Louisiana Senator Bill Cassidy is co-sponsoring the Stop Campus Hazing Act to address violence on college campuses. The federal law would require colleges to include hazing incidents in their annual crime report.

The legislation has the support of Max Gruver’s parents. Gruver died in 2017 from a hazing incident at an LSU fraternity that involved excessive amounts of alcohol.

University of Louisiana System President Dr. Jim Henderson will interview tonight to be the next president at Louisiana Tech. He’s the lone candidate to succeed President Les Guice who’s retiring. Henderson praises the school’s progress and success over the years.

In Shreveport, Mardi Gras 2024 is a geaux after security concerns put the annual event in peril. Stacy Brown with Visit Shreveport-Bossier says about 225,000 attend their five Mardi Gras parades and about 41 percent of them are out-of-town visitors.

After the body of a woman was found in Avoyelles Parish Sunday night, authorities are asking anyone with information to contact them. The Avoyelles Parish Sheriff’s Office says they received a call of a body in a wooded area in the Blue Town Community, just north of Marksville. Foul play is suspected, and the body will be analyzed by the FACES lab in Baton Rouge in hopes of identifying the victim.

The State Fire Marshall is investigating a fatal brush fire that resulted in the discovery of a man’s body in Alexandria on Monday. Spokesperson Ashley Rodrigue says the Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry crews were called in to assist due to the size of the brush fire.

The fire was reported in the 6100 block of LA 488. Rodrigue says the victim is believed to be the 60-year-old homeowner.

Outgoing Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin says he didn’t seek re-election because his health began to suffer due to the stress and pressure he faced associated with voting controversies. Ardoin says he faced harassment and intimidation

Ardoin tried to replace outdated voting machines but in his last attempt in 2021, he received pushback as opponents of the Dominion Voting systems wanted them eliminated as an option. Ardoin says the controversy was one of the reasons he’s leaving after this term

Ardoin says the intimidation he faced has taken a tool but says he is turning his attention to his family and regaining his health.

The Board of Elementary and Secondary Education has once again approved an appeals process to give students who are unable to pass the LEAP test another option to graduate. Some politicians are saying the plan does not make the grade.  In order to apply for an appeal, President Dr. Holly Boffy says appeals will be administered by local school systems.

Louisiana is one of eight states that still require minimum standardized test scores for graduation. And is the only state that has not offered an appeals process.

In a six to five vote, BESE approved lowering the bar for graduating high school seniors. Louisiana Senator John Kennedy believes BESE is taking a massive step backward.

Boffy says four percent of high school seniors are unable to graduate because they can’t pass the LEAP test. That could mean the students are poor test takers not because they can’t read. She points out that students achieve at different levels.

Kennedy says just over a third of Louisiana public high school students perform on grade level.  He says helping a student graduate counts towards the school’s accountability score.

The House Education Committee has scheduled an oversight hearing for Thursday to review the policy.

Since 2020, anyone who was on Medicaid could not be dropped due to pandemic protections, and when that changed, Moller says almost a million people on Medicaid had to have their eligibility reviewed.

Moller says to the state’s credit they’ve done a very good job notifying those on Medicaid of the need to revisit their eligibility. He says a large number of individuals who’ve lost coverage will probably have their status restored…

With annual income eligibility reviews back in place, Moller says several will churn off and on Medicaid coverage, especially those who do not seek regular medical care.

Fog and marsh fires were major contributing factors to the massive car pile-up on I-55 in Saint John the Baptist Parish Monday morning. The low visibility resulted in multiple fatalities, injuries, and crashes. Ag Commissioner Mike Strain says low water levels have only made marsh fires worse.

In addition to a large marsh fire east of New Orleans, Strain says there are also other marsh fires in the state. Those combined with individuals burning trash piles, have significantly decreased visibility for motorists. He urged individuals to abide by local burn bans because the marsh fires can burn for months versus days…

At least two people are reportedly dead after a massive pile-up on Interstate 55 in Saint John the Baptist Parish this morning. Reports say hundreds of vehicles are involved and the interstate is closed in both directions.  State Police is the lead agency investigating the pile-up and Sergeant Kate Stegall says to expect lengthy closures as a result.

Two people have been arrested in connection with the fatal shooting of Northwestern State football player Ronnie Caldwell. Natchitoches police spokesperson John Greely says a former teammate of Caldwell’s, 22-year-old Maurice Campbell of Memphis, has been booked on multiple charges along with Caldwell’s roommate but so far no one has been charged with murder.

In Alexandria, after reports of several individuals waving guns around a parking lot and what appeared to be filming of a video Saturday night, police have made two arrests. A 15-year-old has been charged with Juvenile in Possession of a Firearm, resisting arrest, and possession of a stolen firearm. 20-year-old Robert Drakes was arrested and among his charges are terrorizing. The investigation is ongoing.

Interstate 55 is closed in both directions between Ruddock and Manchac after 25 crashes this morning. The crashes are in three different spots in St. John Parish and at least two people have been killed and 30 reported injuries. Three 18-wheelers were also fully engulfed in flames. Fog and smoke from the marsh fires were contributing factors to the accidents.

The Louisiana Policy Institute for Children is asking parents of children ages 5 and under for their input in the 2023 Parent Poll.

U.S. Representative Mike Johnson from Benton wants to be the next Speaker of the House. Johnson currently serves as vice chairman of the House Republican Conference. LSU Political Science Professor Robert Hogan says having GOP leadership in the chamber should help Johnson’s chances.

Louisiana Citizens policyholders seeking financial assistance to fortify their roof against wind damage can apply for a grant of up to ten thousand dollars at noon today. 500 grants were made available two weeks ago and it took over two minutes before they were gone. Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says interested homeowners should register before the grants are made available…

There’s a link to register for the Louisiana Fortify Homes Program on the Department of Insurance’s homepage. Donelon says the program will provide grants of up to 10-thousand dollars for homeowners to repair or replace their roofs to the Fortified Roof standard.

He says Citizens policyholders are only eligible for the grants that will be awarded today, the homeowners with private insurance will be eligible for the next round of grants that will be handed out…

Besides being a Citizens policyholder, Donelon says there are a couple of other qualifications needed in order to be eligible for the grants that will be distributed today…

Republican Governor-elect Jeff Landry garnered more than fifty percent of the vote and avoided a runoff in a primary that had a turnout of only thirty-six percent. Landry thanked his supporters in Broussard Saturday night and said his victory is historic and symbolic.

Democrat Shawn Wilson was expected to be in a runoff with Landry but came in second with 26-percent of the vote against fourteen other candidates. Wilson said he congratulated Landry and asked him to keep his word that he would continue Medicaid expansion for more than half a million residents in the state and give teachers the pay raise they deserve.

Landry, who had the support of the state GOP for the past year, despite the fact that three other formidable Republicans remained in the race, says the journey to reform the state has only just begun.

Landry received 52-percent of the vote, Democrat Shawn Wilson 26-percent, and everyone else was in single digits. Cross says none of the other candidates made a persuasive case…

By winning the election now, it gives Landry an extra month to prepare to take over as Louisiana’s 57th governor. He will have more time to set up his administration, but Cross says he’s probably ready to move into the governor’s mansion today…

A Frustrating loss for the Saints yesterday as they wasted several chances and lost to the upstart Houston Texans 20-13. New Orleans outgained Houston 430-297, but the Black and Gold were 0 for 3 in the red zone. Coach Dennis Allen says red zone offense continues to be a problem, there were also a couple of missed field goals and a poor first half by the defense…

Saints Quarterback Derek Carr threw for 353 yards and a touchdown. He was also intercepted once. Carr is upset New Orleans could not get the job done in Houston…

The Saints are 3-and-3 and Carr says that’s not where they expected to be, but they have the talent to go on a winning streak…

LSU put it all together on Saturday night as the Fighting Tigers trounced the Auburn Tigers 48-18 in Death Valley. Another big night for Jayden Daniels as he threw for 325 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 93 yards. LSU scored on eight of its ten possessions and Daniels was asked after the game if he gets mad when they don’t score…

The Louisiana Pardon Board denied clemency requests from five death row inmates Friday. The inmates were seeking to have their death sentence changed to life in prison. The cases were fast-tracked by Governor Edwards before he leaves office and there’s been a push for clemency hearings for all 56 death row inmates. Among the reviews denied Friday was from the state’s only female death row inmate and former New Orleans Police Officer Antoinette Frank.

Louisiana Congressman and House Majority Leader Steve Scalise’s attempt to be the next U-S House Speaker is over. Scalise did not have enough votes. In a press conference, Scalise says he will continue as the majority leader but there’s still work to be done.

Scalise could only afford to lose four votes from Republicans and there were at least 17 GOP lawmakers against him, despite receiving the House Republican nomination on Wednesday.

Political analysts are expecting Saturday’s election to result in a run-off in the governor’s race between Republican Jeff Landry and Democrat Shawn Wilson. ULM Political Science Professor Pearson Cross says there are five other main candidates in the race, but none of them including Republican Stephen Waguespack caught fire and swayed votes in their direction….
