Cynthia Perkins will be officially sentenced to 41 years on Friday Dennis Perkins’s trial is scheduled for May.

The Task Force on Statewide Litter Abatement and Beautification is meeting today. Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser says litter is a growing issue and he’s even tried an experiment in his home parish of Plaquemines to discourage littering, by placing trash cans along stops leading to Highway 23.

After serving nearly 45 years in prison, Vincent Simmons is going home. Simmons, who is Black, was convicted of the attempted aggravated rape of 14-year-old white twin sisters in 1977. Avoyelles Parish District Attorney Charlie Riddle says with today’s sentencing guidelines it would reduce the 100-year sentence against Simmons, and it’s time to move on.

A recent ruling says key evidence was not shared with the defense.

Governor Edwards will renew the Public Health emergency order today and says there will be no mention of face masks in the order and the department of health’s guideline for K-12 schools will relax indoor masking. But masks are still required in healthcare settings.

Attorney General Jeff Landry says she waives her right to an appeal. She is the wife of Dennis Perkins, former Living Parish Sheriff’s Deputy who faces multiple sex charges involving children and rape. Cynthia Perkins’ sentencing is scheduled for Friday.

Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says the big question is: will the Governor veto whatever map comes to his desk?

LSU Health New Orleans is conducting a clinical trial, studying the use of liquid aspirin for those recently diagnosed with COVID. Associate Professor of Surgery Dr. Frank Lau (cow) says liquid aspirin acts as an anticoagulant so it could help prevent blood clots that are common with COVID.

A tragic shooting in Morgan City claims the life of an 11-year old male and police have charged a 14-year old with second-degree murder. Morgan City Police say they were called to a residence Friday evening found several teens in the home. Police Chief James Blair extended sympathy to the victim’s family and urges parents to ensure their homes are safe after the suspect took possession of a loaded gun.

On this Valentine’s Day, the Louisiana Family Forum recognizes the state’s longest married couple, a south Louisiana couple who tied the knot 81 years ago.

When Republican Representative Daryl Deshotel of Marksville deposited $1 million of his own into his campaign account it sent up a flare that the freshman lawmaker might have his eye on a higher office. When asked Deshotel says he’s thinking about it and with the Lieutenant Governor and possibly State Treasurer running for Governor, things are opening up.

As for which statewide office Deshotel is leaning towards, he says he’s keeping it open-ended for the time being.

43-year-old Deshotel is in his second year as a lawmaker and was able to place one million in his campaign account due sale of his former companies Detel Wireless and Detel Computer Solutions. Deshotel says the state needs to invest in infrastructure beyond roads and bridges.

Deshotel says he hasn’t set a timeline on when he might make an announcement for higher office.

New Orleans Representative Royce Duplessis believes there should be two majority-Black districts in order to comply with the Voting Rights Act. Duplessis says the 2020 census numbers show the state’s black population increased by four percent and 33-percent of the state’s total population identifies as black. He says based on those numbers, two of the state’s six congressional districts should be black

The House and Senate-approved Congressional maps are similar to the current Congressional district boundaries, except for slight shifts in political lines. They maintain two separate Congressional districts in north Louisiana. But Duplessis says the state has seen a growth in the black population since 2010 and a decrease in whites, so he told Magee there should be another Black majority district…

Whitworth earned the honor for his tireless community service through his BigWhit 77 Foundation. Lifelong friend Rick Guillot serves as president of the Foundation and summed up watching his friend receive the league’s most prestigious honor in just one word…

Among the bills filed for the March Legislative Session is one that prohibits vaccines on school campuses. Gonzales Republican Representative Kathy Edmonston says a Jefferson Parish family is suing their school after giving a student a COVID shot without parental approval.

Edmonston feels doctors’ offices and clinics are the places to give out shots; not schools.

Filming begins next week for the Disney Plus series of National Treasurer in Baton Rouge. Executive director of Film Baton Rouge Katie Pryor says National Treasure will have an immediate impact on the state’s economy and is spending $17 million on Louisiana payroll alone.
