The state health department reports vaccines have been administered to 22-thousand health care workers. The state plans to update that number twice a week on it’s coronavirus dashboard found on the department of health’s website. The governor is holding a COVID-19 briefing at this hour.

Bo Pelini is out after just one season as LSU’s defensive coordinator after the Tigers defense had a historically bad season. Tiger Rag Editor Ron Higgins says Pelini also left LSU after 2007, but that was after winning a national title…

The Louisiana Workforce Commission says the state last month had 90-thousand fewer jobs than the previous November. The New Orleans metro area is responsible for about half of that number. L-W-C Secretary Ava Dejoie says the city’s job losses are historic…

Governor John Bel Edwards will provide a COVID-19 update today and with the current modified Phase 2 order set to expire Wednesday, the governor is expected to announce what restrictions will be in place for the next month. With the state still reporting a significant number of cases, Edwards has said he does not expect a loosening of restrictions.

A new, more infectious strain of coronavirus is spreading in England. Matt Doyle spoke with an LSU Health New Orleans professor about the concerning news…

A Legislative Auditor’s report raises concerns that COVID test results are not getting reported to the state Health Department fast enough for effective contact tracing. Data Analytics Manager Chris Magee says laboratories are not reporting all results to LDH within the legally mandated 24 hour time period…

A Legislative Auditor’s report raises concerns that lab delays in reporting COVID test results are hampering the state’s contact tracing program. Matt Doyle has the story.

The Louisiana Supreme Court has sent a legal dispute between Governor John Bel Edwards and the Louisiana House of Representatives over COVID restrictions back to district court. The state’s highest court says Judge William Morvant should have had a full hearing before ruling on the constitutionality of a House petition that seeks to cancel the governor’s mask mandate, business restrictions, and limits on crowd size.

The 900-billion dollar pandemic relief bill approved by Congress last night contains money for struggling businesses, including restaurants. Louisiana Restaurant Association President Stan Harris says the bill gives a second round of the Paycheck Protection Program for restaurants that include loan forgiveness and 24-weeks to spend the capital.

The legislation also includes increased unemployment benefits and a 600-dollar stimulus check for most people.

A new audit from the Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s Office has found the state health department’s Coronavirus dashboard is not overreporting cases or deaths, but many labs are not reporting their data on a timely basis. Flights from London are still landing in the United States even though health officials in the U-K has found a new strain of the coronavirus that is 70-percent more infectious. LSU Health New Orleans School of Medicine Professor Doctor Fred Lopez says there’s a good chance this strain makes its way into the United States…

While reports indicate it is at least 70 percent more infectious, it does not appear to be any more deadly.

The latest COVID relief bill from Congress adds extra provisions to assist a struggling restaurant industry. Brooke Thorington has more.

This latest federal stimulus package is also expected to provide Louisiana colleges and public schools with more federal aid. According to the Advocate, the state could be in line for one-point-six billion dollars, with one-point-one billion dollars for public schools and 385-million dollars for higher education.

After a historically bad season for LSU’s defense, Bo Pelini is out as LSU’s defensive coordinator. Pelini still had two years left on his contract and based on his contract, he’ll get five-point-two million dollars to not coach at LSU. Other members of LSU’s coaching staff are also reportedly out, Bill Busch, Bill Johnson and Scott Linehan.

Cajuns Coach Billy Napier has reportedly received interest from Auburn, but the school says Napier is committed to being the coach at U-L Lafayette.

Tulane will face a 6-and-2 Nevada Wolfpack team today in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl at 2:30 PM in Boise. The Wolfpack finished third in the Mountain West Conference after starting the season 5-0. They rank second in the Mountain West in passing and Green Wave Coach Willie Fritz says Nevada will challenge their defense…

Tuesday is usually an off day for the Saints, but with New Orleans hosting Minnesota on Friday, the team will spend today getting ready for the Vikings. Second Harvest Food Bank Spokesperson Natasha Curley says they will give away food at the Lake Charles Civic Center from 10 until noon.

Brees and the Saints will host Minnesota on Christmas. The Vikings lost to the Bears yesterday and must win to keep their slim playoff hopes alive.

For the second time this month Ragin Cajuns Coach Billy Napier released a statement saying he’s staying at U-L Lafayette. Napier’s name has come up in the search for a new Auburn coach.

Clemson and Notre Dame will face off in the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans on New Year’s Day night. The other semifinal college football playoff matchup is Alabama against Notre Dame. That will be the Rose Bowl but it will be played in Arlington, Texas.

The Independence Bowl will not be held this Saturday as the Shreveport-based bowl could not find an opponent for Army who accepted a bid in October. The Black Knights were supposed to play a team from the Pac-12, but several of their schools opted out of the postseason and Indy Bowl spokesperson Erik Evenson they couldn’t find a school from another conference…

For the first time in 44 years, the Independence Bowl will not be played in Shreveport on Saturday. The I-Bowl could not find an opponent for Army who accepted a bid to play in the bowl game. I-Bowl spokesperson Erik Evenson says it’s crushing that this annual holiday tradition can not happen this year

The Louisiana Department of Education plans to use eight million dollars provided by the state legislature to purchase new computers for public school students. Superintendent Cade Brumley on how the funding originated.

The department just received news of the funding and Brumely says they are working on a plan to purchase and distribute 23,000 Chromebooks to school systems by next Spring.

Brumley says students and educators have made incredible pivots throughout the pandemic and while virtual learning has certainly come a long way since March, they still have several hurdles to overcome.

Brumley says the Chromebooks have touchscreen technology which makes them more accessible for a wider range of students and easier use for younger students.

Louisiana will receive nearly 80,000 doses of the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine over the next three days. About 36,000 of those will head to nursing homes and the remaining 44,000 will be sent to tier two hospitals and medical first responders. Assistant State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter celebrates the news…

Last week the state received about 40,000 doses of Pfizer’s vaccine and is expecting just under 30,000 this week. Those are reserved for frontline healthcare workers.

Moderna will now be in circulation with the Pfizer vaccine. Kanter says right now you won’t really have a choice which one you get to take but the truth is they’re both just as effective and safe…

Both vaccines have 94 to 95 percent rates of effectiveness. The Moderna vaccine requires a booster shot 28 days later versus Pfizer, which requires a booster 21 days later.

Kanter says the difference between the two is that the Moderna vaccine is easier to transport than its Pfizer cousin because it doesn’t have to be kept nearly as cold.

Vaccinations of nursing home residents are expected to begin sometime next week.

After sunset tonight you’ll definitely want to take a look at the western skies and view a phenomenon dubbed the Christmas Star.  LSU Professor of Astronomy Dr. Tabetha Boyajian (boy-ah-gin) says it’s not actually a star but planets Jupiter and Saturn aligning closer together, they will appear within a tenth of a degree from each other.

The best viewing of the so-called Christmas Star is tonight after dusk, but it will be visible until the 25th. Dr. Boyajian explains the Christmas connection.

Dr. Boyajian says you won’t need a telescope to view the once in a lifetime event and try to find a location without tall trees, buildings, and bright lights for best viewing.

The Saints were without star wide receiver Michael Thomas. He’s been placed on I-R for the rest of the regular season in the hopes that his ailing right ankle is healthy for the playoffs.

The LSU Tigers avoided a losing season by outscoring Ole Miss 53-48 on a wet afternoon in Tiger Stadium on Saturday. Coach Ed Orgeron is glad they finished a difficult season with two victories

Freshman Pollock Representative Gabe Firment says there’s “disturbing” evidence home insurance companies are shortchanging customers with hurricane damage on their settlement offers. Firment says it starts by replacing traditional adjusters with technology.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission says the state added 18,500 seasonally adjusted nonfarm jobs from October to November as the unemployment rate dropped by one-point-one percent. But as of last month, the state still had 90-thousand fewer jobs as of November 2019.
