Governor John Bel Edwards has asked the Pardon Board to hear the 56 cases from death row inmates seeking clemency. The Board refused to hear the cases, stating rules the cases had to be filed within a year of their last appeal ruling. The cases were filed after Governor Edwards stated he opposes the death penalty.

Louisiana Department of Health has released the first round of bonus payments to over 15 thousand direct support workers who served waiver participants during the pandemic. LDH Assistant Secretary Julie Foster Hagen says payments will be disbursed directly from the agency…

If you’re bitten by a Lone Star tick, you could develop an allergy to red meat. Dr. James Diaz with LSU Health New Orleans says animals carry the chemical Alpha-gal in their blood, and a tick can transmit the antibodies to humans and once infected you are allergic to red meat.

He says ticks contract it usually from White Tail deer and while cases are rare they are seeing an increase in cases among humans.

Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt is qualifying today in the Governor’s race, and former L-A-B-I president Stephen Waguespack and Mandeville Representative Richard Nelson are expected to qualify tomorrow.

Democrat Dustin Granger and Republicans Scott McKnight and former Congressman John Fleming have qualified to run for State Treasurer.

McKnight was asked if a bank offered a better return on investment than others but yet he disagreed with their political stance would he still do business with them. He says he would not go against the values of the people of Louisiana, but he also has a fiduciary responsibility.

Flemming, who worked in the Trump administration says the job of treasure is to preserve and secure taxpayers’ dollars…

Granger is from Lake Charles and he’s a small business owner that has almost 20 years of experience as a financial advisor and investment manager.

The race for governor officially got underway today with the first day of qualifying. Out of the seven major candidates, three of them qualified today. The first was Lake Charles attorney Hunter Lundy, a pro-life Independent, who wants to raise the minimum wage and renew a state sales tax that’s set to expire in 2025.

Republican John Schroder also qualified. Schroder on the polls that show he’s trailing front-runner Jeff Landry by a wide margin…

Former state transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson is also qualified. He’s the lone major Democrat in the race…

Wilson has received the endorsement of current Governor John Bel Edwards.

State Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain qualified today seeking a fifth term. He says the state has to double food production by 2050. He believes it’s possible because food production in the state has increased fourfold since 1960. But he says it must be streamlined and protect the environment at the same time.

The state’s COVID dashboard shows hospitalizations have doubled since June 22nd and the percent positive rate for COVID tests has climbed to 19 percent. Director of Infectious Diseases at LSU Health New Orleans, Doctor Julio Figueroa says the uptick is related to a cycle that will probably reoccur every six months or so…

And in the State Treasurer’s race Democrat Dustin Granger qualified this morning. He’s a Democrat from Lake Charles and former Congressman John Flemming, who worked in the Trump Administration, along with Scott McKnight, another Republican, is also running for state treasurer.

Sixteen people in Louisiana died in June and July from heat-related causes, according to the Louisiana Department of Health. Six of those deaths were in June and 10 were in July. Climate and Preventative Medicine Physician Dr. Alicia Van Doren says it’s driven by climate change and will become warmer over the next five years.

Deaths in the last two months have surpassed the state’s average of 10 heat-related death’s a year over the last decade.

From April 1st to July 29th, there were 3,305 heat-caused emergency room visits, compared to an average of 2,700 over the last ten years. Doren says the burden of heat is not shared equally.

Black American men, pregnant women, and those with underlying conditions suffer at higher rates. Doren says it’s critical for Louisianans to think of extreme heat like other weather disasters, even in the evening.

Eleven Louisiana library systems will soon offer much-needed access to telehealth services thanks to $50 thousand in grants from The Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Louisiana Foundation, in partnership with ConnectLA. State Library of Louisiana Spokesperson Danny Monteverde says these grants will help bridge the gap with healthcare and technology in rural cities…

Patrons will be able to access telehealth solutions in Beauregard, Cameron, Concordia, East Carroll, Franklin, St. John the Baptist, Ouachita, Union, Vermillion, Washington, and West Baton Rouge parishes. Monteverde says this is the first step in closing barriers in the digital divide and healthcare for people who may not be able to afford it…

Monteverde says this may be a more comfortable way for some people to access care that’s just as effective as an in-person visit. He points out research shows when people have access to a doctor virtually, they are more likely to access care.”

Qualifying begins today for the October 14th primary and LA Politics-dot-com publisher Jeremy Alford says he isn’t expecting any surprises when it comes to the governor’s race. He says it looks like all seven of the major players will qualify, and that being said he believes it will leave pollsters and consultants perplexed when predicting voter turnout.

But as in the past, Alford says there could be a candidate waiting in the wings to qualify at the last minute and if so, it would add some early drama to election coverage.

Alford believes any surprises will be among the legislative races. He expects several incumbents will find themselves challenged by substantial candidates.

If all seven formidable candidates do officially jump in the governor’s race, recent polls indicate it will most likely come down to a run-off between Republican Jeff Landry and Democrat Shawn Wilson. But Alford says those predictions could change…

The State Fire Marshal and Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner have issued a statewide burn ban due to the drought-like conditions across the state of Louisiana. Private burning will only be allowed with permission from local fire departments or the government. Fire Marshal Spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says the decision was made to help protect firefighters in extreme conditions…

The burn ban primarily addresses the open burning of brush piles for cleanup on private property. Rodrigue says the Fire Marshal typically recommends burners keep a close watch on burn piles, so they do not result in brush fires…

Although there has not yet been a dramatic increase in the frequency or severity of brush fires, officials are attempting to prevent that possibility as hot, dry conditions continue. Violation of the order could result in criminal and/or civil penalties, but Rodrigue assures residents the rules of the ban are easy to follow and shouldn’t inhibit daily life…

This will be a big season for Johnson, who transitioned to tight end from receiver three seasons ago in New Orleans. Two 16-year-olds were killed in a two-vehicle crash on I-49 in Lafayette Parish early Sunday morning. Trooper Thomas Gossen says Jose Alvarez of Opelousas and Marlin Garcia of Church Point were killed when they were hit from behind by a box truck. Gossen says they believe their vehicle was stopped near the Carencro exit on the interstate. He says it could have been prevented because…

In Ascension Parish, deputies are searching for 16-year-old Jaquin Stephens of Gonzales. He’s accused in the shooting death of his 15-year-old girlfriend Gracie Limas. Sheriff deputies say they were called to a home in Gonzales just before midnight Friday. They believe jealousy was the motive behind the shooting. Stephens is charged with second-degree murder and is believed to be armed and dangerous.

Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin says with the primary eight weeks away, everyone has something to vote for on their ballot this election.

Two teens were fatally injured in a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 49 near the Carencro exit in Lafayette Parish yesterday. Trooper Thomas Gossen says the accident happened around 3:30 AM and killed 16-year-old Jose Alvarez of Opelousas and his passenger 16-year-old Marlin Garcia of Church Point…

Gossen says the box truck struck Alvarez’s vehicle from behind causing it to overturn in the median.

An early Sunday morning two vehicle crash in Lafayette Parish claims the lives of 16-year-olds Jose Alvarez of Opelousas and passenger Marlin Garcia of Church Point. Trooper Thomas Gossen says witnesses tell them the GMC truck the two were in was stopped near the I-49 Carencro exit and the driver of a box truck struck them from behind which caused them to turn over.

A new study from the Consumer Federation of America finds that safe drivers with bad credit pay an average of 905 dollars more than drivers with excellent credit scores. Director of Real Reform Louisiana Ben Riggs says non-driving related factors should not determine auto rates…

According to CFA, State Farm charges people in Louisiana with fair credit a 78 percent surcharge for excellent credit drivers and a 224 percent surcharge for people with poor credit. But Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon believes credit is an accurate predictor of the likelihood of loss for a policyholder…

Riggs says it’s time Louisiana stops allowing auto insurance companies to penalize good drivers, just because their credit score is not good. He says this practice allows insurance providers to pad their profits…

Riggs says three states have passed laws to prohibit using credit scores in setting insurance prices, California, Hawaii, and Massachusetts. He points out all three states have cheaper auto insurance than Louisiana. But Donelon says insurance companies have seen people with poor credit try to use minor accidents to improve their financial situation…

Tonight’s episode of “BBQ USA” on the Food Network is entitled “Battle on the Bayou” and it will feature the University of Louisiana at Lafayette’s Operation Smoke Sheaux. Ryan Gonzales, assistant director of Veteran and Military Students at the university says the Food Network is showcasing their annual fundraiser Operation Smoke Sheaux.

Gonzales says their first event was one of the largest BBQ competitions in the state. So big that it grabbed the attention of the Food Network, and they filmed the annual event back in April. Gonzales says the episode follows six competitors throughout the contest.

And while he wouldn’t reveal the winner of the competition, Gonzales is thrilled about the national exposure the fundraiser will receive and hopes even more contestants come to the Bayou State to showcase their skills next year.

It’s back-to-school time as most students return to class this week. Louisiana Highway Safety Commission spokesperson Gregory Fischer says that means the return of school zone speed limits.

Louisiana law prohibits drivers from using handheld cell phones while driving through an active school zone. A first-time violation can cost a driver up to 500 dollars. Every subsequent violation will result in up to a one-thousand-dollar fine and a 60-day suspended driver’s license.

Fischer says drivers should also watch for school buses that are making multiple stops along neighborhood streets…

The fall election season will ramp up this week as a three-day qualifying period begins tomorrow for candidates to sign up for the elected position they would like to serve. There are seven major candidates in the governor’s race. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says we’ll know by the end of the business day on Thursday if all seven will actually have their name on the ballot…

Pinsonat says at the moment, there have been seven candidates actively campaigning for governor, but there’s a chance one of two of them will look at the political landscape and decide not to qualify…

Pinsonat says there’s still time for a surprise entrance into the governor’s race. He says it’s unlikely, but still possible, especially if that person has deep pockets and can self-finance much of their campaign.

Voters will also be choosing new statewide elected officials, or re-electing in some cases. Pinsonat expects the race for Attorney General, State Treasurer and Secretary of State will be hotly contested, even though there is not as much money in those races…
