Woodworth Mayor David Butler says small towns like his are already on tight budgets with little room to cut. They’ve seen a 10-12 percent drop in sales tax revenue, and declining franchise fees.

LSU Coach Ed Orgeron disputes a quote attributed to him in a USA Today report about two women who claim former LSU running back Derius Guice raped them in 2016. In the USA Today story, a former player said that Orgeron told him that everybody’s girlfriend sleeps with other people. Orgeron released a statement on Twitter last night and said that the quote is not accurate. Coach O also says the sexual assault allegations against Guice should be taken seriously.

After watching the Big 10 and PAC 12 move football to the spring, LSU safety Jacoby Stevens is cherishing the opportunity to play. Stevens credits Shelly Mullenix, LSU’s Health and Wellness Coordinator for putting a plan in place so the Tigers can take the field next month…

In college football scheduling news, the Cajuns have added UAB and Central Arkansas to their schedule. They’ll visit the Blazers on Friday, October 23rd, and host the Bears on November 21st. ULM will kick off the season on September fifth at Troy, moving that game up from October 17th.

And the Pelicans will have the 13th pick in the NBA Draft, Minnesota won the lottery and has the top pick.

Governor Edwards says the latest metrics indicate the state is trending in the right direction in the fight against the spread of COVID-19. Kevin Barnhart has the story.

State officials are also watching the tropics and so should you as there are two tropical depressions that the National Hurricane Center expects will be hurricanes in the Gulf of Mexico next week. One of the potential storms could impact southwest Louisiana, the other southeast Louisiana on Wednesday.

Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin got very emotional as he discussed his fall election plan to a Senate Committee. Governor Edwards has called the proposal woefully inadequate as he says it does not allow people who are ordered to quarantine to mail-in their ballot and the governor says it also forces people who are susceptible to the virus to vote in person. But Ardoin believes his plan has the best chance to be implemented….

Under Ardoin’s plan, the only COVID-related reason for a mail in ballot is if a voter tests positive during early voting or in the days before the election.

As the deadline to complete the 2020 Census looms, the Bayou State is falling short in responses, which could put the state in danger of losing federal funding. U-S Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross says the national response rate to the Census is 64-percent and Louisiana is at 58-percent.

American Airlines is suspending flights out of Lake Charles from October 7th through November 3rd.

American says it the first step in an evaluation of their network, but Lake Charles Regional Airport Director Heath Allen says it’s surprising considering how strongly they’ve bounced back.

American has also canceled flights to 14 other smaller US cities through the same period.

Allen says their data indicates they had been filling American flights out of Lake Charles at 70 percent, which is a healthy number right now.

American received ten billion dollars in federal stimulus funds on the condition that flights and their workforce were maintained. That requirement ends September 30th. American reported losses of more than two billion in the last quarter.

Allen says thankfully they still have United providing flights to Dallas, but the loss of access to the American network will be difficult to recover from.

Eight SEC teams have announced their plans for fans at football games this season, with all of them having capacities somewhere between 20 and 25 percent. Governor Edwards expects we will know the situation at Tiger Stadium in the next ten days…

LSU opens the season in Baton Rouge on September 26th against Mississippi State.

Edwards says the capacity limits won’t just be based on how safely you can space people out in the stadium, but how safely you can move people around the stadium.

Edwards says he is also waiting on plans from ULM, UL Lafayette, and La Tech as well as LSU. He’s confident their proposals will be adequate.

All eyes are on the tropics as two tropical depressions are expected to form into named storms today.  State Climatologist Barry Keim says the closest system to Louisiana is tropical depression 14 and is currently getting organized in the Western Caribbean.

The storm is expected to peak at tropical storm strength.

Keim says the tropical depression 13 is also gaining steam but is about 750 miles east of the northern Leeward Islands in the Atlantic.

Keim says both storms are likely to impact the US and Louisiana could be a landing spot for either or both.

A tropical wave coming off of Africa is a third area of concern.

The Louisiana Treasury Department announces they returned a record 63-million dollars in unclaimed property for the fiscal year that ended June 30th. State Treasurer John Schroder says the previous record was 52-million dollars, which was set during the previous fiscal year

Each year millions of dollars in unclaimed cash, such as payroll checks, royalties, and life insurance proceeds are turned over to the State Treasurer’s Office. Schroder says this past year his office returned more than two million dollars to a family in New Orleans and he has another great example

As long as COVID-19 doesn’t get in the way, Myles Brennan will finally get his chance to be LSU’s starting quarterback. Brennan arrived at LSU in 2017 and has watched Joe Burrow take snaps the last two seasons. LSU interim president Thomas Galligan told WAFB-TV in Baton Rouge today that the university is looking into the allegations that former running back Derrius Guice raped two female students in 2016. Galligan says they take every allegation of sexual misconduct very seriously. Guice’s lawyer has said the accusations are not true.

LSU’s first-year starting quarterback Myles Brennan says he has no problems handling a leadership role and says he’s been a leader, even though he’s watched from the sidelines during most of his collegiate career…

Governor John Bel Edwards says they have started the process of deliverying fast-acting testing equipment to facilities that could result in-person visitation again soon…

A new report estimates about a quarter of Louisiana students do not have access to the internet to participate in virtual classes. Franklinton Senator Beth Mizell says the findings are deeply concerning, adding that in her district, it’s about 46% who are without internet.

Tropical Depression 13 could become Tropical Storm Laura later today as it moves towards the Leeward Islands. The National Hurricane Center expects the system to move towards the southeastern Gulf of Mexico. We are also watching an area of low pressure in the central Caribbean.

A new report estimates that one in four Louisiana students lack the internet access needed to conduct online learning. Franklinton Senator Beth Mizell is an advocate to expand high-speed internet access and says school districts have supplied some students with Wi-Fi hot spots, which has put the state in a better position since the pandemic began…

NFL Vice President of football operations Troy Vincent said the league may create a bubble for its teams that make the postseason. It’s an idea Saints Coach Sean Payton suggested to the competition committee. A bubble scenario would need approval from the players union.

Two former LSU students have told the USA Today that former running back Derius Guice raped them when he was a freshman in 2016. One of the women, a former tennis player, says she reported the allegation to LSU’s Title nine office but received no response. LSU has released a statement saying the school takes all accusations of sexual assault seriously and formal complaints are promptly and fully investigated.
