After weeks of waiting former Grambling President Rick Gallot has signed his contract to be the next University of Louisiana System President. The board offered him the position on October 25th but the contract was delayed after Governor-elect Jeff Landry expressed concern the board approved the appointment without his input. Gallot will oversee nine schools within the UL-system.

Opelousas police officer Savannah Butler faces two counts of negligent injury after her firearm was discharged towards her boss police chief Graig LeBlanc and his wife Crystal. St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz says it happened after an argument between the LeBlancs outside of Butler’s home. Guidroz says the police chief’s hand was injured when he tried to take the gun and the bullet then struck his wife in the arm. Fortunately, the injuries were not serious…

Authorities are searching for Sammy Patrick, a Black male, who they believe could be in Concordia Parish, after he allegedly shot, killed, sexually assaulted, and then set the elderly female victim on fire in Forest, Mississippi, Saturday afternoon. He’s considered armed and extremely dangerous.

An innocent bystander was killed on New Year’s Eve near Westwego in Jefferson Parish as a woman was attempting to retrieve her stolen vehicle. Sheriff Joe Lopinto says when the owner tried to get her vehicle back, she was confronted by three male suspects in the parking lot, and at least one of the suspects fired at the vehicle’s owner…

The Jefferson Parish coroner has identified the victim as 32-year-old Corey Washington.

Keep Louisiana Beautiful (KLB) is asking residents to cut down on waste as one of their New Year’s resolutions. Director Susan Russell suggests using reusable bottles and bags and fewer single-use paper and plastic items.

Morgan City Police have released the name of the woman who died after falling into the Atchafalaya River on December 26th. 49-year-old Angela Maria Clark’s body was found around midnight, after following up on a report of a person who fell into the river in the Front Street area. This is an active investigation.

The Louisiana Violent Crime Task Force has submitted a report for the next Legislature to review. Prairieville Representative Tony Bacala served on the Task Force and says the report contains several broad recommendations and areas to address. He says speeding up the time between an arrest and trial has to be addressed…

Bacala says legislation is also needed to bring real, substantial consequences to juveniles committing serious crimes.

Jay Dardenne’s 35-year political career is ending. He served as Secretary of State, Lt Governor, and is currently Commissioner of Administration. In the state senate, he helped craft several significant laws.

A four-year-old was killed in an Ouachita Parish fatal crash involving two vehicles. Trooper Ryan Davis says the child was a passenger in a Toyota Corolla that slammed into a Ford pickup truck on Highway 546 yesterday afternoon.

The child was properly restrained and later died at a hospital early this morning.

The State Supreme Court opts not to hear Caddo Parish Sheriff candidate Henry Whitehorn’s appeal to keep his one-vote victory in the run-off election.  Political Analyst Scott Hughes says the original trial ruled for a new election in Marchwhich is also the presidential primary, but that was contingent on any appeals.

The feds are giving Louisiana the authority to issue permits and provide oversight for carbon dioxide wells. Officials call it a monumental step in advancing the state’s energy future as it looks to become a leader in carbon capture. Gas Buddy’s Head of Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan is predicting gas prices still could fall below a national average of three dollars per gallon this winter before possibly peaking at four dollars around Memorial Day but it’s still uncertain.

A Chalmette woman has filed a lawsuit seeking to keep former President Donald Trump’s name off of Louisiana’s presidential primary ballot. A similar lawsuit was successful in Colorado, but not in Michigan. Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino says the U-S Supreme Court will eventually have to rule.

The first Buc-cee’s in Louisiana is on track to open in 2025. Ruston Mayor Ronny Walker says $15 million from the bond commission, $6 million from the state, and an expected $6 million from Congress will fund the construction of service roads, interchanges, etc. for the toothy beaver superstore. He says it’s a good return on investment for the state.

Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino says the petitioner believes Trump should be disqualified because he violated Section Three of the 14th Amendment, and that the courts are facing three difficult questions…

On Monday, the Louisiana law that bans procedures to alter the gender of a minor goes into effect. Because of resistance from LGBTQ rights groups, Grant Parish Representative Gabe Firment expects the law to be challenged in court…
