A new NFL league year begins this afternoon and that’s when the two-year, 50-million dollar agreement between the Saints and Drew Brees will become official. With this contract, Brees will surpass more than 260-million dollars in career earnings.

The Saints have also agreed on contract changes with linebacker Kiko Alonso and cornerback Patrick Robinson.

Teddy Bridgewater is set to make a living in Charlotte. Bridgewater has been Brees’ primary backup the last two seasons but has reportedly agreed to a three-year, 60-million dollar contract with the Panthers. Carolina has announced that they are letting Cam Newton’s agents pursue a trade. Newton went on social media and said he’s being forced out.

And the newest quarterback in the N-F-C South appears to be Tom Brady. Brady announced yesterday he’s leaving New England after 20 years, but didn’t say where his career will continue, but multiple media reports say Brady is set to become a Buccaneer.

An HBO documentary called “The Scheme” will reportedly air the FBI wiretap conversations between LSU Coach Will Wade and middleman Christian Dawkins, who was convicted and sentenced to six months in prison for his role in a pay-for-play scheme involving recruits. Partial transcripts have been released that quoted Wade discussing a “strong offer” for a recruit. The documentary is set to air March 31st.

The SEC has canceled the remaining athletic contests for the 2019-20 sports seasons and that includes the Tigers spring football game on April 18th. Baseball Coach Paul Mainieri is trying to cope with the end of LSU’s season after just 17 games…

Senator Bill Cassidy says a growing number of lawmakers and the President back a plan to send every American a check in the next few weeks.

The restaurant industry is facing a difficult time as the spread of the coronavirus has prohibited the public from eating inside those establishments. Restaurants can still serve food via drive-thru, curbside or delivery. Louisiana Restaurant Association President Stan Harris says the industry is grateful for these exceptions…

The Louisiana Workforce Commission says the number of people to file unemployment claims was triple than the normal volume on Monday and Tuesday. Casinos, bars, gyms and movie theaters are closed for a month. The tourism industry is also taking a hit. L-W-C executive director Ava Dejoie says workers who are experiencing a temporary layoff or reduction in hours are encouraged to apply for benefits but keep in mind if you’re a 10-99 employees…

Backup Q-B Teddy Bridgewater is reportedly set to sign with the Panthers as Carolina is reportedly looking to trade Cam Newton. Newton said on Instagram that he never wanted to be traded and it’s the Panthers who forced this.

Could Tom Brady end up in the NFC South. Brady announced on social media today that he will play in 2020, but not with the New England Patriots. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Los Angeles Chargers are the most likely landing spots for the 42-year-old.

The Southeastern Conference announced today that the 2019-2020 athletic season is officially over as there will be no baseball or softball regular-season games. Spring football games and pro days have also been canceled. The league previously said that all competition was suspended until April 15th.

In a conference call with reporters, Athletics Director Scott Woodward says fans who had tickets to events that were canceled will get their money back, it just may take a little time…

Woodward says their focus also moves to the fall sports and the hope that football can start its season on time.

LHSAA Executive Director Eddie Bonine is still holding out hope that spring championships can be played and is willing to hold them in June if it is possible. Schools are shut down until April 13th so no games can be played until after that time.

Southwest Louisiana Congressman Clay Higgins releases a video aimed at Governor Edwards, criticizing his handling of the coronavirus pandemic.  Edwards ordered the closure of bars, movie theatres, casinos, and limiting restaurant service to carry out and delivery.  Higgins says it’s hard to comprehend the Edwards’s decisions.

Higgins tells the Governor just because he thinks he knows best, he shouldn’t be limiting the freedom of citizens.

Higgins says he won’t go down quietly about this and wants to know what statute the Governor plans on charging citizens with for violations.

The Governor’s office has responded saying Congressman Higgins clearly cares more about Facebook views than Louisianans.

The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education is seeking a waiver so they can cancel standardized exams for this year, which would also mean test scores would not be part of a teacher’s evaluation. BESE President Sandy Holloway says with schools closed until April 13th, this is the right thing to do.

Holloway says BESE and the Louisiana Department of Education are also crafting a letter to the United States Department of Education because they have the ultimate authority in granting any sort of flexibility.

BESE has already decided that annual school performance scores will not be announced next year. Holloway says certain requirements for graduating seniors have also been set aside…

The Louisiana Association of Business and Industry says state companies are getting hammered right now as a result of COVID-19 shutdowns.

LABI President Stephen Waguespack says the crisis is an existential threat to the state’s 450,000 small businesses that employ 900,000 people whose jobs are now threatened.

LABI is also encouraging residents to buy gift cards from local impacted businesses, and order online to support them. Waguespack says if you want to see those businesses reopen, you have to support them.

Waguespack is encouraging every Louisiana citizen to participate in the Giff Card Challenge. He says gift cards will give restaurants the cash they desperately need now.

But Congressman Clay Higgins is upset that the governor demanded certain businesses to shut down and wonders how the state plans to enforce it…

Law enforcement agencies issued a joint statement this afternoon that they intend to enforce the governor’s restrictions on public gatherings.

Small businesses will suffer as a result of this partial economic shutdown. Louisiana Association of Business and Industry President Stephen Waguespack is asking the public to purchase gift cards from their favorite local restaurants…

The state health department reported 35 new cases of coronavirus today and an additional death, bringing the death toll to four and there are now 171 cases. The governor’s office says two of the four victims are from the Lambeth assisted living facility in New Orleans.

Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain says the COVID-19 crisis is making it difficult for some people to take care of their pets. Strain says unless you absolutely cannot care for your pet, don’t turn it over to the state, or set it loose.

Strain says your pet can not be infected with COVID-19, but pets may temporarily harbor the virus on its coat or other areas of the pet’s body. He says if you are diagnosed with COVID-19, allow a family member to care for your pets.

And athletics director Scott Woodward says the financial impact of sports cancellations are not a concern, adding that ticket holders will see money coming back for games that were not played, it just may take a little time…

The state is reporting 136 cases of COVID 19 and the virus has been confirmed in eleven parishes. But Governor Edwards expects every parish will soon be impacted…

Edwards has banned public gatherings of 50 people or more. Senator Bill Cassidy, who is also a doctor, is urging residents to listen to the governor. He says these restrictions are the only way to minimize the number of lives lost.

State lawmakers have returned to their districts as the 2020 regular session has been suspended until March 31st. Lake Charles Republican Phillip Tarver is the only legislator to object because he says adjournment is the wrong message to send to citizens and they must continue to conduct the state’s business…
