A another that took effect Monday helps pave the way for Louisiana’s developing wind energy industry. Authored in the legislature by Houma Representative Jerome Zeringue (zer-ANG), the new law increases a previously set limit of just 5000 acres for the development of wind farms to 25-thousand acres.

LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center is embarking on two studies that will look at female athletes’ mental and physical resilience. The Louisiana Department of Health has released a list of exemptions of when an abortion can take place because the pregnancy is medically futile. The list contains 24 conditions that would affect parts of the fetus. The absence of a heart is one condition. The law also calls for two Louisiana physicians to sign off on an abortion before it can happen.

If you’re adopted and 24 or older you can now request a copy of your original birth certificate. Elise Lewis, one of the founders of the Louisiana Coalition for Adoption Reform says can make the request online at the department of health’s vital statistics website.

A law was passed in the most recent legislative session give adoptees the right to their pre-adoption birth certificate.

August is when hurricane season starts to really heat up, and Louisiana Insurance Commissioner Jim Donelon says prepare now for a possible storm damage claim. Donelon says read your property insurance declaration page thoroughly…:

The First Circuit Court of Appeals ruled on Friday that Baton Rouge Judge Don Johnson must sign off on the state’s trigger’s law that bans abortion must go back into effect. Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino is surprised the state’s appeals court took this long to get involved in the case…

Judge Johnson had issued a restraining order against the law from going into effect while he studies the merits of the law.

An accelerated cadet academy for Louisiana State troopers is underway. Sergeant Monroe Dillion says in their 86 years of cadet classes this is their first ever accelerated academy with 28 men and women embarking on their future as a state trooper.

On August 1st a new law forbidding officers from using the smell of marijuana as probable cause to search one’s house goes into effect. New Iberia Representative Marcus Bryant’s House Bill 629 won final passage and was signed into law by the governor. He says his bill codified federal statute into state law. Bryant says it is needed, now that a growing number of citizens are using legal medical marijuana. He says those patients shouldn’t have to worry about what happens if a police officer shows up at their door…

A woman has been arrested in St. Martin Parish for stabbing an officer. A feature film is in the works starring LSU’s beloved mascot Mike the Tiger. It’s titled The Mascot and is loosely based on writer/director Matthew Perkins’ life when he donned the Uga costume at the University of Georgia. He approached his alma mater about the film first but their loss is now LSU’s gain.

Perkins says it’s a heartfelt, coming of age, sports comedy about a quarterback who loses his scholarship to LSU, and then sort of reinvents himself as the mascot. Perkins says it’s more of a parable about identity, and how we all wear masks metaphorically, especially in our formative years in college.

And with the university’s name image and likeness deals chances are you’ll see some LSU student-athletes cast in the film. But Perkins there’s one thing for sure, you’ll see a film crew on the sidelines during football season.

Beginning Monday, military veterans will have the right to carry a concealed weapon without obtaining a permit. The new law was authored in the legislature by Monroe area Senator Jay Morris, who says he was happy to pass legislation to aid those who’ve served their country…:

Under the new law, military veterans may carry a hidden gun without getting a permit; provided they are over 21 and have no criminal felony record. Some object to permitless concealed carry (sometimes called Constitutional Carry) because the current system requires weapons training and proficiency tests. Morris says anyone who’s served in the military has already had such training…:

A vet who encounters police while carrying without a permit might want to also carry some proof of his or her military service. In a recent mass shooter incident in Indiana, the killer was put down by an armed citizen before he could slay more people. Thousands of people will be buying lottery tickets for tonight’s Mega Millions drawing which has a grand prize of one-point-one billion dollars. Louisiana Lottery spokesperson Dustin Annison says it’s one of the largest jackpots in U-S lottery history

The Governor’s Office of Community Programs is hosting several back-to-school community fairs across the state, beginning tomorrow. Director, Katina Semien-Smothers says because they understand that for families, and especially this year with inflation, it’s difficult to purchase school supplies and they wanted to make it a fun event.
