The statewide burn ban remains in effect, Governor John Bel Edwards is urging residents to be vigilant and not to burn any trash or anything else outside. He also cautions smokers not to leave any cigarettes unextinguished or to throw cigarette butts out of car windows.

High-profile attorney Ben Crump is demanding the U-S Justice Department pursue federal civil rights charges against the officers involved in the 2019 police custody death of Ronald Greene. Greene’s mother, Mona Hardin, can’t believe it’s been more than four years and no federal indictment…

The Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness spokesperson Mike Steele says firefighters are having a hard time getting the fire under control.

We’re all looking for ways to keep cool these days and make sure our air conditioners are running as efficiently as possible. Home Improvement expert Paul LaGrange says you want to keep your windows, blinds, and curtains closed. And if you must cook, he says to use the microwave, use your stove and oven as little as possible.

The state remains under a burn ban due to the drought and a state of emergency has been declared due to the extreme heat.

A new poll shows Republican Jeff Landry with a big lead in the governor’s race. In the survey of 800 likely voters, Landry with 36 percent of the vote. Democrat Shawn Wilson with 26 percent. LA Politics.com Jeremy Alford says the poll shows Wilson collected 60 percent of the Democratic vote.

The body of a Pearl Habor sailor who died while serving on the USS Oklahoma is returning to Louisiana after more than 80 years. The ship’s Cook First Class Clarence Thompson of New Orleans was killed in the surprise December 7, 1941, attack. His funeral will be held at the veteran’s cemetery in Slidell Friday.

A Louisiana Legislative Auditor’s report reveals $112 million was paid for Medicaid coverage for individuals who live out-of-state. Data Analytic Manager Chris Magee says the payments were made to the insurance companies that provide managed care. During the pandemic the federal government would not allow states to end coverage, however, living out-of-state was an allowable reason.

The audit covered the time period of 2016 to February of this year.

Summer wildfires that began August 14th in Sabine Parish are still contained but crews are still keeping an eye on fire lines. Office of Emergency Preparedness Director Scott Gowen says fires have charred acres of land across the parish…

As we enter the peak of hurricane season, AAA encourages Louisianans to review home and auto insurance policies before a storm hits. Spokesperson Don Redman says now is the time for policyholders to update and review the type of coverage they purchased.

The average U-S flood insurance policy runs around $707 per year, but your annual premium will depend on where you live and the level of coverage you choose. Because homeowners policies in Louisiana do not provide coverage for damage due to floods, Redman says it is important to look into getting a separate flood insurance policy. He urges Louisianans to take photos or video inventory of all items in each room.

When dealing with flood insurance for your vehicle, Redman says the type of coverage is important when it comes to the right protection. He says liability coverage will not be enough to cover flood damage.

Gretna Representative Joe Marino officially resigned Monday from his legislative post to begin his appointment as an Ad Hoc Judge for the 24 Judicial District. The Independent, who was elected to the legislature in 2016 admits he was under the misconception that it was a part-time gig but quickly found out it’s a full-time job.

He says there were approximately 900 bills filed in the last session, which was a fiscal session and typically smaller than other sessions.

Marino says his first term in office was the same year Governor John Bel Edwards submitted his criminal justice reform legislation.

Marino also ended his legislative career as Chair of the House Criminal Justice Committee.

Looking back on his public service as a lawmaker, Marino says he’s most proud of his work with Criminal Justice Reform to add more rehabilitative services to the program and also his work with Dr. Laura Cassidy on how dyslexia is diagnosed, and accommodations are made for students.

Marino also authored legislation to raise the pay for lawmakers that hasn’t been changed in more than four decades. That bill failed to receive passage.

Recent estimates by LSU AG Center experts find record-breaking temperatures and drought conditions are likely to lead to $135 million to $290 million in economic loss of cattle and crops. LSU AG Center Economist Kurt Guidry says beef cattle is getting hit on several fronts with only two and a half to three acres to feed cattle…

Reduced hay production caused by lack of rain is expected to cost cattle raisers $62 million to $108 million dollars. Guidry says this leads to future losses in revenue in coming years. He says producers have faced a 10 percent to 30 percent reduction in permanent herds due to available forage…

The full effect of the drought on cotton, soybeans, and sugarcane will not be known until after harvest.

Only two months after LSU baseball won the national championship, the team is hard at work to build another winning roster. They are losing out on some of their staff from the championship year, but Coach Jay Johnson thinks that it will improve the team’s future success.

Entergy customers will not be disconnected for lack of payment while Louisiana remains under a State of Emergency until September 9th. During last week’s PSC Commission meeting, Commissioner Davante Lewis asked providers not to disconnect anyone’s power due to the ongoing excessive heat advisories. The Louisiana Department of Health says there have been a number of heat-related deaths.

During an appearance on C-N-N’s State of the Union, Senator Bill Cassidy said former President Donald Trump should end his 2024 presidential campaign. Cassidy says the polls indicate Trump can’t beat President Joe Biden in a general election and the former president could also be convicted of a federal crime by the 2024 election. Cassidy says he’ll vote for a Republican candidate that plans to address the future of Social Security…

Cassidy says if nothing is done, Social Security will start to run out of money in about a decade, resulting in a 24-percent benefit cut.

Supermarket giant Aldi  is set to purchase nearly 400 Winn-Dixie and Harvey’s Supermarket from Southeastern Grocers in a cash deal set to close in the first half of 2024. LSU Economist Jim Richardson says the deal is part of the company’s long-term plan to expand.

The race for Insurance Commissioner was decided yesterday when one of the two candidates withdrew from the race. Republican Tim Temple will succeed Jim Donelon who opted not to seek reelection. Governor Edwards says with the state facing an insurance crisis he’s pleased Temple is willing to take on the job.

A poll paid for by Nexstar Media shows Attorney General Jeff Landry with a big lead over his opponents in the governor’s race. Emerson College Polling surveyed likely voters earlier this week and 40-percent of the respondents support Landry.   Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says this poll shows Landry receiving 50-percent of the vote on October 14th is possible.

If Landry receives at least 50-percent of the vote in the primary, he can win the race without the need of a run-off.
