Louisiana made significant progress on the Nation’s Report Card with 4th graders leading the nation in reading improvement moving all the way from 42nd to 16th place in the last two years. . Leaders for a Better Louisiana Chief Policy Officer Barry Erwin says Louisiana been placing more focus on early intervention.

Erwin says improvement started in 2021 and because Louisiana students were back in the classroom faster than other states following the pandemic, it played a factor in the improvement of reading.

Big leap for Louisiana as scores for 4th grade reading  have jumped from 46th to 16th in 4th in just two years. Sean Richardson has dertails.

City leaders in New Orleans have signed off on plans to build a new city-run shelter for 65 people living on the street. The move marks a change in plans from earlier efforts to move homeless people from encampments to permanent housing.  The apartment-style shelter, would be built on a vacant lot between South Gayoso and South Dupre streets.

A new statewide survey reveals some alarming mental health issues in Louisiana.  Executive Director of Tulane’s Newcomb Institute Anita Raj says more than one in ten men in Louisiana have thought about suicide in the past year.

Governor Landry is outlining some of the security procedures which will be in place next week for the Super Bowl. From February 5th through the 10th, there will be an enhanced French Quarter Security Zone where no ice chests will be allowed, all bags larger than 4 ½ by 6 ½ will be searched, and no vehicles will be allowed.

A 30-year Marine Corps veteran got the surprise of a lifetime – he was told by Jayden Daniels that he was selected by USAA to go to the Super Bowl.  He is Jonathan Knauth (kuh-NOWTH) of Stafford County, Virginia who’s first time in New Orleans was just in response to Hurricane Katrina.

This time Knauth will be enjoying  the Super Bowl from a luxury suite.

Speaking on the Senate floor, Senator John Kennedy warned that failing to extend the 2017 tax cuts would severely damage the economy.  He’s also arguing to increase defense funding due to threats from China, Russia, and Iran, stressing that weakness invites aggression.

In Caddo Parish, a Sheriff’s Deputy has been arrested, charged with battery against a dating partner.  Sherriff Henry Whitehorn, Senior said 61 year old Earl Armstrong was taken into custody after Armstrong’s girlfriend provided video evidence of the incident.  He was booked into the Caddo Correctional Center.

North and central Louisiana are getting an additional area code in the 318 area code territory.   Louisiana Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell says the new 457 area code will be for new numbers because 318 simply ran out of numbers.

Starting on February 24th, AT&T and other carriers would like phone users to use all ten numbers to make a call within the 318 area code territory, because after August 25th the call will not go through if you dial a number using just seven digits.

A cat near New Orleans is confirmed to have been infected with bird flu. Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain says a domestic breed feral cat was picked up in Plaquemines Parish for neutering.

Jayden Daniels’ magical rookie season with the Washington Commanders has come to an end after yesterday’s 55-23 loss to the Eagles.   Daniels had one interception, and the Commanders also lost three fumbles. Daniels says it’s a tough way to end the season.
