After a 15-year pause, executions in Louisiana are scheduled to start up again next month. Among the first slated to be executed is Jessie Hoffman, who raped and killed Molly Elliott execution-style in 1996. Collin Sims, the district attorney for Washington and St. Tammany parishes, requested the death warrant.

Sims says seeking the death penalty and carrying one out are not moves to be taken lightly.

During Carnival season, while parade-goers collect festive beads, impaired drivers will receive handcuffs as part of Louisiana’s Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign. Louisiana Highway Safety Commission spokesman Greg Fischer says police will be out in force.

A woman reported missing in St. Landry Parish is found dead, and her boyfriend is accused of killing her. A ping of Jorlany Benitez’s phone led investigators to a remote area along Highway 10, where they found her burned vehicle. Sheriff Bobby Guidroz says a deputy found a man walking in that area.

Sheriff Guidroz says 24-year-old Irving Cisneros Arguelles of Lawtell eventually admitted to killing her, and deputies arrested him.

Southeastern Louisiana University has achieved its highest overall spring enrollment in 100 years. The university is reporting a seven-percent increase, pushing total overall enrollment to nearly 15-thousand students.  University President Dr. William Wainwright says preparatory enrollment, students earning college credit while in high school, grew by nearly 19-percent.

The Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries is asking anglers for help in keeping Louisiana waters free of non-native invasive fish because fish like the Northern Snakehead which resembles Louisiana Bowfin over compete and prey on the native fish potentially devasting both recreational and commercial fisheries. LDWF if you catch a Northern Snakehead, do not release it. They ask you to kill the fish but first take a side view photo and report its location to the Aquatic Invasive Species Hotline at 225-765-3977.

A Winter Weather advisory goes into effect in North Louisiana at six tonight. National Weather Service Meteorologist Matt Hemingway says travel could become treacherous deeper into the night because of the possibility of winter precipitation.

Pursuit of a stolen UPS truck ends with a crash in Shreveport Tuesday morning. Shreveport police say Skyler Jarvis stole the truck that was loaded with firearms and controlled substances. During the pursuit, police say Jarvis struck two police units in what Chief Wayne Smith called an extremely dangerous and reckless incident. After the crash Jarvis was arrested with the help of K-9 officer Edy and he’s been charged with Attempted First-Degree Murder, Aggravated Flight, and Auto theft.

A breakfast table argument turns deadly in LaPlace. 24-year-old Tamyrihu (tam-uh-REE-hoo) Hubbard of Marrero is charged with second degree murder in the shooting death of her boyfriend, 23-year-old Joshua Jones.

St. John Parish Sheriff Mike Trege says the couple has a history of problems. Hubbard’s bond is set at one-million dollars.

Two Colorado men were arrested for attempting to smuggle tens of thousands of dollars worth of tobacco and methamphetamine into a federal prison using a compressed air cannon. Grant Parish Sheriff Steven McCain says they were not successful.

18-year-old Jose Munoz, and 19-year-old Angel Gutierrez were arrested. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement assisted in the investigation and has placed a detainer on Munoz, as he is in the country illegally.

In response to the loss of 300 permanent jobs when International Paper shuts down their containerboard plant in Campti, The Louisiana Workforce Commission’s Rapid Response Team is setting up Mobile Workforce Centers this Thursday and Friday to provide resources to help the displaced workers. The Team will set up in two locations from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm Thursday and Friday: in Natchitoches at 716 Second Street and in Campti at 201 Edenborn Street. They will assist with training grants, resume writing, career counseling, application submission, and work registration. Information is available online at laworks.net.

One month from today Louisiana is set to complete the first death row execution in 15 years and the first by nitrogen gas.  Jacquelyn Stern with the Jewish Federation of New Orleans was among Jewish leaders in front of Touro Synagogue today. She says while opinions of capital punishment vary among those gathered, they’re all united in the stance that lethal gas should not be used as a method anywhere in the United States.

The grandparents of one of the victims killed in the Bourbon Street terror attack were killed over the weekend by an alleged drunk driver. Gretna Deputy Police Chief Jason DiMarco says  33-year-old Stephan Juarez hit Hubert and Victoria Gauthreaux as they were trying to leave their parked vehicle. He says Juarez is facing a slew of charges, all of which when combined could land him in prison for the rest of his life.

The grandparents of one of the victims of the terror attack on Bourbon Street were killed by an alleged drunk driver over the weekend. Hubert and Victoria Gauthreaux (GO-trow) were the grandparents of 21-year-old Hubert Gauthreaux the Third, Gretna Deputy Police Chief Jason DiMarco says 33-year-old Stephan Juarez hit the couple as they were trying to leave their parked vehicle. Investigators are working to determine exactly how fast Juarez was going.
