Former Louisiana First Lady Alice Foster passed away at her St. Mary Parish home last Thursday. She was the wife of the late former Governor Murphy “Mike” Foster. His Former Press Secretary, Marsanne Golsby says During Mrs. Foster’s tenure she championed many causes, including The Governor’s Mansion Foundation, Keep Louisiana Beautiful and Breast Cancer Awareness.

A legendary Louisiana high school football coach has passed away. Alton “Red” Franklin passed away over the weekend at the age of 89. The former Haynesville High School Head Football Coach won 11 state championships during his 35 years there. Franklin’s son, David – the current head coach for the Golden Tornadoes – says his father was a mentor in both football and life.

Be on the lookout for a work release inmate on the loose. 22-year-old Taegan Howarth walked off the job Friday evening. Ashley Rodrigue with the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office says Howarth was working for a company in St. James Parish.

Be on the lookout for a work release inmate who walked off his job in Convent Friday. Ashley Rodrigue with the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office says 22-year-old Taegan Howarth was working for a company in St. James Parish. She says the program is a Department of Corrections program, and Howarth is not the first they’ve had to recapture since Gerald Sticker became sheriff last year.

Many are feeling the effects of springing forward for Daylight saving time LSU Health New Orleans Dr. Rahn Bailey emphasizes the importance of routine for regulation of the sleep neurotransmitter, melatonin, and for cognitive function, and mental well-being. He says the time change can throw that off for days.

A Tangipahoa Parish inmate walked off his work release job in St. James Parish Friday and has yet to be located. Ashley Rodrigue with the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office says 22-year-old Taegan Howarth is serving time in Tangipahoa Parish for battery, along with drug and weapons charges. He was last seen in Convent wearing a yellow vest and a white hard hat. Rodrigue is urging you to be on the lookout for him.

Daylight saving time is again sparking debate on its effects and whether it should be abolished. While opinions vary, experts agree that clock changes impact health, particularly by disrupting sleep. LSU Health New Orleans Dr. Rahn Bailey says losing an hour during the “spring forward” transition affects biological clocks, reducing morning sunlight exposure and delaying sleep schedules.

A legendary North Louisiana high school football coach has passed away. Alton Franklin, affectionately known as “Red,” passed away over the weekend at the age of 89. Franklin was the head football coach at Haynesville High School for 35 years, winning 11 state championships along the way. Franklin’s son, David – the current head coach for the Haynesville Golden Tornadoes – says his father was more than a coach of his players.

Baton Rouge Police say the death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson was caused by repeated punches to his chest while he was pledging Omega Psi Phi fraternity. Chief Thomas Morse says Caleb McCray who turned himself in is charged with criminal hazing and manslaughter. More arrests are expected. Southern University President Dennis Shields says the Baton Rouge campus chapter of Omega Psi Phi is ordered to cease all activities, and other fraternities on campus are also affected.

Crawfish harvesters are working diligently to prevent thieves from making off with their hauls. Paul Zaunbrecher, a crawfish farmer in Acadia Parish, says the best way to stop crawfish theft is not to leave their sacks unattended.

A Doyline couple was arrested for aggravated animal cruelty after authorities say they abandoned 12 dogs on a rural road. Sheriff Jason Parker says Alan and Kimberly Crowley were arrested at their mobile home, where authorities found approximately 60 more dogs living in inhumane conditions.

The abandoned dogs were captured and taken to a veterinarian before being placed with a rescue group.

LSU football has hired a familiar name to be their new defensive line coach. One suspect in the hazing-related death of a Southern University student has turned himself in, and others are expected to follow suit. 23-year-old Caleb McCray is charged with manslaughter and felony hazing. Andrew Greenstein has more.

Baton Rouge Police gave an update on the death of Southern University student Caleb Wilson. Chief Thomas Morse says the 20-year-old student and Human Jukebox member died after being repeatedly punched in the chest while pledging to the Omega Psi Phi fraternity, and one suspect is under arrest.

Paul Zaunbrecher, a crawfish farmer in Acadia Parish, says some sophisticated crawfish thieves will steal the crawfish from the traps during overnight hours. Zaunbrecher says drastic situations call for drastic measures.

A hearing is being held in federal court in Baton Rouge Friday aimed at halting the execution of Jessie Hoffman. The Promise of Justice Initiative says using the nitrogen hypoxia method to execute inmates amounts to cruel and unusual punishment. Loyola University New Orleans Law Professor Dane Ciolino says with Hoffman’s execution slated for March 18th, he expects Chief Judge Shelly Dick to issue a ruling very quickly, which will undoubtedly be appealed to the fifth Circuit Court of Appeals.

A man whose remains were discovered back in 1984 is still unidentified, and the coroner in St. Tammany Parish needs your help. Hunters found the remains below the I-59 bridge on the bank of the West Pearl River near the Mississippi State Line. Coroner Dr. Christopher Tape says exactly when the man died is unclear.

Venture Global has announced it will invest an additional 18 billion dollars to expand its liquefied natural gas facility south of New Orleans in Plaquemines Parish. Venture CEO Mike Sabel says the LNG export facility will increase annual shipments from 27 million tons to over 45 million

Clocks spring forward an hour this weekend and it’s a great time to check smoke alarms too, that’s according to State Fire Marshal spokesperson Ken Pastorick who says smoke alarms are proven to save lives and that’s what happened last Saturday in Hammond.

Spokesperson Ken Pastorick says smoke alarms are proven to save lives and suggests testing your smoke alarm monthly if you can’t afford one, Operation Save-a-Life can help.

The identity of a man whose remains were discovered in 1984 is still unknown. St. Tammany Parish Coroner Christopher Tape says Hunters found the skeletal remains near the Mississippi State Line but the circumstances surrounding the man’s demise are unclear. At the time of his death, he could have been between 18 and 40 years old and his death could have occurred anytime between the late 1960’s to the early 80’s

There was no evidence of injuries before death. There was a pocket watch and a bell with the body, and the skull had an extra tooth.

Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser looked back at this Carnival in New Orleans and said it was good to see the severe weather on Tuesday did not damper the spirits though some parades times and routes were altered.

When clocks change to Daylight Saving Time this weekend, it’s a good time to change the batteries in your smoke alarm and the State Fire Marshal’s office wants to remind Louisianans that smoke alarms save lives. Spokesperson Ken Pastorick says last year 73 people died in residential fires in Louisiana, and only three cases had working smoke alarms.

Every year more out-of-state visitors are going to cities outside of New Orleans to experience Mardi Gras, says Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser. Unfortunately, this Carnival season there were violent incidents in Franklinton and Mamou but in New Orleans Nungesser says there were a few incidents in the city but fortunately no major incidents along the parade routes.

Louisiana’s small business owners are urging legislators to address rising insurance costs through legal reforms in the legislative session that starts next month. According to NFIB State Director Long, lawsuit abuse is a major factor driving up insurance rates, and common-sense reforms are necessary to stabilize the market and create a fair legal system.

At least two people are reportedly dead and many more were injured from gunfire during a Mardi Gras celebration in the Evangeline Parish town of Mamou. Shots were fired when musician Chris Ardoin was performing at the Mamou Mardi Gras Zydeco concert. Ardoin went on Facebook to say he’s done performing outdoor shows…

In Washington Parish, five people were injured during the Pepe Mardi Gras parade in Franklinton Sunday leading some to question the future of the parade and that has prompted Keneshia Neal to start a petition to preserve the event. She says the actions of a few should not overshadow a tradition that has united the community for over 50 years. She adds, canceling the parade would not address the root causes of violence but would deprive residents of a cultural cornerstone. The petition can be found at change dot org slash Franklinton.

With the help of a former Dateline NBC correspondent, the Livingston Parish Sheriff’s Office busts several men in an online solicitation sting. Andrew Greenstein reports.
