People have begun to panic buy bottled water ever since the announcement of an anticipated saltwater intrusion headed up the Mississippi River was announced. Lieutenant General Russell Honore says this could severely impact local water systems in southeast Louisiana.

Cut 6 (08) “…south Louisiana.”

The City of New Orleans has already declared a state of emergency.

Honore says the Army Corps of Engineers has done some ingenuous work in trying to put a submersible type of levee to block the saltwater from intruding north, but the initial attempt did not work, and they are adding more materials.

Cut 7 (11) “…Plaquemines Parish.”

In addition to local water systems, Honore is worried the saltwater could corrode pipes at oil refineries along the Mississippi River. Honore says you can bring in bottled water and you can bring in desalination units…

Cut 8 (11) “…conserve water.”

Honore encourages residents not to panic but to remain aware of the situation.

The statewide average for a gallon of regular gas in the Bayou State dropped below $3.40 to $3.36 a gallon. Triple-A fuel analyst Don Redman says currently, the statewide average price for a gallon of regular gas is down four cents from a week ago but higher than around this time last year.

Cut 9 (07) “…right now.”

The average price for regular gas in Louisiana a month ago was $3.39 and a year ago $3.12 a gallon. The average cost for regular gas in the nation today is $3.85.

Redman says the drop is due to both Louisiana being an oil-producing state and seeing ease in demand.

Cut 10 (12) “…below ninety.”

Redman says expects the price of fuel to remain under $3.40 a gallon statewide for September and may ultimately drop again some more next month.

Saturday is the last day to register to vote online at geauxvote.com for the October 14th primary. We asked pollster John Couvillion with JMC Analytics his voter turnout prediction for the primary…

Cut 7 (09) “…total turnout.”

In 2019 voter turnout was 46 percent for the gubernatorial primary and 51 percent for the runoff.

This year’s race hasn’t drummed up much excitement and Couvillon says there are two reasons why this race so far can be described as a sleeper.  On the Democratic side…

Cut 8 (11) “…Shawn Wilson.”

On the Republican side, Couvillon says Jeff Landry received backing from the state GOP almost a year ago and no other Republican has taken that away from him. Couvillion says there’s just enough on the Democratic and Republican sides who are favoring their respective candidates which contributes to a lack of energy in the race.

Cut 9 (09)  “…unconscionable.”

Couvillion also believes low unemployment is another reason for the anticipated voter turnout to be in the 40 to 45 percent range. Currently, there are just under three million registered voters in the state.
