Sean Payton is no longer the head coach of the Saints. It’s hard to hear that after 15 seasons that saw the Black and Gold become a consistent winner in the NFL under Payton, who arrived in New Orleans a few months after Hurricane Katrina. Payton led the Saints to their only Super Bowl championship in the 2009 season, but he’ll never forget that 2006 team that came out of nowhere and went to the NFC Championship game…

It’s unknown what the 58-year-old Payton will do next. Payton says he would like to return to coaching one day, but getting a job as an analyst with a major TV network is a possibility.

So the search begins for a new head coach…NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport says defensive coordinator Dennis Allen will get a long look. He’s been Payton’s D-C since 2015 after three unsuccessful seasons as head coach of the Raiders.

Tiger Rag Magazine reports Sharon Lewis, a central figure in LSU’s Title Nine scandal, is no longer employed by LSU. Lewis sued the university in April for 50 million dollars claiming the school retaliated against her and created a hostile work environment after reporting sexual misconduct cases. LSU is not commenting, but Lewis’ attorneys call her firing a wrongful termination.

Tiger Rag Magazine reports Sharon Lewis, LSU’s associate athletic director of football recruiting and alumni relations, is no longer employed at LSU. She filed a 50-million dollar lawsuit against the university in April alleging a hostile work environment and claiming co-workers retaliated against her after reporting that female student workers were sexually harassed by former LSU coach Les Miles. Lewis attorneys call the firing a wrongful termination, while LSU is not commenting.

There are some state lawmakers who question the governor’s proposal to use 500-million in surplus dollars on a new I-10 Mississippi River Bridge in Baton Rouge. That’s because construction is several years away and engineers have yet to map out where the bridge will go. Baton Rouge Representative Rick Edmonds says getting that bridge built should be a top priority, even if the money lies in reserve for a few years:

Governor Edwards proposes setting aside a half-billion in surplus money to build a new Mississippi River Bridge at Baton Rouge. Kevin Gallagher reports state lawmakers hashed it out Tuesday…:

Governor John Bel Edwards has announced his plan to apply more than half a billion dollars from the budget to help replenish the state’s Unemployment Insurance Trust Fund. Louisiana Workforce Commission Secretary Ava Cates says the fund plays a vital role in protecting workers and businesses.

Since 2020, the trust fund has been depleted due to the pandemic and four major natural disasters. Cates says the one-time funds would push the fund above the $750 million threshold that would otherwise negatively impact business taxes and unemployment benefits.

Cates says that by addressing this issue right now, the state has an added layer of protection should disaster strike again.

The awareness campaign will launch in April during the NCAA final four basketball tournament in New Orleans. Edwards says large sporting events are often the perfect environment for the crime of trafficking to flourish.

Dr. Dana Hunter, executive director of the Louisiana Office of Human Trafficking Prevention also introduced the first web-based human trafficking prevention resource center at HumanTrafficking.la.gov.

Edwards says that 60-percent of children in foster care have some type of connection to human sex trafficking.

Sean Payton officially stepped down as head coach of the New Orleans Saints Tuesday afternoon after 16 years on the sidelines. The decision of whether or not to move on is something Payton says he had been contemplating for a while.

Payton brought an unprecedented era of winning to the Saints, collecting seven division championships, nine playoff appearances and the Super Bowl 44 trophy. But Payton’s very first team in New Orleans remains special to him.

State lawmakers on the Joint Budget Committee met Tuesday to discuss Governor Edwards’ proposal for spending surplus dollars on a new Mississippi River Bridge at Baton Rouge. Part of the governor’s plan is to set aside a half-billion dollars for the project, but committee Chairman Senator Bodi White, of Baton Rouge, feels pressure will be on to spend that money on more immediate needs…:

Senate President Page Cortez, of Lafayette, says he’s all for getting a third bridge built in Baton Rouge … but he also wonders if stowing those millions away for several years is the right move, when a location for the bridge has not even been decided yet…:

Baton Rouge state Representative Rick Edmonds says he supports the plan, even if the surplus money lies in reserve for it for a few years. He says getting that bridge built should be a top priority…:

Lawmakers will decide how to allocate surplus funds in the budget for the fiscal year that starts July 1st. The Governor has line-item veto power over that budget bill.

Her attorneys released a statement alleging Lewis was fired by LSU athletic director Scott Woodward.

The Saints’ all-time winningest coach is stepping down. Sean Payton notified the team today that he will not be back for a 16th season on the sidelines.

Lewis’ attorneys released a statement to Tiger Rag through Delta Media confirming that she had been fired as the school’s associate athletic director of football recruiting and alumni relations by AD Scott Woodward. Lewis’ legal team said in the statement that they believe the termination to be an act of retaliation for the reporting of violations within the athletic department.

In a press conference, Payton said he won’t rule out eventually returning to coaching someday.

State Police say a man shot & killed by Lafayette cops Sunday night was goi9ng for his gun, and so the shooting appears to be justified. Trooper Tom Gossen says the suspect stole a car, and at some point tried to flee officers on foot. That’s when they saw he had a gun and was reaching for it…:

The shooting remains under investigation, but preliminary findings show it to a clean shoot.

 

With the rise in COVID Omicron cases, AARP Louisiana calls for immediate action to get elderly people at nursing homes – and staff – vaxxed and boosted. State director Denise Bottcher says there were over 100 confirmed COVID cases among staff in the first two weeks of January and over 50 residents tested positive…:

She says only about 12-percent of staff have had a booster.

We’re getting some reaction to Governor Edwards’ proposal to use surplus money to give all public school teachers a $1500 pay raise. Some are calling it a slap in the face of teachers who are underappreciated and seriously underpaid. Others say $1500 is a good start, but it needs to be more. Teachers in Louisiana are paid an average of $51,500 per year, which is 12th among 16 Southern states. The national average teacher salary is over $64-thousand.

State Police say the man who was shot & killed by a Lafayette Police Officer Sunday night reached for a gun. Trooper Thomas Gossen says Lafayette PD tried to apprehend the man after he allegedly stole a vehicle. Gossen says during the foot chase one of the officers attempted to use a taser…:

The investigation is still underway, but at least now they know the officer was justified in firing his weapon.

According to a Restaurant Association Survey 98-percent of eateries that did not receive an RRF grant but applied, say future funding would enable them to retain and rehire employees.

He says one of the officers attempted to use a taser…

After 15 seasons with the New Orleans Saints, head coach Sean Payton is leaving the franchise he helped build into one of the most successful in the NFL. Editor in Chief of Canal Street Chronicles, Ross Jackson, says it appears Payton’s decision is about taking a break from the NFL coaching grind and the speculation has been out there…

With New Orleans, Payton won 152 games, seven division titles, and led the Saints to a victory in Super Bowl 44. Like Drew Brees, Payton doesn’t get a storybook ending to his career, where he walks off into the sunset with a championship, but Jackson reminds fans that Payton’s legacy with the Saints and the NFL will be a lasting one.

A Baton Rouge man who barricaded himself inside his burning home Sunday night, and fired shots at police and firemen as they tried to respond, was killed by a self –inflicted gunshot; not by burning or smoke. A coroner’s report on the remains of 41-year-old Kendrick Holland were conclusive. Holland’s reason for his actions are unknown.

There are reports that Saints head coach Sean Payton is leaving the black and gold after 16 seasons. It’s not yet clear if Payton is leaving just the Saints or coaching for good. The franchise is expected to call a press conference this afternoon Payton reportedly will not be in attendance. Rod Walker, who covers the Saints for NOLA.com says this instantly becomes one of the most attractive jobs in the NFL.

58 year old Payton  is under contract through 2024, so a trade would have to be worked out for him to coach another team. There have also been reports of TV networks showing interest in Payton if he retries.
