You can now enter Texas and not have to self-quarantine for two weeks. The screening stations along the Texas-Louisiana borders are gone as the Lone Star State has rescinded its quarantine orders. Also, Carnival Cruise Line has announced it has canceled all cruises out of New Orleans this summer but will begin limit service on August 1st out of Miami, Port Canaveral, and Galveston.

Louisiana reported 20 new COVID-19 deaths yesterday, the smallest increase in weeks. The state’s death toll is just shy of two-thousand. The state also reported just new 200 cases, also one of the lowest single-day totals in weeks, The number of COVID-19 patients hospitalized decline by 15 to 1,530, the number of patients on ventilators increased by five to 213.

Former LSU running back Leonard Fournette will likely be a free agent after the 2020 season. The Jaguars declined to pick up the fifth-year option on the former fourth overall pick. Fournette will make four-point-one million dollars this season. He rushed for 11-hundred yards last season and also led the team in receptions with 76, but only scored three touchdowns.

The NFL is planning to release a 2020 schedule this week that would have the first regular-season game on September 10th and the Super Bowl on February seventh in Tampa. But the schedule will have contingencies built-in because of the coronavirus pandemic.

A couple of other notes, former Bengals quarterback Andy Dalton has signed with Dallas to be a backup to Dak Prescott. Former Calvary Baptist Quarterback Shea Patterson has signed as an undrafted rookie with Kansas City. Patterson threw for three-thousand yards, 23 touchdowns and eight interceptions for Michigan this past season.

Since the NBA has yet to complete its regular season, the league has decided not to hold its draft lottery on May 19th. The Draft combine set for May 19th to the 24th has been postponed as well. As of right now, the 2020 NBA draft is still scheduled for June 25th.

And ESPN is reporting there’s growing support to push the start of the 2020-21 NBA regular season to December. This will give the league more time in the hopes of getting fans back inside arenas.

One NBA general manager has told ESPN he’s concerned about the health of his head coach and his assistants because of his age if the league starts to resume the season. Some NBA facilities are allowed to re-open on Friday.

Lafayette native and former LSU star tied French pole vaulter Renaud Lavillenie for the gold medal in men’s pole vault competition held in their won yards. Each athlete cleared a height of 16 feet, 36 times over a span of 30 minutes in a broadcast by World Athletics on its social media channels.

The state health department reported just 20 more COVID-19 deaths yesterday bringing the state’s total to 1,969. How does that compare with the flu? Louisiana had a bad flu season between 2018-19 and the state reported 1,550 influenza deaths.

A Lafayette drug testing company reaches a deal with suppliers to provide a test that will show patients within ten minutes whether they have coronavirus antibodies. Global Data Fusion CEO Ed Roy says it only requires participants to give a small prick of blood from their fingertips.

Global Data Fusion Founder and CEO Ed Roy says the test process is easy and only requires participants to give a small prick of blood from their fingertip.

Data from Baton Rouge General showed of 432 anti-body tests conducted 4.4 percent were positive.

Having anti-bodies may indicate you are now immune to the virus but the FDA says that’s yet to be proven. Roy says if it’s true his supplier is prepared to mass-produce the tests.

Global Data Fusion is set to offer the test to hospitals and other companies and is not offering individual tests to the public. The tests, from a Chinese producer, will be shipped to Lafayette sometime this week.

ESPN reports an overwhelming majority of high-level officials in the NBA remain encouraged and optimistic that basketball will return this season. But fast and reliable testing for the coronavirus is the key and the league estimates they would need 15-thousand tests. Disney World in Orlando has emerged as a place where fan-less games can be held.

NASCAR will resume its season on May 17th at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina and there will be seven races in ten days between Darlington and the Charlotte Motor Speedway.

LSU football has received a verbal commitment from four-star outside linebacker and weakside-defensive end Zavier Carter from Atlanta, Georgia. He’s ranked as the 15th best outside linebacker in the nation.

Former Landry-Walker and Mississippi State quarterback Keytaon Thompson is transferring to Virginia. Thompson won Louisiana’s Mr. Football Award for the 2016 season after leading the Buccaneers to a Class 5A state title. When Dan Mullen left Mississippi State, Thompson’s playing time in Starkville was cut.

LSU men’s basketball coach Will Wade is not sure when the Tigers will get together as a team, but he believes once they start playing games, they’ll be a major contender on a national scale. Four players have entered their names in the NBA draft, Wade says he’s optimistic he’ll get at least a couple of those guys back, plus he just signed a recruiting class ranked fifth by 24-7 sports. Wade likes the two point guards he signed, Jalen Cook and Eric Gaines…

The state health department reported a big jump in coronavirus cases today as Louisiana reported 710 new positive cases. The state says the large jump is the result of a backlog of test results that have come in from two new labs who are now reporting their results electronically. It’s the first time the state recorded more than 700 positive tests since April 15th.

Oil City Republican Representative Danny McCormick is organizing an end the shutdown rally Saturday at noon in front of the governor’s mansion. Kevin Barnhart has the story.

The New Orleans Archdiocese has filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy as the institution is facing mounting legal costs caused by litigation stemming from decades-old incidents of clergy abuse. The governor’s new Stay at Home order begins today. It allows restaurants to have outdoor seating, with no table-side service. All employees of any business who deal with the public must wear a mask. Shopping malls can open for curbside delivery of goods.

LSU plans to begin a phase one re-opening on May 18th and the state legislature will re-start the legislative session on Monday.

Republican lawmakers are passing around a petition that seeks to revoke the state’s stay at home order so that the economy can begin to get back on its feet again. But Governor John Bel Edwards says overturning the order would be completely irresponsible and nonsensical…

Edwards says revoking the order could cause the state to lose millions of dollars in federal assistance.

There’s also been a push by Republican lawmakers to re-open the state on a parish-by-parish basis. West Feliciana Parish President Kenny Havard says he supports that approach because they’ve only had a few residents impacted by the virus…
