Governor John Bel Edwards says more than 50-thousand acres have been burned by wildfires that have plagued the state. Louisiana Agriculture and Forestry Commissioner Mike Strain says downed trees from recent hurricanes are providing a lot of fuel to the wildfire. He says there was a federal program to assist property in removing downed trees. The average cost was 400 to 500 dollars…

You may want to cook your burgers and hot dogs indoors for Labor Day and Game Day this year. State officials say it would be too risky to light your grill under the statewide burn ban. Director of the Governor’s Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness Casey Tingle says we need to prevent what is already a serious situation from becoming worse.

Baton Rouge Congressman Garret Graves introduced a bill to stop unsafe illegally produced shrimp from reaching U.S. consumers and flooding the market. Graves says this bill helps level the playing field for local shrimpers. He says shrimping is part of the state’s culture and is much healthier than imported shrimp.

The legislation also builds on Graves’s previous efforts to give the USDA the authority to purchase domestic shrimp to supply schools, food banks, and disaster relief programs.

The wildfires in Beauregard Parish have prompted Merryville Police to alert residents to be on the lookout for wild animals that may have retreated inside the town limits. So far this month there have been 600 wildfires in the state, and more are expected.

A German company submitted the winning bid to develop plans to produce wind electricity off of Louisiana’s coast. Jeff Palermo has the story…

Edwards says with tailgating season also beginning, higher education institutions have been asked to prohibit on-campus grilling. So far an estimated 60,000 acres and two people have been wildfire casualties fueled in part by the triple-digit temperatures and one of the worst droughts on record.

Governor Edwards continues to urge residents to abide by the burn ban and he’s also asking individuals not to fire up the grill.  Brooke Thorington has more.

LSU has appointed Brad Ives as the new executive director of LSU’s Institute for Energy Innovation. Ives has served as the executive director of the Center for the Environment at Catawba College in North Carolina since 2022. Ives has experience working with traditional oil and gas companies and green energy companies. Ives will join LSU in October.

Governor Edwards, along with State Ag Commissioner Mike Strain and State Fire Marshall Dan Wallis, are reminding individuals that despite the recent rains’ the wildfires remain a threat. With Labor Day weekend upon us and football season kicking off, Wallis urged residents instead of cooking outdoors to patronize a local restaurant because firing up the grill can be potentially dangerous right now.

So far, an estimated 60,000 acres and two people have been wildfire casualties fueled in part by the triple-digit temperatures and one of the worst droughts on record. Strain says the state needs at least three to four inches of rain because the ground is extremely dry about a foot deep and is basically a tinderbox. Commissioner Strain says the state needs three at least four inches of rain because the ground is extremely dry about a foot deep and is basically a tinderbox. Even with the burn ban in effect, he says the Department of Agriculture has issued more than 40 citations for violations.

Louisiana Congressman Steve Scalise says he’s been diagnosed with the blood cancer multiple myeloma. LSU Health New Orleans Oncologist Doctor Suki Subbiah says 20 years ago, multiple myeloma was essentially a death sentence but now it’s treated very treatable…

State Police say a 3-year-old boy was not properly restrained when the vehicle he was traveling in slammed into a truck towing a grain trailer on LA Hwy 877 in East Carroll Parish yesterday.

Trooper Ryan Davis says three-year-old Tavorious Hopkins of Lake Providence died at a local hospital. Three others received minor to moderate injuries.

State health officials say 25 people have died as a result of heat-related illnesses since June. That’s up from the 16 deaths that were reported on August 4th. Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter says heat exhaustion and heat stroke can sneak up on you very quickly…

Scalise says he’s undergoing treatment which is expected to continue for the next several months. The Republican had blood work done last week after he said he wasn’t feeling well.

The Saints will have a new field goal kicker this year. New Orleans has reportedly traded Will Lutz to the Denver Broncos for a 2024 7th-round pick. The Black and Gold have decided to go with undrafted free-agent kicker Blake Grupe instead. Host of the Locked-on Saints podcast Ross Jackson says the trade should not come as a surprise.

Smoke from wildfires is impacting the air quality in Louisiana. State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter says it’s a good idea to pay attention to local air quality reports.

But for those with respiratory illnesses, he advises they stay indoors as much as possible.

Last year the state set a record, producing more than two million tons of raw sugar last year but growers will not beat that number this year.  Sugarcane Specialist Kenneth Gravois says the full impact of the heat from June through August has yielded fewer crops in Louisiana.
