The Minden High School graduate drove Woodard and Annie Richardson to the hospital.

The school is holding a blood drive tomorrow from 9 to 3 at the student center.

A new survey by the National Federation of Independent Business indicates a lack of optimism among small business owners in the fourth quarter. State Director Dawn McVea says nearly 22 percent of small business owners say inflation is their biggest obstacle in operating their business.

A consumer Price Index Report released for October showed annual price inflation rose to three point two percent, which was down slightly from three point seven percent in September.

McVea says the survey also shows small business owners are not growing their inventories as labor and energy costs are not falling.

The Optimism Index decreased by one point in October to nearly 91 points, marking the 22nd month below the 50-year average. The last time the Optimism Index was at or above the average was December 2021.

McVea reminds the public that Louisiana charges inventory tax and small business owners purchase additional supplies for the holidays. She urges Louisianans to shop small businesses this holiday season.

ACLU Voting Rights Project attorney Sarah Brannon says they’re extremely pleased with the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals ruling that the current congressional map violates the Voting Rights Act. It’s been ordered to be redrawn with two majority-Black districts. Brannon says the courts want the map finalized by May 2024 so…

The ACLU of Louisiana, the Legal Defense Fund, and the NAACP filed the case against the state and the defendants include the Secretary of State, Louisiana’s Speaker of the House, the Senate President, and the Attorney General.

Judge Shelly Dick issued a January 15th deadline for the state to have a revised map and because a new legislature will be sworn-in January 8th Brannon says Dick could give defendants an extension if they file for one…

Brannon says Governor John Bel Edwards has the authority to call the current legislature into a special session to meet the January deadline and Governor-elect Jeff Landry has indicated he plans to hold a special session for redistricting.

Brannon describes the map plaintiffs submitted to the courts that have two Black-majority districts.

The 2020 Census indicated that 33% of the state’s population is Black therefore two out of the state’s six congressional districts should be drawn so two minority congressional members can be elected.

Natchitoches Parish President John Richmond says he’s relieved a Parish Grand Jury has dismissed assault charges that were filed against him by Latorria Freeman, an opponent in his re-election campaign. He says after a headline reads a parish president is accused of something…

Richmond failed to garner enough votes and Freeman, a Democrat, is in the runoff with Independent John Salter. When asked if the accusation railroaded his re-election campaign, he says we can all play “Monday Morning Quarterback…”

Salter had the most votes in the October primary with almost 28 percent of the votes, followed by Freeman with 27 percent and Richmond in third place with 24 percent.

Freeman filed charges claiming Richmond put his hands on her and pushed her during a supposed altercation at the Natchitoches Jazz/R&B Festival in May. Richmond only recalls a conversation with his accuser.

And while a motive has not been released Walker asked members of the public to reach out for help when they have mental health issues.

The names of the victims were not released but two are in critical but stable condition and another in stable condition. Walker says the fourth victim did not seek medical care.

Walker said the ages of the victims were 62, 65, 72, and 23. He says three were students taking a class at the Lambright Center and one was an instructor.

A LA Tech student spoke to us about the incident and while she did not witness it the Junior says there was a lack of communication and she questioned why the school was never put on lockdown.

And while the student we spoke to, who asked not to be identified, says before Monday’s incident she wasn’t signed up with the school’s emergency response system, she believes students and faculty should have been emailed updates also.

The school is holding a candlelight vigil on the school’s campus this evening and a blood drive on Thursday. LA Tech is also offering group counseling sessions for students impacted by the incident.

JMC Analytics Pollster John Couvillon says turnout among Louisiana’s Democratic voters for the November 18th election may be worse than the gubernatorial primary. He says part of the GOP advantage seems to be a demotivated Democratic base.

Early voting numbers in the Bayou State show only 254,000 people voted that’s 115,000 fewer voters than the October early-voting turnout. Couvillon says this is not a good indication for Democratic candidates who are in big races like Secretary of State and Attorney General.

Couvillon says about five percent of Lafayette parish’s 158,000 registered voters cast a ballot. He expects high-profile local races may create more interest on election day.

The UNO Research Center has released the results of a statewide comprehensive survey. The random poll asked 429 participants to rate Governor John Bel Edwards’ job performance and the incoming Landry administration. Political Science Professor Ed Chervenak says Governor Edwards received a 20 percent higher job approval rating compared to former Governor Bobby Jindal when he left office in 2016.

Respondents age 65 and older were twice as likely to approve of Edwards’ job performance compared to the youngest age group. Chervenak says 17 percent of respondents feel crime should be the main priority for the incoming Landry administration.

The survey also shed light on respondents’ party choices and the factors influencing these preferences.

Prior to 2021, Chervenak says the majority of registered voters were firmly against the idea of legalization. He points out that now 52 percent favor legalizing the recreational use of marijuana.

The survey was conducted from October 25 to November 2.

A very important part of LSU’s historic offense and what could be Jayden Daniels’ Heisman season has been the elite play of Malik Nabers who has 1,284 yards on 72 receptions and 10 touchdown receptions on the season. Rain is falling in the southern half of the state and State Climatologist Barry Keim says any rain is welcome considering 99 percent of the Bayou State is in drought and 88 percent of is in either extreme or exceptional drought. Since October 1st there’s only been an average of one-point-nine inches of rain in the state.

1-55 northbound in St. John the Baptist Parish has reopened. State Transportation says repairs have been completed. It reopened for motorists today that’s after being closed for four weeks that’s after a massive pile-up involving more than 160 vehicles claimed the lives of seven people.

After more than a six-month blackout, the lights are set to go back on in Hollywood South as a deal was reached between the actors union and studios. Director of Louisiana Entertainment Chris Stelly says it’s good news for the businesses and citizens who depend on film production in Louisiana.

Governor John Bel Edwards signed an executive order Thursday and come January, 70,000 state employees will be eligible for paid parental leave.

Edwards says the paid leave will actually help parents be more productive when they return. He says it’s hard for parents to concentrate on work when their mind is one their child.

Attorneys representing the family of Ronnie Caldwell say they are seeking justice and accountability. A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed against Northwestern State and the owners of The Quad apartments where the football player was gunned down on October 12th. Attorney Helen Daniel…

Three days before he was shot 21-year-old Caldwell told his parents that his roommate, 27-year-old John McIntosh, threatened him with a gun. His father asked coach Brad Laird to move his son to a safe location but that never happened. Attorney Johnathan Cox says they want to know if Campus Advantage ran a background check on McIntosh for the safety of Caldwell and other residents at the complex.

The lawsuit is seeking damages, funeral expenses and has requested a trial by jury. Cox says Caldwell and his parents asked for help and failure to act resulted in his death.

Louisiana Congresswoman Julia Letlow has introduced bipartisan legislation to increase access to childcare for small businesses. As a single mother herself, she says the Childcare Small Business Insight and Improvement Act will help parents across the country.

The bill would require the U.S. Small Business Administration to conduct a study on the needs and challenges of for-profit childcare providers and identify resources. Since the pandemic, Letlow says many working mothers had to leave the workforce.

With small businesses still struggling post-pandemic to find qualified workers, Letlow says resolving childcare issues is vital for the economy and families.

Ohio Representative Democrat Greg Landsman is co-sponsoring the bill with Letlow.

With an anticipated low voter turnout of less than 15 percent for the November 18th election, early voting indicates turnout might be slightly higher than anticipated. And John Tobler with the Secretary of State’s Office expects turnout to increase on election day.

Nearly 178 thousand voters showed up to cast their ballot at the close of early voting yesterday.

Out of nearly 3 million registered voters, only 36 percent showed up for the October 18th gubernatorial election. With only one full day left to vote, Tobler reminds everyone polls open at 8:30 am and close at 6:00 pm.

Before tonight’s game against Queens, the reigning National Champions in women’s basketball, the LSU Lady Tigers will be recognized with a banner, and they’ll also receive their rings. Head Coach Kim Mulkey says she’s looking forward to tonight’s ceremony, not just for herself but for her players.
