After losing by one vote in the Caddo Parish Sheriff’s race, Republican John Nickelson has filed a lawsuit seeking a new runoff election against Democrat Henry Whitehorn. A recount this morning discovered six additional votes, three for each candidate, which meant Whitehorn remained the winner. The case will be heard Friday in Caddo District Court.

ULM has fired head football coach Terry Bowden after winning just ten games in three seasons. The Warhawks finished the 2023 campaign on a ten-game losing streak. KNOE-TV Sports Director Aaron Dietrich says despite the losses, it seemed like Bowden had the support of athletics director John Hartwell…

In Caddo Parish Henry Whitehorn remains the winner of the sheriff’s race after a recount this morning. A one-vote victory on November 18th prompted opponent John Nickelson to call for a recount. 7,000 mail-in ballots were rescanned today and each candidate received three additional votes, so Whitehorn is still the winner by one vote.

After allegedly escaping through a Southwest Airlines plane emergency hatch a passenger was arrested at the New Orleans airport last night. Prior to take-off while the plane was still at the terminal a man exited the plane and was apprehended after running away on the tarmac. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office says he was taken to the hospital for evaluation.

It’s the 50th Annual Bayou Classic Saturday but there’s plenty going on today before Southern and Grambling face off in the Proctor & Gamble Historically Black Colleges and Universities football game. Bayou Classic producer and Director Dottie Belletto says the golden anniversary matchup is calling alums far and wide to join the celebration.

Today’s events include Business at the Bayou, a Black Small Business Showcase at the Hyatt Regency in New Orleans. And for the evening hours, it’s the traditional Battle of the Bands and Step Show at the Superdome. Belletto says it’s supersized this year…

The annual step show’s theme this year is “Future” and Belletto says the fraternities and sororities have come up with some clever ways to incorporate the theme into the competition.

Before the game Saturday they’ll also have a family fitness fun walk, a Special Olympics Flag Football game, and a fan festival with a dance party and music.  Belletto says they are kicking it up a notch for their 50th anniversary.

The game kicks off at one. Southern won the classic last year. The Jaguars have won 25 games and Grambling has had 24 wins in the series.  Southern will either retain bragging rights of the series or will be evened up tomorrow night.

Black Friday is about the big national stores finally making a profit and while Small Business Saturday also helps local businesses get into the black, Dawn McVea, state director of the the National Federation of Independent Business says Small Business Saturday is about community…

Small Business Saturday began in 2010 as a way to help local businesses after the Great Recession.

McVea says it’s been a tough year for everyone. Inflation and labor shortages have been especially tough but that means you’re more likely to see business owners while you’re shopping and expect great deals…

McVea also says, that when you shop locally Sixty-Seven Cents out of every dollar stays in the community.

McVea says, that in 2022, Small Business Saturday brought in seventeen point nine billion dollars for small businesses across the nation and since then local businesses have grown. During the pandemic, many began offering services that made them more competitive with large online retailers

While Black Friday is considered the pinnacle of shopping holidays, the National Retail Federation says many consumers are not waiting late in the year to find bargains for Christmas gifts. LSU Marketing Professor Dan Rice says when retailers are getting a jump on Black Friday discounts it’s a win-win.

Rice says even artificial tree retailers are having Christmas in July sales, and online giant Amazon has Prime Days in July and October to motivate consumers.

Inflation plays a big role as to how much individuals will spend on the holidays and Rice says one survey indicates consumers plan to spend more this year than last but not on as many gifts…

During the pandemic, the term supply chain issues became a common phrase and a real frustration for retailers and consumers. But is it still an issue this far out from the pandemic?  Rice says there are still some isolated incidents of shipping disruptions…

The NRF says the average person will spend $875 on gifts, decorations, food, and other seasonal items this year. That’s up $42 from last year.

In Lafayette, a male victim was discovered in the burnt rumble of a house fire on Evangeline Thruway. The body has not been identified and two firefighters also sustained minor injuries while dousing the blaze. A nearby neighbor told a Lafayette TV station says he’s seen a few homeless people staying in abandoned homes in the neighborhood. The investigation is ongoing.

After a one-vote win in Caddo Parish a recount is being held for the Sheriff’s race and the Clerk of Court has found dozens of voting irregularities. The official recount is Monday but apparently two people voted twice, once in early voting and then again for the general election. On Saturday Democrat Henry Whitehorn won by one vote against challenger Republican John Nickelson.

A WalletHub study ranks which retailers are offering the best Black Friday discounts. Analyst Cassie Happe says JCPenney tops the list with an average discount of 59% followed by Macy’s with 58% and in third place Belk with 55%. Despite the discounts, Happe says more than one in three Americans are forgoing gifts this year due to inflation.

Among the best deals for gift cards, WalletHub says when you consider the popularity and best value the top three are Starbucks, Sephora, and Target.

Every year food bourne illnesses cause 48 million cases, 128 thousand hospitalizations, and three thousand deaths according to USDA.

Food that has been left out at room temperature for more than two hours or more than an hour in temperatures above 90 degrees Fahrenheit is unsafe according to USDA.

A Covington family has extra reason to celebrate the holidays, after receiving a double-lung transplant, five-year-old Ava Thomas is home for Thanksgiving this year. Ava who has cystic fibrosis underwent a transplant three years ago but wasn’t able to leave Houston until she was weaned off of oxygen and pain meds following her surgery.
