Preseason practice for LSU football was set to begin on Friday, but since the start of the regular season has been pushed back, the SEC announced today that the first allowable practice is now August 17th.

The Sun Belt Conference announced today its football season will begin over the Labor Day Weekend. The league says they will have an eight-game conference schedule and each school can play up to four non-conference games, beginning with week zero. The Sun Belt also plans on holding a championship game on December 5th.

LSU’s legendary gymnastics coach DD Breaux announced her retirement today after leading the program for 43 years. But the 67-year-old is not quitting the school as she’s been named an LSU ambassador, so she plans to be involved in a lot of different community service projects…

Breaux has built the LSU gymnastics program into a national power as they are three-time defending SEC champions and the Tigers have also finished as national runner-ups three times since 2016. Co-head coach Jay Clark will now run the program.

Five players scored in double figures led by Brandon Ingram who had 24 points and Zion Williamson scored 23 points in 25 minutes. The longest tenured coach of any sport in Southeastern Conference history, LSU’s D-D Breaux announced her retirement today after leading the Tigers gymnastics program for 43 years. Breaux is leaving on top as the Tigers are three-time defending SEC champions and fans have been packing the PMAC to watch their meets. Governor Edwards holds another coronavirus briefing at 2:30 today. The current phase two order ends Friday, but the governor is expected to extend it, despite a decline in the daily total of new cases and a slight drop in COVID-19 hospital patients.

Louisiana has released coronavirus safety guidelines so that motion picture production can resume. The regulations call for a COVID-19 compliance officer on set, testing of workers and everyone wearing masks except performers. Louisiana Entertainment Director Chris Stelly expects production to ramp up over the next two months…

Murder charges have been dropped for one of two teenagers arrested last week in Franklin Parish after a State Trooper found a dead body in the trunk of their vehicle. Authorities say 18-year-old Michael Mitchell has admitted to fatally shooting 23-year-old Michael Robinson Junior of Monroe and the passneger in the vehicle 19-year-old Cameron Powe had nothing to do with the crime. So Powe’s charges have been dropped.

Discussions continue in Washington D-C on extending expanded federal unemployment benefits. The 600-dollar per week pandemic jobless benefit expired last week. Senator John Kennedy says there’s been discussion on giving states a choice as to how to go about paying the benefits…

Congressional Democrats want to extend unemployment benefits through at least January 31st, while Kennedy says they should extend through the end of October.

The state has released a best practices plan so that film production can resume. Lousiana Entertainment Director Chris Stelly says there were 14 film productions in Louisiana when the pandemic hit, not all of them may return…

Three starters from last season’s LSU basketball team have withdrawn their names from the NBA underclassmen draft list. Forwards Trendon Watford and Darius Days and guard Javonte Smart are coming back for another season, giving Coach Will Wade a loaded roster. These three returning starters will join a recruiting class that’s rated as the sixth-best in the nation.

With U-L-M football looking for a couple of opponents to make for the loss of Georgia and Arkansas, could Louisiana Tech be a possibility? Warhawks athletics director Scott McDonald says he’s open to the discussion…

On Capitol Hill, lawmakers are making very little progress on passing another coronavirus relief bill that would extend jobless benefits. Democrats believe the country should continue with the 600-dollar-per-week jobless benefits, but Republicans are offering different alternatives. But Senator John Kennedy says Democrats are not willing to vote for other options…

Saints Quarterback Drew Brees says he will still stand for the National Anthem prior to football games this season, but he will respect the decision of his teammates who kneel after saying in June he would never approve of anyone who takes a knee during the anthem

Brees faced a mountain of criticism for his kneeling during the anthem comments in June. He quickly apologized and the 41-year-old says he now understands the anthem protests were not about disrespecting the flag.

The U-L Lafayette football program is broken hearted over the death of assistant offensive line coach D-J Looney. The former Mississippi State football player died from a heart attack following a team workout on Saturday at Cajun Field. Looney was just 31-years-old.

Federal judges in New Orleans and Lafayette have rejected requests from bar owners for a restraining order against the Governor’s bar closure order. Those owners are suing the state over the issue.

Loyola Law Professor Dane Ciolino says there’s a good legal reason why the requests were rejected.

The Governor’s order restricts bars from serving customers on-premise but does allow for customers to buy to-go drinks. To-go drinks have been banned in New Orleans.

The New Orleans case will be heard on the 14th and the Lafayette case will be heard on the 17th. Ciolino says this decision is a blow to those filing the suits.

Ochsner Health is one of 120 sites worldwide chosen to participate in phase 3 COVID-19 vaccine study with drugmaker Pfizer.  Ochsner Principal Investigator Dr. Julia Garcia-Diaz says the selection comes as a result of its expertise and history in conducting clinical trials.

All participants accepted into the study will be randomized to receive either the vaccine or a placebo in the form of two shots, with a 50/50 distribution between the two.  Neither the patients nor the investigators will know what they have received.

Garcia-Diaz says another factor that brought the study to Louisiana is its status as a COVID-19 hotspot.

Globally, the study aims to enroll up to 30,000 participants.  Ochsner will enroll a limited number of randomized participants selected from an existing pool of candidates who have previously expressed interest in COVID-19 research.

Garcia-Diaz says an exact timeline is unclear, but don’t expect the vaccine to be available anytime soon.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office found nearly 700 businesses were not in compliance with COVID spread mitigation measures in July.  Fire Marshal Butch Browning says that only accounts for a small share of the businesses they visited.

The most common shortcomings included face mask violations, table spacing, large gatherings, exceeded capacities, and self-serve buffet dining.

Browning says the 10 percent mark is indicative of how seriously businesses are taking spread mitigation efforts when compared to standard safety checks.

Browning says when they do find a violation, most of the businesses are willing to work with the state to correct it…

The Louisiana Department of Health has revoked the food permit for Firehouse BBQ in Livingston Parish as the Denham Springs restaurant reviews to enforce the state’s mask mandate. Firehouse BBQ posted on its Facebook page that remains open, despite the state’s effort to shut them down.

The state health department reports the number of coronavirus patients in Louisiana hospitals has fallen below 15-hundred for the first time since July 19th. The state also reported 17 more deaths and nearly 11-hundred more cases. The number of suspected active cases is 42-thousand.
