The polio vaccination rate for children entering kindergarten in Louisiana last fall was 98 percent, that’s higher than the national average of 94 percent.

This morning Secretary of State Kyle Ardoin unveiled this year’s “I voted” sticker. It’s a commissioned design by New Orleans artist Becky Fos (pronounced like floss.) It’s a brightly colored oil painting of the state capitol building. The theme of her artwork is “Happy Artist,” and she hopes it will make people happy when they see it.

The Governor’s Litter Abatement and Beautification Task Force has released its initial recommendations on establishing and sustaining litter prevention efforts across Louisiana. The task force was established by executive order in January and Lt. Governor Billy Nungesser says the solutions range from educating the public to promoting community litter abatement activities…

Nungesser says state funding is also part of the effort. He says state dollars are going towards a major cleanup of a burrow pit at the Burden Museum and Gardens in Baton Rouge.

An off-duty deputy and another deputy attempted to perform live saving measures on the child, but she was later pronounced dead at a hospital. 22-year-old Ivy Lee of Lake Charles was booked on second-degree murder and possession of marijuana.

In addition to this program, Freese says there are other programs like Power to Care and the Low Entergy Assistance Program for customers who need assistance with their bill.

Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory is back from a three-week stay at an in-patient rehab facility in Texas. In his first news conference since his return, he said it was hard for him to ask for help.

Guillory said he was treated for alcoholism and post-traumatic stress disorder. He offered a hand to veterans suffering from untreated PTSD and to anyone struggling with alcohol abuse.

Guillory pointed out that alcoholism is a disease, yet he fought attempts to temporarily replace him with an interim administrator while he was at an in-patient facility. He insisted he was available via phone and email.

The three-day peaceful protest by jail inmates in Orleans Parish has ended. Inmates reportedly barricaded themselves inside a pod and refused food, water, and medication. The inmates produced a list of desired changes which included more recreation time and second television. On Sunday night, inmates activated the sprinkler system which began to flood the area.

A Lafayette Police officer is in critical condition after he was hit by an impaired driver and dragged under the vehicle. LPD spokesperson Sgt. Robin Green says it happened early Sunday morning and the suspect is 24-year-old Jaylon Chavis, of Lake Charles, who now faces a list of serious charges.

Brennan was set to begin his sixth season at LSU and he was competing with Jayden Daniels and Garrett Nussmeier to be the starting quarterback. Troopers are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that happened Sunday in Lafourche Parish. Trooper Ross Brennan says 39-year-old Tricia Vicknair of Schriever was killed in the crash and investigators say it happened when she was driving south along LA 20 while in a curve.

Green says the suspect fled the initial stop for reckless driving, but drove into a police blockade…:

Since Roe v Wade was overturned, the state abortion ban was on, then off, then on again. As for the possibility of legislation to amend the ban to allow for the exceptions of rape or incest, President of the Louisiana Family Forum and pro-life advocate Gene Mills believes is highly unlikely.

Devante Lewis with the Louisiana Budget Project fears since conservatives in Louisiana have outlawed abortion that the right to contraception could also be lost. He says if the legislature is truly pro-life they have to be willing to raise the minimum wage, ensure affordable housing and protect existing social safety nets like DCFS, SNAP, and Medicaid.

A Lake Charles man was arrested Sunday morning after reportedly running over a police officer and dragging him approximately 100 feet. The officer was hospitalized for his injuries. This happened during a reckless driving traffic stop. 24-year-old Jaylon Chavis, (cha-VIS) of Lake Charles, is charged with reckless driving, resisting an officer and attempted murder.

Louisiana’s on-again-off-again abortion ban law is on again, and this time it may stick after the state supreme court rejected to hear an appeal. Loyola University law professor Dane Ciolino while some feel the lack of exceptions for rape and incest are too stringent, he says there’s a proper process for getting that done…:

St. Tammany Parish Coroner Dr. Charles Preston is very concerned with escalating fentanyl overdose deaths. Last month 15-year-old died from a fentanyl overdose. Two people have since been arrested in connection and charged with murder. Dr. Preston says the fentanyl issues are growing like a weed…:

Things were much different this time six years ago as many residents’ homes and businesses flooded. Baton Rouge Mayor Sharon Broome was in the midst of campaigning for her first mayoral term. After living in what was designated as a no flood zone since 1999, Broome says like many others she was in shock when she left her house that Saturday.

It wasn’t until November 2017 that she was able to live in her home again. She says the city continues to work on drainage issues.

The Louisiana Supreme Court has denied an appeal of pro-choice advocates challenging the state’s trigger laws banning most abortions. The law went into effect with the U.S. Supreme Court’s overturning of Roe vs Wade in late June. But due to a lawsuit it’s been on and off ever since in Louisiana. The state’s highest court ruling Friday means abortions remains illegal in Louisiana.

A judge has denied Washington Parish Sheriff Randy Seal’s attempt to collect almost $40 thousand in back taxes from a Mount Herman cattle rancher Jason Smith. Smith sells cuts of beef directly to customers at his farm. In Louisiana farm products and or produce are tax exempt, Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain says the next step is assuring this doesn’t come up again…:

The sheriff says he does not plan to appeal.

On Friday the Louisiana Supreme Court denied an appeal filed by the plaintiffs in the legal battle over the state’s abortion ban, thus keeping the ban in place and making abortions illegal in Louisiana. It was a major victory for pro-life advocates and the plaintiffs vow to continue litigation to legalize abortion in the state.
