Louisiana has the highest incarceration rate in the United States and Louisiana Supreme Court Chief Justice Bernette Johnson wants to reduce the number of low level inmates, which will save the state money. She says comprehensive solutions to the state’s over-incarceration should include changes to pre-trial services, like South Carolina and Kentucky have done…:

The Red Cross has been active in and around the state assisting those affected by historic flooding. Louisiana Red Cross spokeswoman Nancy Malone says hundreds of disaster workers are responding throughout the state. She says more than 200 people stayed overnight in the 14 Red Cross and community run shelters…:

Governor John Bel Edwards has released a list of additional parishes he’s requesting the the federal government declare disaster areas so residents affected by the flood can get assistance. The newly requested parishes are Beauregard, Bienville, Caddo, Caldwell, DeSoto, LaSalle, Livingston, Madison, Natchitoches, St. Tammany, Tagnipahoa, Union, Vernon, Washington, West Carroll, and Winn. Already approved are Bossier, Claiborne, Grant, Morehouse, Ouachita, Richland, and Webster.

LSU is launching the car sharing service, Zipcar, so students without a vehicle can rent one by the hour, week, or month. Jeff Campbell, LSU’s Sr. Director of Parking and Transportation Services, says anyone interested would pay a yearly membership fee and find the vehicles conveniently located around campus….:

Former LSU football player Mo Claiborne released a statement today regarding the fact that his 2011 championship ring was being auctioned off on Ebay. He asserts the ring was taken from him without his knowledge and that he’d never sell any of his LSU memorabilia.

The Pelicans were no match last night for the Golden State Warriors. Stephen Curry had 27 points, five rebounds and five assists as the Warriors won their 60th game of the season by beating New Orleans 125 to 107. The Pelicans continue their road trip on Wednesday when they visit Sacramento.

The ULM men’s basketball is in Greenville, South Carolina for its CIT Opening Round matchup with Furman. The Warhawks have won five in a row on the road, while Furman is 13-and-1 at home this season.

Louisiana Tech will participate in the inaugural Vegas 16 Tournament. It will be an eight-team tournament that will begin on March 28th at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas. The Bulldogs first game is a week from Monday against East Tennessee State at 10:30 PM.

Southern leaves today for its opening round matchup with Holy Cross tomorrow night in Dayton, Ohio. The Crusaders are 14-19, but are in the tournament because they won the Patriot League Tournament.

Louisiana is dealing with historic flooding and it’s causing several road closures and officials are keeping a close eye on the interstates. State Police say the I-10 at the Texas border could close at some point today due to the rising Sabine River. Sgt James Anderson says, in the event of the closure, motorists traveling to Texas today should make alternate plans…:

The I-10/I-59 in Slidell remains open, but state police say they are closely monitoring the Pearl River water line there. There are still several parishes throughout the state that remain under a flood warning from the National Weather Service. Water has started to recede from ares in south Bossier and on the Red River in north Louisiana. Officials are watching the Pearl River in southeast Louisiana, but say I-10 and I-59 in Slidell will remain open. But in southwest Louisiana, DOTD says they will close I-10 this morning along the Texas boarder due to flooding on the Sabine River.

Edwards signed several revenue bills into law Monday including the one that raises the cigarette tax 22 cents to $1.08 per pack, and also the increased alcohol tax measure. Both go into effect April 1st.

The Department of Transportation says its preparing for the closure of I-10 this morning at the Sabine River near the Texas State line due to flooding. A flood warning is in place through the region. At LSU’s annual pro day Monday, players put on an impressive showing as linebacker Deion Jones ran a 4.38 40-yard dash and safety Jalen Mills a 4.48. Saints General Manager Mickey Loomis was in attendance there, and said free agency is not over for New Orleans. He wouldn’t comment on a possible contract extension with Drew Brees.

In college hoops news, it’s reported that LSU freshman star Ben Simmons has already decided to sign with an agent for his pro career. Speculation increased that Simmons would leave college to enter the NBA draft after the Tigers’ ended their season on Sunday evening.

Tulane has fired their men’s basketball coach, Ed Conroy. He finished off his 6th season on Saturday in a loss to Memphis in the semifinals of the American Men’s Basketball Championship.

Louisiana Tech isn’t done with basketball as the Bulldogs will take part in the inaugural Vegas 16 which is an 8 team, single elimination three day event. It’s slated for March 28-30 at Mandalay Bay in Las Vegas.

The ULM men’s basketball team begins their post-season today as the Warhawks travel to face Furman in the opening round of the CIT.

Also in the CIT, UL-Lafayette will host Southland Conference opponent Texas A&M Corpus Christ tomorrow.

In the NCAA tournament, Southern takes on Holy Cross Wednesday.

Former LSU basketball coach Trent Johnson was fired Monday by TCU after 4 seasons.

In college baseball, McNeese State will host ULM in a pair of mid-week contests today and tomorrow in Lake Charles. They school’s athletic department says it will be collecting canned goods during the games for those affected by floods in Northeast and Southwest Louisiana.

Tulane is at Nicholls, Grambling is at Arkansas, South Alabama is at Southeastern.

Lions left-hander Kyle Cedotal has been named the Southland Conference Pitcher of the Week. The senior from Denham Springs carried a perfect game into the 8th inning of SLU’s conference opener against UIW.

State officials are urging those with flood damage to go ahead and fill out the form for federal aid, even if your parish has not yet been declared a disaster area. You can fill out the FEMA form at emergency-dot-la-dot-gov. The state Department of Children and Family services is also encouraging those who have experienced loss to pre-register for benefits under the Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program.
