In St Helena Parish one person is dead and two others injured after a shooting at St. Helena College and Career Academy this afternoon. A second shooting victim reportedly showed up at a local hospital claiming that others may be hurt and third victim is reportedly being airlifted to children’s hospital in Baton Rouge. This is a developing story.

East Baton Rouge District Attorney Hillar Moore is filing an injunction today to stop the upcoming clemency hearings for death row inmates in Louisiana. 56 inmates are seeking to have their sentences reduced to life in prison, the first group of hearings is scheduled for next month.

Louisiana State University of Alexandria has exceeded its goal of enrolling five thousand undergraduate students by 2025, securing its status as the fastest-growing public university in the state. Chancellor Paul Coreil says students transferring to LSUA from other institutions increased by 49 percent last year.

It’s now official, Todd Garvin is no longer head coach at West Monroe High School, after being fired. Garvin was the Rebels head coach for just one game. He was suspended last week after at least four players had to go to the hospital because of heat-related illnesses after practice. He was named head coach in May. Kevin Davis will serve as interim head coach for the season.

New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has nominated ex-Oakland, California police chief Anne Kirkpatrick to be the next NOPD superintendent. Kirkpatrick also served as police chief in Spokane, Washington and her appointment is pending City Council approval.

Of the five candidates who participated in the first statewide televised debate, four said that if elected they would immediately call for a special session to address the state’s insurance crisis. Democrat Shawn Wilson said he’s for legislation that requires insurers to make payments in a certain time period, so policyholders receive the coverage they paid for.

Republican John Schroder said he would call for a summit with several entities to discuss the best way to address the crisis.

A federal judge rules the state must stop sending its most-violent youthful offenders to Angola. Last month the ACLU filed a suit over the deteriorating conditions at the state prison. The ruling says inmates must be removed by September 15^th.

The LSU Board of Supervisors has approved a new ten-year, 36-million-dollar contract for Lady Tigers basketball coach Kim Mulkey. It’s the richest contract in women’s college basketball and board member Remy Starns was happy to vote for it…

It’s going to be the battle of the Tigers this weekend in Baton Rouge. Grambling State will face LSU on the football field for the first time tomorrow night. State police are investigating an officer-involved shooting that happened in Acadia Parish last night. Rayne Police requested assistance following a response to a call of someone firing a gun. Once officers arrived, gunfire was exchanged and the individual was taken to a local hospital with critical injuries. No officers were injured.
