Inflation is making it more difficult to get highway construction projects started. State Transportation Secretary Shawn Wilson says two projects recently had to be rejected because the bids to perform the construction work were nearly 50-percent above the estimate. The primary factors are the cost of labor and raw materials.

2021 was a difficult year for State Police as more details came out about the 2019 death of Ronald Greene, a black man who died after he was tased and beaten by several white state troopers. The incident is under federal investigation. Governor John Bel Edwards understands the family is seeking justice and State Police has made policy changes to prevent another tragic incident like this…

It’s been a difficult year for State Police as the state agency is under scrutiny for several use of force incidents over the last few years, one of which led to a death in Union Parish in 2019. Governor John Bel Edwards says he’s confident that Superintendent Colonel Lamar Davis, who was appointed in October 2020, is leading the agency in the right direction.

Briggs says the additional funding is long overdue.

TANF provides money to help families meet basic needs, like food, shelter and clothing. It also provides cash assistance for persons who are in the process of learning a marketable job skill, and offers help to grandparents who find themselves raising their children’s children…:

Briggs says the TANF benefit increases take effect with the beginning of the New Year and should make a tangible difference for the recipient…:

A special Senate committee has held hearings this month on State Police policies regarding use of force. Edwards says he’s confident the panel will handle issues accordingly and that while most officers are a credit to their profession there are some that should not wear the badge.

At the first two meetings, Edwards understands there are some topics where discussion is limited due to ongoing investigations of the agency for example the Ronald Greene case.

At last Monday’s meeting, Mona Hardin, the mother of Ronald Greene addressed members of the oversight. committee. Greene after May he was beaten and tased during an encounter with several white State Troopers in 2019.

The Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year’s Day will for the first time in its 133-year history feature a Louisiana float. Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser says Louisiana will be the only state to have a float in the iconic parade and the Louisiana Tourism Float will feature a music ambassador from the Bayou State :

The float will include representatives who have assisted during the COVID and hurricane crises and will be decorated to depict the spirit of the Bayou State, including moss-covered trees, powdered covered beignets and crawfish.

Nungesser says riders of the float will also include teachers, first responders, utility workers, healthcare professionals, and volunteers who gave so unselfishly to help others during the pandemic and the recent storms.

Nungesser says the float will be decorated in true Louisiana style.

The 350-thousand-dollar float will be decorated with 34-thousand roses and handmade magnolias. They budgeted 200-thousand-dollars for travel and entertainment expenses.

It’s been over two weeks since the first Omicron case of COVID-19 was detected in Louisiana and since then the state health department has identified over 100 cases in the Bayou State. Ochsner Health Infectious disease specialist Dr. Katherine Baumgarten says the seriousness of the variant remains in question at this point.

The state health department reported 31 additional Omicron variant cases Friday and none of the new cases required hospitalization.

Baumgarten says if you’ve previously tested positive for COVID, but still not vaccinated, you are at risk to re-infection with the Omicron variant circulating…

She says they are waiting for final word from the CDC that the probable cases are confirmed or not.

Dr. Baumgarten says symptoms of Omicron have so far mirrored those of the previous variants, including Delta.

The body of Ouachita Parish coach and educator Scott Stone was recovered Friday morning in Union Parish after a boating accident.

The state Supreme Court has suspended without pay Lafayette City Court judge Michelle Odinet for a video taken inside her home where racial slurs can be heard on the video. Legal analyst and attorney Franz Borghardt says it remains to be seen if Odinet will ever serve as a judge again…:

Saints Head Coach Sean Payton will miss Sunday’s game against the defending NFL champion Tampa Bay Bucs, after testing positive for COVID. Defensive Coordinator Dennis Allen will fill Payton’s shoes. Allen says so far Payton is the only coach on the staff to test positive, but they’ll make more changes if needed..:

LSU Quarterback Myles Brennan says he will not play in the Texas Bowl on January fourth. Brennan told a Baton Rouge radio station that he hasn’t practiced since last April and would like a fresh start with the new coaching staff. Brennan missed the 2021 season with a broken non-throwing arm.

The Pelicans beat the Milwaukee Bucks last night 116 to 112.

There are two college bowl games in Louisiana today. In the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl, U-A-B will face 13th ranked BYU. The Cougars are led by Tyler Allgeier who has rushed for 14-hundred yards and 20 touchdowns.

The Saints have won four straight NFC South titles, but on Sunday Tampa Bay can clinch an NFC South title with a win over New Orleans. Quarterback Tom Brady leads the NFL in completions, attempts, yards and touchdowns with 36. But Safety Malcom Jenkins says they can’t just focus on Brady and his dangerous receiving targets. Jenkins says running back Leonard Fournette was a big reason why Tampa Bay won last year’s playoff game…

Fournette has 778 yards and eight rushing touchdowns. Tampa Bay is an 11-point favorite.

LSU needs help on the offensive line for next season and they apparently got a good one out of the transfer portal. FIU offensive tackle Miled Frazier has committed to the Tigers. He’s rated as the number two offensive tackle available in the transfer portal, according to 24-7 sports. Ohio State and Florida State also wanted Frazier.
The college football bowl season kicks-off today and tomorrow there are two games in Louisiana. At 2:30 in Shreveport it’s the Radiance Technologies Independence Bowl between 13th ranked BYU and U-A-B. Rain is in the forecast and this is the first meeting between these two schools.

Then on Saturday night in the Superdome, the 16th ranked Ragin Cajuns will face Marshall. U-L Lafayette has ruled out five starters in this game, including running back Chris Smith and defensive tackle Tayland Humphrey.

The 19th ranked LSU men’s basketball team looks to stay undefeated when they face Louisiana Tech in Bossier City on Saturday night. The Tigers lead the nation in scoring defense, allowing 53 points a game.

Also tomorrow, ULM hosts Southern Miss at 2 PM. The Warhawks are 4-and-0 at home this year. Nicholls also looks to stay undefeated at home as the Colonels host Mississippi Valley State. McNeese takes on Dallas Christian at Burton Coliseum.
