The Louisiana Partnership for Children and Families says if the shutdown goes on much longer – and there’s no end in sight – some 800-thousand SNAP recipients might not get their benefits come November 1st – especially concerning with Thanksgiving and school vacations right around the corner.

Getting the gas gauge to “full” is less likely to leave your bank account “empty.” The statewide average for a gallon of regular unleaded is $2.62. That’s down six cents from a week ago. Nick Chabarria with Triple-A says this is the time of year when we typically see gas prices start to come down.

Chabarria says gas prices have remained relatively low this year – not just in Louisiana but all across the country.

Businesses which need to report their monthly waste tire fees to the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality now have an online portal to use for that purpose. LDEQ Undersecretary Theresa Delafosse (DELL-ah-foss) says it’s meant to make the task a lot more convenient.

Delafosse says not only is the new system more convenient, it’s also much more simple to use.

Delafosse says the online portal went live last month; and so far, participation has been strong.

President Trump honors Louisiana’s two national championship baseball teams at the White House. In a 30-minute ceremony in the East Wing, Trump praised the LSU Tigers and the LSU-Shreveport Pilots. Trump noted that many LSU players were drafted by Major League Baseball teams following their College World Series win.

LSU-Shreveport became the first college baseball team at any level to go through an entire season undefeated, going 59-and-0. LSU, on the other hand, went 53-and-15 en route to their eighth College World Series title; but Trump says with so many future Major Leaguers on the team, they perhaps should have done even better.

Firefighters pulled nine-year-old Aaliyah Robinson and five-year-old Danielle Spearman from the burning home; they were hospitalized in critical condition until family members made the difficult decision to take them off life support. Shreveport Fire Chief Clarence Reese says while the fire is being investigated as arson, investigators are still looking for specific details.

LSU’s offensive line has struggled to be dominant in the trenches and win the line of scrimmage. After the 31-24 loss to Vanderbilt, Head Coach Brian Kelly says that the entire unit needs to play with more physicality moving forward, especially with number-three Texas A&M coming to Baton Rouge this weekend.

Sophomore starting left tackle Tyree Adams will be out for this week’s game after he suffered an ankle injury against Vanderbilt. Kelly says that sophomore D-J Chester will take his place and says he has full confidence in his abilities.

The Tigers offensive line will have a tall task in facing Texas A&M’s pass rushers, specifically defensive end Cashius Howell, who has eight and a half total sacks on the year. With Tyree Adams out, Kelly says that the decision to play Chester over freshman Carius Curne at left tackle is a result of Chester’s valuable game experience.

Saints quarterback Spencer Rattler threw three interceptions and lost a fumble in the 26-14 loss to the Bears after coming into the game with no turnovers. Head coach Kellen Moore says that despite the poor performance, Rattler will remain as the starting quarterback while backup Tyler Shough continues to develop.

A 17-year-old hunter from Monroe is killed by a lightning strike in Union Parish over the weekend. Colton Honeycutt was inside an elevated deer stand in a remote wooded area when a storm came through Saturday. Sheriff Dusty Gates says the area was hard for first responders to get to.

Honeycutt was hunting by himself; the only way the sheriff’s office found out was from family members who went searching for him when he didn’t return home.

St. Tammany Parish unveiled the opening of EquipmentShare in Lacombe, which is one of the nation’s fastest-growing construction-technology and equipment-rental companies. Russell Richardson, the president and CEO of the St. Tammany Economic Development Corporation, says launching the company in Lacombe brings excitement for the future of the parish.

Gates says Honeycutt was hunting by himself, so the only way that the sheriff’s department was notified about what happened was by family members who went out to look for him.

Gates says the area was hard for first responders to get to the area.

By the time first responders found Honeycutt, he was dead.

The LSU Tigers are 5-2 following a rare loss to Vanderbilt and the fan base is not happy with Coach Brian Kelly. Going into the season, the Tigers were considered a national championship contender, but another loss and LSU will likely miss out on the college football playoff. Some fans are calling for Kelly to be fired and the veteran head coach recognizes everybody’s angst….

According to third quarter filings, Senator Bill Cassidy has 9.5 million dollars in campaign funds as he gears up for his re-election bid. Political analyst Bernie Pinsonat says Cassidy continues to do well in getting donors to support his campaign.

A special session begins on Thursday at the state capitol, as lawmakers look at delaying the party primaries for the federal elections. Andre Champagne has the story.

The legislature begins a special session Thursday. The only item on the agenda is adjusting the qualifying period and the primary dates for the 2026 federal elections, as the Supreme Court considers the constitutionality of the creation of the state’s second Black congressional district. Advocate political reporter Tyler Bridges talked about it on Talk Louisiana.

Bridges also expects legislation to be filed that would switch next year’s federal elections back to an open primary, pushing qualifying to the summer time.

The latest campaign finance reports involving the candidates for the 2026 Senate show Republican Incumbent Bill Cassidy with a large lead over his main challengers. Jeanne Burns has the story.

We’re expected to learn more this afternoon about a house fire in Shreveport that killed two children last week. Investigators have determined that the fire was intentionally set and are looking for those who did it. Firefighters pulled an eight-year-old and a five-year-old from the house; but after a week-long battle, they did not survive.

Louisiana’s two national championship baseball teams will be at the White House today. LSU-Shreveport wrapped up an undefeated season with an NAIA World Series title, while LSU won the College World Series in Omaha for the eighth time. LSU Head Coach Jay Johnson says most of the team was able to make the trip.

While LSU baseball continues to bask in championship glory, the football team’s chances of a title pretty much went up in smoke this weekend, thanks to a 31-24 loss to Vanderbilt. LSU had no answers for Vandy quarterback Diego Pavia (PAH-vee-ah), who threw for 160 yards and a touchdown and rushed for 86 yards and two touchdowns. Coach Brian Kelly says the goal was to prevent Pavia from beating them with his legs.

A close call for the sheriff of Assumption Parish, as he’s shot by a shooting suspect he was confronting. Sheriff’s spokesman Lonny Cavalier says Sheriff Leland Falcon was grazed by a bullet and is doing fine. One of Falcon’s deputies returned fire during the confrontation and hit the suspect. Cavalier says that suspect and the victim of the original shooting that led to the 911 call were taken to hospitals.

The assistant police chief in Rayville, meanwhile, finds himself on the other side of the law. Czyz (“chizh”) Williams is accused of selling department firearms for his own gain and collecting donations for non-existent crime prevention programs and pocketing the money. State Police Trooper Ryan Davis says incidents like this erodes trust.

Southeastern Louisiana University officially opens its new Robin Roberts Broadcast Media Center. President Dr. William Wainwright says the university is proud to have the name of one of its most prominent graduates affixed to the facility, and she’s a main catalyst behind its construction.

A close call for the sheriff of Assumption Parish, as he’s shot by a shooting suspect he was confronting. Sheriff’s spokesman Lonny Cavalier says Sheriff Leland Falcon was close to the scene when the call for assistance came down, so he responded and encountered the suspect.

Falcon was grazed by the suspect’s bullet, was briefly hospitalized and is doing fine. A deputy returned fire, striking the suspect, who is in critical but stable condition.

With its famous namesake on hand, Southeastern Louisiana University officially opens its new Robin Roberts Broadcast Media Center. President Dr. William Wainwright says it includes a newsroom, a film studio and a multimedia studio, giving students experience in all facets of broadcasting.
