Fifty-five Republicans voted against Jim Jordan in a ballot on Friday after the party’s first nominee, House Republican Steve Scalise was forced to withdraw due to opposition from Jordan supporters. Baton Rouge Congressman, Garret Graves says the focus should be selecting a Speaker so the House can conduct business.

Republican Governor-elect Jeff Landry garnered more than fifty percent of the vote and avoided a runoff in a primary that had a turnout of only thirty-six percent. Landry thanked his supporters in Broussard Saturday night and said his victory is historic and symbolic.

Landry received 52-percent of the vote, Democrat Shawn Wilson 26-percent, and everyone else was in single digits. Cross says none of the other candidates made a persuasive case…

By winning the election now, it gives Landry an extra month to prepare to take over as Louisiana’s 57th governor.

Republican Jeff Landry winning the governor’s race in the primary was a surprise to political watchers. JMC Analytics Pollster John Couvillon says Landry receiving 12-percent of the Black vote was a big key in Saturday’s victory. He says that’s unprecedented for a white candidate in a statewide race to receive that much support from Black voters…

The U.S. House is expected to try again tomorrow and elect a new Speaker of the House. Baton Rouge Congressman Garret Graves says Ohio Representative Jim Jordan is the top candidate and it’s not a given that he’ll get the 217 votes to replace Kevin McCarthy.

The only female on Louisiana’s death row has been denied a capital clemency hearing by the state pardon board. Antoinette Frank was a New Orleans police officer when she killed fellow officer Ronald Williams, and two restaurant workers during a late night robbery in 1995. Officer Williams’s brother-in-law pleaded with the Louisiana Pardon Board not to grant clemency, saying his family has suffered enough.

A Friday night crash has left a man dead and a 9 year old girl injured after a car crashed into her bedroom. It happened last night just before 11. West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s officials say 43 year old Dedrick Manchester of New Roads was killed when he veered off the road, hit a gas main and crashed into the girl’s home. Officials say they the girl suffered moderate injuries and was taken to the hospital for treatment.

LSU Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy Natalie Hinkel says this type of eclipse happens when the moon is further from Earth, and it obscures only part of the sun. She says Louisiana will only have a partial eclipse and won’t get the full effect of the Ring of Fire view. (:18)

Natchitoches Police are still investigating the death of a Northwestern State Football Player. 21 year old Ronald Caldwell from Manor, Texas died early Thursday morning after being shot several times. No one has been charged in his death. But Natchitoches Police have arrested Caldwell’s roommate 27 year old John McIntosh, who’s charged with possession of a firearm in the presence of a controlled dangerous substance.

Louisiana Congressman and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise’s attempt to be the next U-S House Speaker is over. Scalise could only afford to lose four votes from Republicans and there were at least 17 GOP lawmakers against him, despite receiving the House Republican nomination on Wednesday. Scalise says unification is needed and the House has to come together for the country.

A plane crash in Patterson claimed 2 lives yesterday, St. Mary Parish coroner, Eric Melancon confirmed this morning. NTSB is expected to begin investigating the crash of a Cessna 414 that occurred around 3 PM Thursday. The plane crashed in a field in the vicinity of the Patterson Airport and sparks from the crash caused a wildfire in the field adjacent to the airport. Several fire departments from surrounding towns responded. The names of the victims have not be released.

Louisiana’s Steve Scalise had the public support of Louisiana U-S Representatives Julia Letlow and Clay Higgins in his bid for Speaker of the House. Higgins says he’s sad Scalise wouldn’t be the first House Speaker from Louisiana. But He now throws his support behind fellow House Freedom Caucus member Jim Jordan from Ohio…

Northwestern State in Natchitoches is mourning the tragic death of a respected football player. Natchitoches Police Corporal John Greely says, Junior Safety Ronald Caldwell’s body was found with several gunshot wounds between two buildings at an apartment complex on University Parkway where he lived…

Northwestern Head Coach Brad Laird spoke of the respect the staff and team had for Ronald Caldwell. Caldwell was recently honored as Northwestern’s Student Athlete of the Month. Northwestern has canceled Saturday’s football game against Nichols State.

 

Good news in the battle against saltwater intrusion impacting drinking water systems in southeast Louisiana. The U-S Army Corps of Engineers released an updated forecast today and the saltwater wedge is no longer expected to reach Orleans or Jefferson Parishes. An underwater levee constructed by the Corps is helping to hold back the salt water.
