We’re almost at the height of carnival season and health officials offer some advice to protect revelers from COVID. Brooke Thorington explains.

The State House kills a bill to give Louisiana a second majority Black Supreme Court district and the measure’s sponsor is not happy about it. Baton Rouge Republican Representative Barry Ivey said the legislature is the laziest group of people he’s ever worked with in a speech after the vote in favor of tabling the bill.

On his monthly radio show, Governor John Bel Edwards once again denied he was involved in an alleged cover up of the death of Ronald Greene in 2019. The AP has suggested Mr. Edwards knew the circumstances surrounding Greene’s death, but wanted it kept quiet during the re-election campaign. The Governor says that’s a lie…:

Big news out of Ascension Parish as a major California-based manufacturer has committed to investing a $750 million biomass facility there. John Bissell, Co-CEO of Origin Materials says the state’s workforce was a major factor in choosing Louisiana:

The Coast Guard is searching for a woman who reportedly went overboard a Carnival cruise ship in the Gulf of Mexico, about 150 miles offshore SouthWest Pass, Louisiana. The USCG has not said how the 32-year-old woman ended up in the water, but reports from passengers on social media say there was a disturbance that caused security to detain her with handcuffs when she jumped off the deck hitting the side of the ship before hitting the water. The ship was set to dock in New Orleans this morning.

Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to head to Louisiana over the next couple weeks in the state’s first massive Mardi Gras celebration in almost 2 years. State Health Officer Dr. Joe Kanter is optimistic this Carnival won’t be a super spreader event like it was in 2020…:

Just days after Saints running back Alvin Kamara was arrested for felony battery, two other men have been charged in connection with the beating of a man in Las Vegas over Pro Bowl Weekend. Report indicate another arrest warrant has been issued — this one for Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Chris Lammons. The felony battery charges against Kamara could mean one to five years in prison if convicted.

The LSU men’s basketball team rolled over the Georgia Bulldogs last night in the PMAC on Dale Brown Court 84-65 for the Tigers third straight win. LSU had a trio of players in double figures led by Tari Eason who finished with 21 points, Brandon Murray had 15 points and Darius Days also added 15. The Tigers travel to face the Gamecocks Saturday.

The NFL Network is reporting Coach Dennis Allen is keeping Pete Carmichael as offensive coordinator on the new Saints head coach staff. Carmichael has been with the Saints since 2006 and OC since 2009.

Former LSU Tiger Cam Thomas went off last night for the Nets in Brooklyn’s 111-106 victory over the New York Knicks. The rookie led Brooklyn back from a 28-point deficit with 16 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter.

Ragin’ Cajuns men’s basketball coach Bob Marlin is under heavy fire. The Cajuns have lost three games in a row and eight times in their last 10, sitting in ninth place in the Sun Belt standings. Marlin still believes his team has time to turn things around.

UL-Lafayette hasn’t been to the NCAA tournament since 2015. The Cajuns are at ULM today.

LSU Baseball has picked Blake Money to pitch opening day Friday. Coach Jay Johnson made the announcement yesterday ahead of the three game set versus the university of Maine this weekend.

Two men alleged to be involved in the incident that resulted in Saints running back Alvin Kamara being arrested in Las Vegas have been booked, and police are looking for a third man thought to be Kansas City Chiefs player Chris Lammons. The felony battery charges against Kamara could mean one to five years in prison if convicted.

The LSU baseball season starts Friday, and the preseason honors keep rolling in. Three Tigers, first baseman Tre Morgan, infielder Jacob Berry, and outfielder Dylan Crews were named to the preseason Golden Spikes Award watch list. The college baseball equivalent of the Heisman Trophy, the award goes to the best player each season. Berry was a 2021 nominee as a freshman at Arizona, Crews was last season’s Perfect Game Freshman of the Year, and Morgan finished fourth in the SEC in batting.

The Tigers host Maine at The Box for their three-game opening series.

After a 26-26 finish last season, ULM baseball coach Mike Federico has higher expectations for the WarHawks this season. Though they were picked to finish ninth in the Sun Belt Conference preseason poll, UL-M is led by returnees Grant Schultz, Trace Henry, and Travis Washburn. Federico believes his team has enough experience to make a jump in the standings.

Home Bank has donated $1 million to Ragin’ Cajun athletics to help with the renovations of Cajun Field and secure the naming rights to the university’s soccer and track facility. Some of the funds will also go to the Ragin’ Cajuns Athletic Fund. UL alum and Home Bank president and CEO John Bordelon is co-founder of the RCAF. The donation is part of a $500 million fundraising effort by the university to renovate all of its athletic facilities.

The Louisiana Supreme Court says it will consider whether the state’s ban on non-unanimous jury verdicts should apply retroactively. The U-S Supreme Court has already refused to make the split jury ban law retroactive, but Loyola University Law Professor Dane Ciolino says the state Supreme Court can issue its own ruling…:

Louisiana allowed split jury verdicts of 10-to-2 and 11-to-1 for 120 years. That ended in 2019 with a voter-approved Constitutional Amendment.

Third Judicial District Attorney John Belton plans to pursue criminal charges against those involved in the 2019 fatal arrest of Ronald Greene, but he’s waiting for the U-S Justice Department to complete its investigation. Belton says while the federal investigation has taken time, it has produced results…:

Mr. Edwards did re-emphasize the recommendations for people to wear masks, particularly around large crowds. It’s something to keep in mind as Mardi Gras and festival season approaches…:

The Governor’s current order is set to expire one month from today, though Edwards has said he may end it before then if positive trends continue.

Deputies in Tangipahoa Parish are seeking a man wanted for an alleged sexual relationship with a minor. 49-year-old Mario Funez is wanted for indecent behavior with a juvenile, sexual battery, carnal knowledge of a juvenile and contributing to the delinquency of a juvenile. His victim is just 13.

A couple years ago, voters amended the state Constitution to get rid of non-unanimous jury verdicts. Now the state Supreme Court will consider whether or not all those convictions will have to be re-tried. Jeff Palermo has more..:

The head of St. Helena parish’s governing body is arrested for bribery and malfeasance. The Attorney General’s office says Police Jury President Frank Johnson was charged Monday. He’s accused of soliciting a bribe in exchange for influencing an emergency disaster relief contract for Hurricane Ida. He has posted bond and been released.

 

The state issues revised COVID guidance for K-12 schools to keep disruptions to a minimum. State Epidemiologist Dr. Teresa Sokol says if you are fully vaccinated or recovered from COVID in the last 90 days, you are exempt from having to quarantine after being exposed. But…:

LDH is offering three options for K-12 schools and daycares because full adherence to CDC guidelines presents operational challenges.

Governor John Bel Edwards has extended Louisiana’s COVID public health emergency order until a month from today, but without any mask or attendance mandates. Mr. Edwards says he may end the emergency before then IF down-trending virus numbers continue…:

Deputies in Jefferson Parish shot and killed a man during an encounter in Marrero Wednesday. Sheriff Joe Lopinto says his officers responded to a 9-1-1 call and found the man sitting in his vehicle. He refused to exit the car. As they stood in front of the vehicle, he cranked it up and – worried he was about to try to hit them – they opened fire. The matter is under investigation.

Sokol says the second option is the “test to stay” which requires those who are unvaccinated to be tested for COVID twice a day for five days after exposure.

The third option is what Sokol refers to as universal masking. It requires no contact tracing or quarantine after exposure regardless of vaccination status.

Greene died following a multi-parish police chase that ended with State Troopers beating and tasing Greene in what State Police called a violent struggle. Belton expects the federal D-O-J will complete its investigation soon…

Governor Edwards did re-emphasize the recommendations for people to wear masks, particularly around large crowds. It’s something to keep in mind as Mardi Gras and festival season approach.

The governor cited the downturn in COVID infections and hospitalizations as reasons for removing the mitigation measures but says that vaccinations and boosters remain the best defense from contracting or experiencing severe symptoms and encourages anyone who has yet to receive the vaccine to do so.

The Governor’s current order is set to expire one month from today, though Edwards has said he may end it before then if positive trends continue. Before he does, he is working with his cabinet and other agencies to make sure that any changes do not impede the state’s response to COVID.

35-year old Wendell Sanchez of Gonzales was sentenced to 35 years in state prison after he pleaded guilty to twice raping an 11-year-old girl whom authorities said became pregnant with his child. Prosecutors say it allowed Sanchez to avoid two potential life sentences and also avoided putting the victim on the stand.
