A jury in Ouachita Parish has given a guilty verdict to the man accused of shooting at two Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents. LDWF spokesman Adam Einck says 29-year-old Luke Hust has been convicted of two counts of attempted first degree murder and a count of illegal possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. With the holiday season upon us, many parents are looking for the hottest gifts to give their kids. “Hoverboards” are one of the most sought after gifts this year but these self-balancing motorized scooters have been known to burst into flames. State Fire Marshall Butch Browning says hoverboards blowing up isn’t an unusual occurrence. In November, A Lafitte resident was hurt by a fire started when the scooter was being charged. Buyers should check to make sure their items are coming from a reputable source and follow instructions when it comes to properly charging the hoverboard.

A national credit reporting agency says Louisiana has several challenges ahead, much of the Jindal Administration’s plan to solve the $487 million midyear shortfall has only short term fixes. State Treasurer John Kennedy says if our state’s credit rating is lowered, tax payers will be force to dish out more when Louisiana borrows money to build roads, bridges and restore our coastline. He says Fitch ratings believes Governor-elect John Bel Edwards and lawmakers will get the state’s fiscal house in order.

A longtime manager at a maritime skills development center was shot and killed by an employee in Kenner. Authorities say the suspect,50-year-old John Spears of Marrero, waited for police to arrive and arrest him. The murder happened at the Houston Marine in a strip mall at about 3:30 p.m. The victim, 49-year-old Anthony Tardo of Mandeville, worked for the business for 19 years.

At the Mercedes-Benz Superdome yesterday, four champions were crowned in high school football. In Division One,…Catholic upset Rummel 31-28. While in division two Parkview Baptist defeated St. Thomas More 24-21 as a 37-yard touchdown pass by Reggie Hayes was the game winner.

In Division Three…Notre Dame finished off an undefeated season by beating Riverside 13-3. It’s the fifth state title for the Pioneers and in Division one Southern Lab beat St. Mary’s 36-2.

Looking ahead to next week…In Class 5A…it will be Zachary versus John Ehret in the title. In Four-A…defending champion Neville will face Edna Karr, over in 3A….Lutcher will battle rival St. James. In two-A, Mangham will take on Kinder and in one-A…Haynesville will battle Kentwood.

Lebron James scored 37 points but the Pelicans outlasted the Cleveland Cavaliers 114-108 in overtime last night. Anthony Davis led the way for New Orleans as he scored 31 points and had 12 rebounds. Davis had six in O-T.

In college basketball…Louisiana Tech needed double overtime to beat Jackson State 95-88. Southern over Southeastern Louisiana 73-69.

In college football…Grambling State faces Alcorn State in the SWAC Championship at 3 PM. At Six o’ clock tonight, McNeese State will battle Sam Houston State. The Cowboys are undefeated on the year and own a victory over the Bearkats.

On Sunday, the Saints take on the undefeated Carolina Panthers and we’ll find out where LSU and Louisiana Tech will go bowling. The Tigers could go either to bowls Florida or Texas, while the Bulldogs could receive a bid to the New Orleans Bowl.

It looks as though a pretty stiff competition is brewing in the race to be Louisiana’s next Speaker of the House. Edwards says he’s backing New Orlreans Democratic state Representative Wal Leger. A group of statewide conservatives are working hard to get support for Republican state Representative Cameron Henry to lead the lower chamber. The election occurs January 11th.

The season is over for the Amite High School football team. This morning a judge dismissed the lawsuit seeking to toss the suspension of Amite from the playoffs as ruled by the Louisiana High School Athletic Association, saying the court does not have the power to second guess a private organization’s decision. This means the ruling stands from the LHSAA stating Amite can’t compete in the Class 3A semi-final game because of a bench clearing fight during their last victory. St. James automatically advances to the title game.

The Baton Rouge Police Department says one of two men accused in the murders and kidnappings of the Duplantiers is back in Louisiana after he was extradited back today from Florida. They say 42-year-old Ernesto Alonso is officially charged with 2 counts each of first degree murder and second degree kidnapping. His alleged accomplice, 48-year-old Frank Garcia, is still in the Florida Jail.

A state judge has dismissed the lawsuit filed by the Tangipahoa Parish School System on behalf of Amite High School in an effort to lift the football team’s suspension from the Class 3A playoffs. The LHSAA ruled Amite couldn’t compete in the semi-finals because a bench clearing brawl broke out in their previous victory. Legal analyst Tim Meche isn’t surprised…:

A lawyer representing Amite says they are disappointed in the ruling for the team and the kids, but there is no chance for an appeal and the season is over.

The AP is reporting there is a stiff competition brewing in the race to be Louisiana’s next House speaker. Governor-elect John Bel Edwards says he supports Democrat Walt Leger, but Republican Cameron Henry is also running. Questions are being raised as to whether or not this leadership dispute could make things more complicated for lawmakers to work together in February’s special session to address the state’s budget woes.
