A research team at LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center has been awarded a five year, $4.5 million grant. It comes from the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute, to evaluate two treatments for childhood obesity. Dr. Amanda Staiano says they are accessing families via pediatricians.

Staiano says they are working with families not only in Louisiana, but Missouri and New York. The research is expected to have a wide distribution of results.

A Legislative Auditor’s report says some companies that are paid by the state to help run Medicaid are not providing the Department of Health with information on what they are charging for their services. Managed Care Organizations, or MCOs, are required to give LDH detailed information that’s used to set the rates they are in turn paid. Legislative Auditor Daryl Purpera:
Purpera says it’s not just MCO’s at fault, LDH has been lax about requiring the information. He says this may allow for people abusing Medicaid to get away with fraud, because the proper checks and balances are not being enforced.
The Auditor says this could also lead to a situation where the companies not providing the information, are in turn being paid more than they should because the state cannot verify the legitimacy of their charges.

Adriance says recently are some harvest rates higher than last year, but still in line with other years.

NOAA fisheries gave each of the Gulf States an exempted fishing permit, which Adriance says allows states to manage their own recreational red snapper season.

Red Snapper season runs through July 8th.
