LSU baseball has made it official, as they announced Arizona Coach Jay Johnson as the new head coach of the Fighting Tigers baseball program. The 44-year-old led Arizona to the College World Series twice in six seasons in Tuscon.  Aaron Fitt from D-1 baseball-dot-com says one of Johnson’s biggest challenges will be dealing with a passionate fan base who expects a trip to the College World Series every year.

When he was an assistant coach at San Diego, the Toreros went to the NCAA Tournament six times in eight years. In his first head coaching job at Nevada, The Wolfpack won the Mountain West title in his second season. In his first season at Arizona, the Wildcats finished as national runner-ups to Coastal Carolina.

The Saints have released a statement in response to a report that fans will be required to wear masks at football games in the Dome this season. The NFL franchise says as the vaccination rate continues to improve, they expect masks will not be a requirement once the season begins. The Saints also says 100-percent of the coaches and football operations staff are fully vaccinated. And they ranked third among NFL teams in the player vaccination rate.

The Louisiana Sports Hall of Fame Class of 2020 will finally get inducted into the Hall on Saturday night during a big ceremony in Natchitoches. The eleven-member class has been waiting for over a year to be inducted. Hall of Fame chairman Doug Ireland says the inductees have been patient and understanding.

LSU’s Adam Miller and Louisiana Tech’s Kenneth Lofton Jr. have made the USA’s Under 19 World Cup team.  Miller and Lofton join the 12 man team after solid collegiate seasons.  Miller averaged 8.3 points per game at Illinois last season while starting all 31 games.  Lofton averaged over 12 points per game for the Bulldogs as a freshman to go along with 7.5 rebounds.  Lofton is the first The player to ever earn a spot on the World Cup team.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission has launched the “Back to Work Louisiana” campaign, an effort aimed at putting people back to work as federally boosted unemployment benefits expire. LWC spokesperson Chris Fiore says the employment drive will culminate with a statewide in-person job fair on August 4th.

Local historians have located the gravesite of Louisiana’s 13th Governor Joseph Walker. Amateur historian Michael Wynne says Walker was buried in 1856 in Rapides Parish, but the land was later cultivated, and the cemetery destroyed. Wynne says Walker was a significant governor.

The lineup for this year’s fall Jazz Fest includes Foo Fighters, Stevie Nicks, Jimmy Buffet and Lizzo, Jazz Fest Producer Quint Davis says the lineup is awful similar to the one we were supposed to have in April of 2020. Davis says those artists were itching to get back to New Orleans.

It will run for six days, Friday through Sunday the second and third weekends in October.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission is launching a statewide campaign to get people back to work. Spokesperson Chris Fiore says their statewide ad campaign is aimed at letting residents know that the L-W-C is not just for dispersing unemployment but helping individuals get a job…

What had been a mystery for 60 years is now solved after local historians located the gravesite of Louisiana’s 13th Governor Joseph Walker. Amateur historian Michael Wynne says Walker was buried in 1856 at his family’s graveyard located on his property in Rapides Parish.

Jay Johnson has officially been named the new LSU Baseball coach, replacing the retiring Paul Mainieri. Johnson is the reigning Pac-12 Baseball Coach of the Year and took Arizona to the 2021 College World Series. Johnson will be formally introduced at a Monday afternoon press conference at Alex Box Stadium. The California native will be the 26th head coach for the Tigers.

State Police have arrested an FBI agent on multiple sex charges involving juveniles. Authorities say the incidents date back to 2016 and occurred in Ascension, East Baton Rouge, and Orleans parishes. 51-year-old David Harris of Prairieville was arrested in Ascension Parish.

The gravesite of Louisiana’s 13th governor, Joseph Walker, has been found in Alexandria after it went missing for 60 years. Walker died in 1856 and was buried in a family graveyard in Rapides Parish. But in 1864 the homesite burned to the ground and the land later changed hands and the cemetery destroyed. Historian Michael Wynne says it wasn’t until he found aerial photographs of Rapides Parish in 1955 that helped guide him to the gravesite.

The fall Jazz Fest lineup is in and Foo Fighters, Dead and Company, Stevie Nicks, Jimmy Buffet, Lizzo, and other stars are all scheduled to headline the festival’s return after a year and a half off.

Jazz Fest Producer Quint Davis says hotel rooms are already starting to fill up and folks are excited to head to the Fairgrounds October 8th through 17th

Governor Edwards agreed to cut off the 300 dollar federally boosted unemployment benefits five weeks early in exchange for a small bump in weekly state benefits starting next year.

Fiore says there are tens of thousands of good-paying jobs available in Louisiana right now and they want to connect you to employers who are eager to start a post-vaccine hiring spree.

House Speaker Clay Schexnayder would like to see lawmakers override the governor’s veto of a bill prohibiting transgender athletes from competing on female sports teams. Governor Edwards says the legislation is in search of a problem that does not exist. Schexnayder disagrees…

It’s been 40 years since a high rise was constructed in downtown Lafayette, but a now a local developer wants to build the tallest ever in Acadiana. LSU beat reporter Glen Guilbeau for the USA Today Network reports the search for a new Tigers baseball coach is down to three candidates, Arizona’s Jay Johnson, East Carolina’s Cliff Godwin, and Notre Dame’s Link Jarrett. Guilbeau says Athletic Director Scott Woodward might hold out for a bigger name.
