York Mets in the 12th round. Earlier in the draft, the Mets also took Jake Mangum who is the all-time SEC hits leader. In the 32nd round, the Royals took catcher Saul Garza, who is expected to return to LSU next season.

ULM had three players selected in the Major League Baseball Draft, third baseman Chad Bell went in the 19th round to the Yankees, Seattle selected right fielder Trent Tingelstad in the 22nd round and left-handed pitcher Trey Jeans went in the 33rd round to the White Sox.

McNeese also had four players drafted in the final round. Shane Selman selected in the 21st round to the Oakland As, Carson Maxwell in the 25th round to Arizona, and the Chicago Cubs took pitchers Cayne Ueckert and Bryan King.

The NCAA is pushing the three-point line in men’s basketball back to the international distance, which is 22 feet, 1 3-quarters inches. The three point line has been 20 feet, nine inches since the 2008-09 season.

Reggie Bush and Marques Colston will be inducted into the Saints Hall of Fame in October. Former Governor Kathleen Blacnco will receive the Fleur de Lis award for her contributions to the Saints organization. Bush and Colston were drafted in 2006, months after Hurricane Katrina devasted the city and the two helped the franchise win their only Super Bowl in 2009.

Colston is the team’s all-time leader in catches, receiving yardage and total touchdowns.

Blanco led the effort to repair and improve the Superdome after it was damaged by Katrina, which allowed the Saints to return to the Dome in 2006 after playing home games in New York, Baton Rouge and San Antonio in 2005.

Dates and times are set for the Saints four preseason games. New Orleans will host Minnesota on August 9th at 7 PM, visit the Chargers on August 18th for a 3 PM kick-off. Take on the Jets in New York at 6:30 on August 24th and then host Miami in the preseason finale on August 29th at 7.

The LSU-Florida State Super Regional Series will begin Saturday at Alex Box Stadium. The Seminoles are much like the Tigers, they had high expectations prior to the season, but struggled during the year and they’ve gotten hot at the right time. The voice of Florida State baseball team Eric Luallen says the Noles are led by slugging third baseman Drew Mendoza, who has hit 16 home runs…

The team is also playing for its legendary coach Mike Martin, who has won over two-thousand games, but is still searching for that elusive national title and he’ll retire when this season comes to an end.

The NCAA announces that the three-point line in men’s basketball will move back to the international distance, which is 22 feet, 1 3-quarters inches. The Association’s playing rules oversight panel approved the rule change, which will be in place next season.

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness  encourages Louisiana residents to prepare for heavy rainfall.  National Weather Service Lake Charles forecaster Stephen Carboni says southwest Louisiana will get the worst of it today.

Carboni says the rain is the result of an area of disturbed weather over the southwest portions of the Gulf that at one time was monitored by the National Hurricane Center for possible tropical development.

The state is already dealing with high river levels and the rain will add to the flooding risks. Carboni says they have this message when street flooding occurs.

The legislative session ends on Thursday at 6 PM and it seems unlikely a bill to bring legalized sports betting to the state’s casinos will pass. Metairie Senator Danny Martiny blames House Appropriations Chairman Cameron Henry for leading the effort to kill his sports betting bill. Henry says 14 members in his committee voted against the bill…

Martiny’s bill would establish a vote so voters can legalize sports betting in their parish. Several unfriendly amendments were added to the bill in House appropriations and it was deferred. Henry says with the clock ticking, the legislature shouldn’t try to ram this through…

An LSU poll conducted earlier this year found that 59-percent of Louisiana residents support legalized sports betting. Gretna Representative Joe Marino says the legislature should give the public a chance to legalize sports betting

Legislation allowing those with a medical marijuana prescription access to an inhalable form of the treatment is headed to the governor’s desk. Baton Rouge Representative Ted James says the pill or oil-based forms of the treatment sometimes are not fast-acting enough to respond, such as an episode of PTSD…

Proponents add that inhaling the product does not mean patients are smoking it like recreational marijuana.

The legislation had trouble getting Senate approval. But James says legislators minds were changed after senators started receiving calls from constituents who had experience with the treatment in other states…

As it stands though there are no forms of medical marijuana, inhalable or otherwise, available to the public as a regulatory dispute involving the Department of Agriculture and the grower has stalled the crop’s growth. James says if this gridlock continues, the Legislature will intervene on behalf of patients.

A Taco Bell in Slidell ran out of both soft and crunchy taco shells on Monday.  One patron felt the snafu was an egregious violation and warranted a call to Slidell Police.  Slidell Police spokesperson Daniel Seuzaneau says initially the department thought it was a joke, but the caller insisted law enforcement should respond.

Authorities have posted their account of the story on social media, which has since gone viral with over 2,000 shares.  Seuzaneau says others have chimed in on Taco Bell’s inventory woes.
