The state health department is holding mass vaccination events with the one-dose Johnson and Johnson vaccine. The clinics begin today at the Ernest Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, the Shrine on Airline in Metairie, the Lake Charles Civic Center and the St. Tammany Physicians Network in Madisonville. Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin has ended the search for new voting machines amidst complaints about the bid process from fellow Republican lawmakers. Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt sent Ardoin a letter asking him to restart the procurement process for new machines with more legislative, public, and expert input on best practices for purchasing voting machines.

The mother has been identified as 38-year-old Shawntel Heck. Travis says the children were unharmed.

State Police is investigating a fatal police shooting that occurred in Abbeville yesterday afternoon. The episode began when a Vermilion Parish Sheriff’s deputy attempted to serve a protective order, when a suspect began shooting at officers. State Police say a deputy was shot and the suspect was fatally shot while aiming a rife at law enforcement. The wounded deputy has reportedly been released from the hospital.

Redistricting of Louisana’s Congressional districts may have to wait until next year. Brooke Thorington explains.

LSU baseball won a pair of games yesterday over two different opponents. The Tigers defeated Nicholls five to four in the first contest and they clobbered Southern 16 to one in the second game. Dylan Crews hit home runs in both games and Will Hellmers threw five shutout innings against the Jaguars.

In other action, McNeese edged U-L Lafayette four to three to drop the Cajuns record to seven and three. Cowboys Coach Justin Hill missed the game after testing positive for COVID-19.

ULM clobbered Grambling nine to one. Trace Henry and Wiley Cleland each drove in three runs. Southeastern Louisiana freshman Will Kinzeler struck out a career-high 13 as the Lions defeated Tulane six to one.

College basketball…Louisiana Tech tuned up for the conference USA Tournament by beating Our Lady of the Lake 99-66. UNO knocked off Northwestern State 92-83 and Southeastern Louisiana had a disappointing loss to Central Arkansas 88-71.

The Pelicans followed up their best win of the season by losing to Chicago last night for a second time this season as the Bulls held off New Orleans 128 to 124. Zion Williamson had 28 points but he was eight of 16 from the free-throw line…

The Saints have terminated the contracts of veteran tight ends Jared Cook and Josh Hill. Cook was set to become a free agent, while Hill had one more year left on his deal. By releasing Hill, the Saints save three-million dollars against the cap. The team has also reportedly restructured the contract of defensive tackle David Onyemata that will reportedly save the team four million dollars against the 2021 salary cap.

Two young boys from Ponchatoula have been found safe in Santa Rosa County, Florida after they were reported missing. Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff Chief Deputy James Travis says the eight and four-year-old were located yesterday afternoon after an investigation determined it was their mother, 38-year-old Shawntel Heck, was the one who took the boys after their father left them briefly in his car.

Redistricting was expected to be done this year, but House Governmental Affairs Chairman John Stefanski says the state will wait until next year to redraw political boundaries because the 2020 Census numbers will not come in until the fall…

Tonight at the Smoothie King Center, the Pelicans will host the Bulls. Nearly a month ago, Chicago beat New Orleans 129-116 and Bulls All Star Zach LaVine had 46 points. He’s been averaging nearly 29 points a game.

The Saints have reportedly restructured defensive tackle David Onyemata’s contract, which will create four-point-three million dollars in cap space. Onyemata signed a three-year, 26 million dollar deal prior to the 2020 season.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says the Saints have also discussed with teams the possibility of trading defensive tackle Malcolm Brown, who is entering the final year of three-year, 15-million dollar contract. Rapoport says the Saints would ave five million dollars against the cap if they either traded or released Brown.

With Louisiana moving into phase 3, sporting events can now increase fan capacity to 50 percent. LSU says they plan to do so, once the state fire marshal’s office approves their plans.

The LSU men’s basketball team easily defeated Vanderbilt last night 83-68 at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center. The Tigers improved to 10-6 in the SEC and they clinched a double-bye in the SEC Tournament. Coach Will Wade has already led LSU to an SEC regular-season championship, he would also like an SEC Tournament title too…

Louisiana is dead last in the 2021 Childhood Report that ranks how well states provide for and protect children during the pandemic. Senator Bill Cassidy says he hasn’t read the report in full but believes it’s weighted towards the lack of internet access for many children and…

The report examines child poverty, child deaths, hunger, dropout rates, and teen pregnancy.

Cassidy says while Louisiana does have a high rate of in-person learning that includes hybrid models where students are in the classroom two days a week and virtual the other three.

Cassidy says there’s been federal funding dedicated to helping schools during the pandemic and only half has been spent.

Louisiana moved into Phase Three COVID restrictions today but health officials warn that doesn’t mean the pandemic is over.

Our neighbors in Mississippi and Texas dropped their mask mandates but State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter says we won’t be doing the same.

Under Phase Three most businesses can move to 75 percent capacity in Louisiana but social distancing and mask-wearing are still mandatory.

Despite that progress, the state has still never dropped below 500 COVID-related hospitalizations. As of Wednesday 588 patients remain hospitalized.

Kanter says the plan moving forward is to ramp up the vaccination campaign fast enough to offset the rapidly growing number of variant cases.

The UK variant, which is more contagious and believed to be more deadly, is expected to be the dominant strain in Louisiana sometime this month.

It’s been one year since the Southwest Louisiana Veterans Cemetery was dedicated in Jennings. 84 veterans and their loved ones have been buried there and cemetery director Dwayne Guidry says they have 17-hundred burial spots available across ten acres

Since the pandemic began there’s been vast amounts of misinformation and medical theories about what can cure or curtail COVID-19. Some have tried a drug used on horses called ivermectin (ai-ver-mek-tn,) Director of Louisiana Poison Control center Dr. Mark Ryan says based on the few studies done, it’s not proven to treat COVID.

Even though the ivermectin is most often prescribed for horses, the antiparasitic is also used in humans, but Ryan says taking the drug without oversight from a physician could be dangerous.

Ryan says ivermectin was at one time used in hospitals to treat patients when nothing else proved to be effective, but as physicians have found more useful drug therapies the medication has been removed as an option.

Ryan says never try to treat yourself, especially with nonproven drug therapy, without the oversight of your physician.

An Amber Alert remains active for a missing eight-year-old and four-year-old from Ponchatoula. The Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s office says Kaesyn Heck and Jax Matthews were inside their father’s vehicle when it was stolen from his home. The vehicle is a maroon 2013 Hyundai Elantra with a busted sunroof.

The state health department reported 582 new cases of COVID-19 today and 21 more deaths. The number of COVID patients in the hospital fell by 41 to 588.
