A House bill to legalize recreational cannabis use in Louisiana was killed in committee, when they voted to involuntarily defer the bill. 6 of the nine committee members who voted to shelve the measure gave no reason for their opposition. Bill sponsor Candace Newell, of New Orleans, says she’ll try again next year.

 

An ATV crash in Slidell claims the life of a 14-year-old girl and leaves another girl injured. St. Tammany Sheriff’s spokesperson Suzanne Carboni says it’s a parent’s worst nightmare…:

The victim is identified at Samia Rogers. The injured girl is in the hospital but will recover.

More than 150 new jobs are coming to Shreveport as Prolec GE will invest 28-million dollars to expand its Caddo Parish facility to manufacture electrical transformers used in wind farms, solar parks and renewable energy applications. Prolec’s Sergio Fernandez says construction on the new line will begin in June…:

Nicholls shocked the no. 1 ranked Tigers baseball team with a 6-5 victory in Alex Box. LSU got off to a slow start thanks to a stifling Colonel’s defense, but took a 4-3 lead in the bottom of the sixth and were tied heading into the ninth. With bases loaded, Nicholls pinch hitter Brayden Kuriger broke the tie with a single to right and a second run scored off an LSU error. Kuriiger said he stayed ready for his opportunity…

The Pelicans announced guard CJ McCollum underwent successful surgery yesterday to repair a torn UCL in his right thumb. He will not require surgery for a torn labrum in his right shoulder and will undergo an offseason rehabilitation program. He is expected to make a full recovery before training camp.

The Louisiana Tech baseball team will return to action tonight against Southern miss. Tech was picked to win Conference USA in the preseason, but they find themselves in fifth place in the league with 12 more conference games left. Coach Lane Burroughs says a lack of effort is not why this team has not performed to expectations…

All-Sothland second team forward Christian Shumate announced he will return to McNeese for his junior season. The cowboy’s leading scorer and rebounder was second the conference in boards and averaged 15 points and almost 10 rebounds a game. He helped lead McNeese to the conference tournament semifinals and broke a 33 year old record for most rebounds in the tournament.  First year head coach Will Wade says he’s excited to see what they can do together next season.

Lawmakers at the State Capitol are hoping to address the ever-growing problem of drug overdose deaths. Slidell Senator Sharon Hewitt’s Senate Bill 49 in essence doubles the current penalties for those who manufacture fentanyl in clandestine labs…:

A first offense would carry a 10-to-40-year prison sentence, ten years without parole, and up to a $50,000 fine. It passes the full Senate by a 33-2 vote, and moves now to the House.

Rapides Parish Sheriff Deputies have arrested two men in the death of an Alexandria man found in a ditch on LA Highway 1 North last week. Sheriff’s spokesman Tommy Carnline says they’ve arrested 32-year-old Donald Ray Sias, Jr. and Othey Lee Tatum, Sr. for the death of 42-year-old Rochaune Prenell. He says Tatum was also arrested for obstruction of justice and criminal conspiracy…:

Legislation to prohibit insurance carriers from using gender as a factor when setting auto insurance rates advances from Senate Insurance. Bill author Alexandria Senator Jay Luneau says women are often charged a higher premium than men even if they have an identical driving record…:

But Insurance Committee Chairman Senator Kirk Talbot opposes the legislation; saying it would cause insurance rates for male drivers to increase…:

Prolec GE Business Unit Director Sergio Fernandez says the additional jobs will add to the 282 they currently have

Both girls were ejected from the ATV. Carboni says neither girl was wearing a helmet, which is essential for minors…

Both females were transported to separate area hospitals. Unfortunately, 14-year-old Samia Rogers of Slidell succumbed to her injuries. Preliminary autopsy findings were consistent with blunt force trauma.

Spokesperson Tommy Carnline says authorities were able to close in on two individuals.

Authorities arrested 32-year-old Donald Ray Sias, Jr. and O-tha Lee Tatum, Sr. both of Alexandria. Sias was in jail for unrelated charges and rearrested for carjacking, second-degree murder, criminal conspiracy, and obstruction of justice. Tatum was also arrested for obstruction of justice and criminal conspiracy.

The only female on the committee Monroe Senator Katrina Jackson says it’s a very simple gender shouldn’t be used to determine whether or not she’s an at-risk driver, especially when insurance companies have access to one’s driving record.

Renters, a proposed House bill before the legislature would allow you to break your lease if you find you are in a high crime area. The bill would permit backing out of a lease if two or more criminal instances were reported within a half mile, within 6 months. It has yet to see a committee review.

Big upset in college baseball as the Nicholls Colonels defeated top ranked LSU six to five last night. Shortstop Parker Coddou finished off the game with a fantastic double play as he caught a pop up in shallow centerfield and then ran to second base to record the second out as LSU pinch runner Jack Merrifield was already at third base, thinking the ball would fall in for a hit. The St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating a crash that killed a teenager and injured another after crashing into a tree near Slidell. St. Tammany Parish Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Suzanne Carboni says when deputies arrived they found two minors at the scene.

Legislation to legalize recreational marijuana was snuffed out in House Criminal Justice before it could even be voted on Tuesday. Bill author, New Orleans Representative Candace Newell says fear-mongering is how cannabis was criminalized to begin with.

The committee voted to defer the bill, which basically removed the bill from consideration this session.

The 37th Annual Festival International De Louisiane begins today through Sunday in downtown Lafayette. Marketing Director Carly Viator (vee-ah-tore) Courville says this year’s opening ceremony will celebrate Lafayette’s bicentennial year.
