Qualifying has wrapped up and the field is set for what should be a highly competitive governor’s race as the southeast’s only Democrat defends his seat against two Republicans contenders.
The race has only recently started to pick up intensity, and Political Analyst Bernie Pinsonat says within the next two weeks expect the election season yard signs and billboards to be in full bloom.
Governor Edwards and Eddie Rispone have already begun their statewide TV ad campaign. Congressman Ralph Abraham says he’ll begin airing his next week.
This time last year analysts predicted the 2019 fall election could shatter spending records. Pinsonat says it may not break any records, but it’s likely to come very close.
The only other race that is likely to crack a million dollars of spending is Insurance Commissioner, where Tim Temple, who is challenging incumbent Jim Donelon, has pledged to self-fund a million-dollar campaign.
With no federal races and few other competitive governor’s races nationwide, Louisiana is set to become a major focus for both parties. Pinsonat says expect a flood of out of state money and other assets to sweep in.
The primary is set for October 12th.

The family of a black man shot dead in a motel room by a West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s deputy is requesting a federal investigation into the incident, stemming from their distrust of local authorities. Attorney for the family Ben Crump says State Police are not being transparent about their investigation into the death of 38-year-old Josef Richardson.
Cut 10 (08) “…in his underwear.”
Richardson, who was unarmed, was killed by a shot to the back of the neck in a motel room near Port Allen as deputies were serving a warrant. Crump says the only thing the officers recovered in the incident was about $300 in marijuana and 3 pills of methamphetamine.
Cut 11 (09) “…recreational marijuana.”
Richardson was in the motel room with his girlfriend, who is facing drug charges. But investigators have not released any information on why the deputy fired his weapon. Crump says the family does not feel confident in about the State Police investigation of the West Baton Rouge Sheriff’s Office.
Cut 12 (10) “…be due process.”

Gas is down nearly seven cents over last month in Louisiana as the typical fall gas price reduction appears to be arriving a month early.
AAA fuel analyst Don Redman warns it’s not just the usual seasonal market forces at work. Prices are notably lower than they were this time last year.
The average for a gallon in Louisiana is 2.31 a gallon, down from 2.38 last month, and 2.64 this time last year.
The global economy appears to be slowing down, and there are growing fears the US could be looking at a similar fate in the near future. Redman says those concerns are translating into lower prices at the pump.
Redman says he expects prices to fall under two dollars a gallon in some parts of the state by September if demand continues to crater.
