Republican Governor-elect Jeff Landry garnered more than fifty percent of the vote and avoided a runoff in a primary that had a turnout of only thirty-six percent. Landry thanked his supporters in Broussard Saturday night and said his victory is historic and symbolic.

Landry received 52-percent of the vote, Democrat Shawn Wilson 26-percent, and everyone else was in single digits. Cross says none of the other candidates made a persuasive case…

By winning the election now, it gives Landry an extra month to prepare to take over as Louisiana’s 57th governor.

Republican Jeff Landry winning the governor’s race in the primary was a surprise to political watchers. JMC Analytics Pollster John Couvillon says Landry receiving 12-percent of the Black vote was a big key in Saturday’s victory. He says that’s unprecedented for a white candidate in a statewide race to receive that much support from Black voters…

The U.S. House is expected to try again tomorrow and elect a new Speaker of the House. Baton Rouge Congressman Garret Graves says Ohio Representative Jim Jordan is the top candidate and it’s not a given that he’ll get the 217 votes to replace Kevin McCarthy.
