State health officials are reporting the first probable case of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 in Louisiana. The Department of Health says it involves an individual in the greater New Orleans area who recently traveled within the United States. The Omicron variant has now been detected in nine states and 30 countries. State Health Officer, Dr. Joe Kanter, says news of Omicron in Louisiana is cause for concern, but not panic.

Regardless of variants, Governor Edwards says the best protection is to be fully vaccinated, which includes children five and older and when applicable a booster shot for individuals 18 and older.

Over the past 30 days, Louisiana State troopers say they’ve seized more than six million dollars in illegal narcotics during numerous traffic stops across the state. Trooper William Huggins says on Wednesday a traffic stop in St. Tammany Parish led to the discovery of a large quantity of suspected meth.

The street value of the haul is estimated at more than two million dollars. A Texas man was arrested on drug-related charges.

Governor John Bel Edwards addresses the Omicron variant and so far, the variant has not been found in Louisiana. Edwards explained that the Department of Health has established a network of laboratories and they are proactively sequencing positive PCR tests.

Deputies in Ascension Parish say a man found shot to death inside a pickup on I-10 late Thursday night was the victim of a dispute that started miles away. The bullet-riddled vehicle was stopped in the roadway near the Highway 73 exit; blocking all three lanes. The driver was alive, the passenger dead at the scene. An investigation is ongoing.

Saints Quarterback Taysom Hill threw four interceptions in last night’s 27-17 loss to Dallas. Hill injured the middle finger on his throwing hand in the first half and today NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports Hill may need surgery to repair that injured finger. New Orleans next game is December 12th against the New York Jets.

Public Service Commissioner Foster Campbell thinks it’s crazy to pay a football coach ten million dollars a year. While most of Brian Kelly’s compensation comes from private funding, Campbell believes investing over $100 million in a ten-year coaching contract sends a poor message about LSU…:

Concerns are growing in the state about the possibility of Chronic Wasting Disease infecting white-tailed deer in Louisiana.  This after CWD was found in one of the animals in Union County, Arkansas.

That’s State Veterinarian Jim LaCour with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries who says the agency has issued a ban on baiting and feeding in nearby Moorehouse and Union parishes beginning December 6.  CWD is a neurodegenerative disease of white-tailed deer that can prove fatal to the deer and other animals.

LaCour says not feeding the deer is a precautionary step targeted at halting the spread of Chronic Wasting Disease.

LaCour is urging hunters to submit the white-tailed deer they’ve harvested so they can be tested for CWD.

Huggins says the makeup of the drug seizures during the traffic stops were large quantities of meth.

Shriners Hospital for Children in Shreveport has fired at least seven employees for not getting the COVID-19 jab. A spokesman says that’s fewer than 5-percent of the facility’s workforce.

Cops in New Orleans are investigating a spate of vehicle burglaries of cars parked while fans watched the Saints play the Cowboys. Security video shows the thieves smashing glass to get into the cars.

In Livingston Parish jury deliberations are underway in the trial of 42-year-old Melanie Curtain, the woman accused of raping and videotaping a drugged woman during a 2014 assault, allegedly directed by former Livingston Parish sheriff’s deputy Dennis Perkins. Perkins was arrested two years ago along with his now ex-wife Cynthia Perkins and will be tried next year for a combined 150 counts alleging they raped two children, an adult and produced child pornography

New Orleans doesn’t play again until December 12th when they visit the New York Jets. They could use the extra days to get healthy, Alvin Kamara, Terron Armstead, Ryan Ramczyk and Marcus Davenport did not play last night because of injuries and they’ve all missed multiple games. Hill also injured his finger in last night’s game and it appeared to impact his passing.
