Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office Sergeant Nicholas Pepper was killed when a suspect rammed into his police unit Sunday. State trooper Thomas Gossen says after the suspect fled Houma police into Lafourche Parish, Pepper’s vehicle was blocking traffic to keep the public safe as negotiations were underway.

The suspect was hospitalized with moderate injuries.

 

Gas prices are on the rise again, up a dime from last week. Triple-A fuel analyst Don Redman says we normally see prices go up this time of the year as refineries switch from winter to summer-grade gasoline.

The statewide average for a gallon of regular gas is $3.18.

LSU forward Angel Reese is receiving criticism after taunting Iowa star player Caitlin Clark in the final moments of the National Championship game Sunday. Footage of Reese waving her hand in Clark’s face has gone viral and during the post-game press conference, the Baltimore native defended her actions.

Lafourche Parish Sergeant Nicholas Pepper was killed after a fleeing suspect rammed into his police unit during a pursuit Sunday morning. State Police Trooper Thomas Gossen says Houma officers attempted to stop the vehicle for a traffic violation, but the suspect fled, and the pursuit entered into Lafourche Parish

The suspect remains in the hospital with moderate injuries and the investigation is ongoing.

Among the bills filed for the legislative session, which begins a week from today, would add the exceptions of rape and incest to the state’s abortion ban.  New Orleans Representative Delisha Boyd says girls as young as nine could be forced to carry a child.

Boyd’s own mother gave birth to her when she was fifteen years old.

The Louisiana Right to Life says the circumstances of a child’s conception has no bearing on his or her human dignity and do not impair his or her right to life.

Reese waved her hand and pointed to her finger where her championship ring would go, a gesture that Clark herself has done to other players. Reese called out the hypocrisy of her receiving criticism.

New Orleans Representative Delisha Boyd has filed legislation to add rape and incest as exceptions to the state’s abortion ban. She says without them there is no protection for children who are victims of rape and the forced trauma, mentally and physically, of giving birth before they’ve matured.

Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Sergeant Nick Pepper was killed in a fatal crash Sunday after a suspect rammed Pepper’s vehicle. Sheriff Craig Webre extended sympathy to Pepper’s family and praised his service with the department where Pepper’s wife Christie also works as an investigator. State police are overseeing the investigation.

Last night the LSU Lady Tigers defeated Virginia Tech in the Final Four and will play for their first National Championship. The Tigers rallied back from a 12-point deficit in the third quarter to beat the Hokies 79-72. Coach Kim Mulkey’s bubblegum pink jacket proved to be lucky last night and she’s trying to let it all sink in.

Governor Edwards urges Medicaid recipients to check their eligibility status to avoid losing coverage in a public service announcement released earlier today. Eligibility reviews are usually done yearly but were paused due to the pandemic. Edwards says this is an important and critical process for many Louisianans.

It will cost the state close to $196 million to conduct outreach for eligibility reviews.

Among the legislation filed for the upcoming session is one to bestow the designation of the official state nut to the pecan. Alexandria Representative Lance Harris is sponsoring the bill and he says since Louisiana sports one of the largest crops of pecans in the south and Louisianans love them and it’s time to make it official.

Alexandria Representative Lance Harris has filed some nutty legislation for the upcoming session. Because Louisiana harvests an average of 17.7 million pounds of pecans annually and ranks top five among pecan-producing states he wants it to be honored as the state nut.

A 19-year-old student at Southwood High School is facing charges after a school resource officer allegedly found a fully loaded gun in his backpack. Caddo Parish Sheriff Steve Prator says Officer Calvin Williams confronted Caleb Morris after he allegedly threatened to kill a coach at the school…

Morris faces several charges including terrorizing and possession of a weapon in a gun free zone.

Minden Police have made two arrests in the shooting of at least four people at a gathering Sunday night. The shooting happened at Ewell Park Recreation Center. Police Chief Jared McIver says his officers responded quickly.

20-year-old Reginald Moore of Heflin and 22-year-old Jamontae Holyfield of Homer have been arrested so far and more are anticipated.

Addiction specialists are praising the FDA’s approval of over-the-counter Narcan to help with the ongoing opioid crisis. Director of Addiction Psychiatry at LSU Health New Orleans, Dr. Lee Michals is hopeful with Narcan more widely available the number of overdose deaths will decrease.

Four Louisiana parishes are ranked in the top 10 in the US for population loss in 2022. St. John the Baptist ranked in second place, Terrebonne in third, and Plaquemines in fourth place. St. Charles Parish is in the 8th spot. Hurricane Ida, which struck south Louisiana in August of 2021 impacted the four ranked parishes.
