Louisiana’s Shot for $100 program is continuing through the end of December with more than 34-thousand 100-dollar debit cards distributed so far to those receiving their initial COVID-19 vaccination. Sheree Taillon heads up the program and says college students are rolling up their sleeves in fear of classes being canceled if they don’t.

The new Omicron variant of COVID is also expected to increase the response to the Shot for $100 program.

Taillon says the Louisiana Department of Health has partnered with an independent pharmacy group to expand the Shot for 100 program in harder-to-reach areas.

College students will be eligible for the Shot for $100 program and one debit card whether it’s their first or second shot.

Cut 5 (08) “…for one card.”

The deadline for college students is still December 10th, not through the rest of the month as it is for the general public.

With oil prices dropping of late, Louisiana drivers and others nationwide are hoping that’ll mean a drop in gasoline prices, sooner rather than later. Triple A’s Nick Chabarria says it usually takes a while for the transition to lower prices to show up at the pump.

The statewide average price of regular stands at three-10 a gallon in Louisiana, down two cents from a week ago. The barrel price of oil has dropped almost 15-dollars from a week ago.

Chabarria says despite the price drop for a barrel of crude, he says it’s a little difficult to tell how much savings you’ll realize and when you gas up your vehicle.

Chabarria is optimistic that gas prices will continue slowly dropping as the price of oil declines.

A Legislative Budget Committee has approved the spending of 23-million dollars in federal money that will be used to modernize very old water and sewerage systems in small towns and rural parishes. House Appropriations Chair Jerome Zeringue says this round of money will fund 29 projects, but there’s more work to be done…

Zeringue says they currently have about 300-million dollars to spend on improving water and sewerage systems that are about 100 years old.  He says they plan to approve more projects for funding early next year…

Cut 10 (11)  “…that’s available”

Local governments must apply for the funding and they need to show a need for upgrading their water systems. Zeringue says the dollars to pay for these projects is the result of the American Rescue Plan Act of 2021…

Thanksgiving Weekend state police responded to 15 fatal crashes. Troop C’s area alone in southeast Louisiana, last month there were 13 deaths from fatal crashes. So, they are working with several agencies like Lafourche Parish Sheriff Craig Webre in hopes of curbing impaired driving.

Webre, along with other law enforcement officers, says they can’t do it alone, they need the public to contact them when they see an impaired driver behind the wheel.

Troopers say more than half of fatal crashes involve impaired drivers and distracted driving from things like cell phones is responsible for a growing number also.

Troop C Commander Lanny Bergeron says you’ll see an increased presence of law enforcement in the area in hopes of reducing the recent increase of fatal crashes.

Webre says the pandemic along with residents coping with the difficulties from Hurricane Ida have resulted in many turning to alcohol and drugs to manage their stress. They also want to find ways to help individuals with addiction.

Louisiana’s “Shot for 100” program, which pays you a hundred bucks for getting your COVID shot, will continue for a third month. Started in October, the program offers a pre-loaded $100 VISA or Mastercard if one gets the jab at certain state-sponsored locations. Program boss Sheree Taillon says college students can get the cash, even if they’ve had one shot already, but they only have until the 10th of this month…:

Cops in Monroe have a message for motorists: “lock up your car.” Vehicle burglaries have sharply increased in the area, so they remind you to always lock up, never leave anything of value in plain sight inside the car, and be aware of any on-foot activity when leaving your car in a parking lot.

Now, here’s one Falcon that will be welcome in New Orleans. Film and TV star Anthony Mackie, also known as The Falcon in Disney-Marvel movies, will get a warm welcome when he appears next month at the FAN EXPO; January 7th rhough the 9th at the Morial Convention Center. The Saints will be short-handed once again tonight when they host the Dallas Cowboys. New Orleans is trying to snap a four-game losing streak, but running back Alvin Kamara will reportedly miss his fourth straight game and offensive tackles Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramcyyk are also not expected to play.

Taysom Hill is expected to start at quarterback. Hill, who has been battling a partial plantar fascia tear in his foot, says he’s excited for another chance to be the starting quarterback….

It appears none of Kelly’s assistants at Notre Dame will join him at LSU. Irish Offensive Coordinator Tommy Rees has announced he’s staying at N-D and defensive coordinator Marcus Freeman is reportedly in line to become of the next head coach of the Irish.

The Southland announces Chris Grant will take over as the league’s commissioner in the spring taking over for Tom Burnett who will be a full-time consultant to the commissioner. Grant takes over at a time when the Southland has lost several schools to other leagues.

And the Pelicans say Zion Williamson is experiencing minor soreness in his surgically-repaired fractured foot. The team is calling it a minor setback.

Oil is down nearly $15 a barrel since last week. The statewide average price for regular gas is $3.10; down two cents from a week ago.

Fans of Buffalo Bills cornerback Tre’Davious White chipped in to show their appreciation for the football player in a big way after he was injured Thanksgiving Day in the Saints game. The Bills Mafia raised more than $100 thousand to stop hunger in his hometown of Shreveport. White had already donated 1000 turkeys in Shreveport and the Mafia followed his lead.

Another LNG facility is coming to Cameron Parish in southwest Louisiana. Governor John Bel Edwards joined with Venture Global LNG CEO today to announce the company will invest more than ten billion dollars in a new liquefied natural gas facility.  The project will mean 200 new jobs. The new LNG facility will employ carbon capture and sequestration technology to reduce carbon dioxide emissions. Named CP2, the new plant will have a capacity of 20 million metric tons per annum of LNG.

St. Tammany Parish President Mike Cooper says it’s a bogus rumor that a second casino will be built in the parish if voters approve a proposition allowing a casino to be built in Slidell. Cooper is asking all registered voters to vote on December 11th

Early voting continues through Saturday.

The US Supreme Court heard two hours of oral arguments Wednesday on Mississippi’s 15-week abortion ban, if upheld it could lead to the high court overturning Roe v. Wade, which then would ban nearly all abortions in Louisiana. Ben Clapper, Executive Director of Louisiana Right to Life is hopeful abortion rights will be overturned.

Michelle Erenberg, (Erin-berg) President of Lift Louisiana, a women’s advocacy group that also defends the right to abortion says, attorneys on behalf of the abortion clinic in Mississippi did an excellent job covering issues of the case.

The court’s decision is expected in June.

Louisiana’s attorney general is cautiously optimistic that the Biden administration will fall flat in all of its vaccine mandate attempts targeting healthcare facilities and businesses employing more than 100 people.

Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff’s Office says 60-year-old Cedric West of Minden was killed Wednesday when the dump truck he was driving collided into the path of a Northbound Amtrak train just south of Amite.

Complaints are mounting against insurance companies following Hurricane Ida. American Policyholder Association, Executive Director Doug Quinn believes the state while doing a good job in its oversight of the insurance industry, something is missing from the mix.

Quinn says several insurance companies are delaying payment and dragging out the claims process.

St. Tammany Parish councilman Mike Lorino says the proposition on the December 11th ballot for a casino in Slidell would result in just one casino in the parish and any claims it would result in multiple casinos are not true.

The Gaming Control Board approved moving the license of a Bossier City casino to Slidell, but the St. Tammany Parish Council agreed to let voters decide if the $325-million project could move forward.

The Saints will be without three starters on offense when they host the Cowboys tonight at the Superdome. Running back Alvin Kamara will reportedly miss his fourth straight game with a knee injury. Starting tackles Terron Armstead and Ryan Ramcyzk are also reportedly out for tonight’s contest. That means James Hurst and former Louisiana Tech standout Jordan Mills will likely start at the two tackle positions. Kick-off is at 7:20.

LSU men’s basketball improved to 8-0 last night as the Tigers topped Ohio 66-51 in front of 11-thousand fans. Coach Will Wade was not happy with his team’s 17 turnovers and the 12 offensive rebounds that the Bobcats collected.

Louisiana Tech defeated Texas Southern 87-60 last night. It’s the fifth straight game the Bulldogs have scored 80 or more points. David Green led Tech with 19 points. Kenneth Lofton and Amorie Archibald each added 15 points.

Dallas shot a franchise-record 69-percent from the field as the Mavericks defeated the Pelicans 139-107. Brandon Ingram had 29 points in a losing effort.

Louisiana Attorney General Jeff Landry is taking a victory lap after federal Judge Terry Doughty granted his request for a preliminary injunction blocking a Biden administration vaccine mandate targeting healthcare facilities. Landry says he’s optimistic about an appeal of the ruling.
