Restaurants, gyms, salons, casinos, malls and other nonessential businesses must reduce their occupancy rate to 50-percent. Louisiana is taking a step back and moving to a modified Phase Two through the end of the year, which means most bars will have to close and most businesses will have to reduce maximum capacity from 75 to 50-percent. The new restrictions go into effect today.

And with hospitalizations and coronavirus cases on the rise, the governor continues to make the case to not have Thanksgiving celebrations with extended family members and with rain in the forecast tomorrow for south Louisiana it will be harder to hold those gatherings…

The Louisiana Health Department expects to begin receiving the first COVID vaccine by mid-December. Stacy Hall, Director of the Office of Public Health Immunization Program says they are waiting on guidance from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices on who gets vaccinated first.

Hall says another priority group is those with preexisting conditions and most likely to succumb to the virus.

Despite warnings from health and government officials not to gather in large groups, millions of people will travel today to their Thanksgiving destination. ESPN reports the Pelicans and All-Star forward Brandon Ingram have agreed to a five-year 158-million dollar contract, which assures the 23-year-old will be a major building block as New Orleans tries to become a championship contender. The Pels have also signed newly acquired seven-footer Steven Adams to a two-year contract extension worth 35-million dollars.

LSU continues to prepare for Saturday’s game against fifth-ranked Texas A-and-M. Sophomore Jaray Jenkins has developed into a reliable pass catcher as he’s third on the team in catches. Jenkins credits his high school coaches at Jena for where he is at today…

It’s time to start defrosting that frozen turkey if you want it ready for baking or frying tomorrow.

Before you start to defrost that bird Ag Commissioner Mike Strain wants you to know that they can be covered in salmonella, and washing your bird can spread those germs up to three feet from the sink.

Strain recommends two safe ways to defrost your turkey, letting it sit in your fridge, or submerging it in cold water. He warns neither process happens fast.

Strain says there’s a third option, microwave defrosting, but just make sure you thoroughly clean your microwave after doing that.

Food safety extends beyond prep. Strain says instead of relying on visual cues to determine when your bird is cooked, use a food thermometer to confirm it’s safe to eat.

Today is typically the one busiest travel days of the year however AAA projects 50 million Americans will travel for Thanksgiving this year a drop from 55 million last year. Louisiana AAA spokesperson Don Redman says however we could see a decrease of even more than ten percent in travelers.

While overall anticipated travel is predicted to be down by ten percent, Redman says car travel is expected to decrease by only five percent compared to 2019. As for other modes of travel…

Redman says if you are traveling by air, even with estimated travel down by 50-percent for airlines this year don’t expect to have an empty seat beside you to stretch out.

Redmond also reminds travelers to check what restrictions are in place for your intended destination pandemic wise and advises you to visit the CDC’s website for guidance.

Healthcare personnel includes those who provide janitorial and other essential services in hospital settings and have direct contact with patients.

Hall predicts that the public will then be able to receive COVID vaccinations by mid-2021.

The Pfizer vaccine is expected to receive FDA approval the second week of December and then ship out to states.  Both the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines require cold storage and Hall says they have already tested protocols for distribution.

Bars will be banned from operating in any parish with a greater than five percent positivity rate, down from the current ten percent limit. functionally closing nearly all bars. Stadium capacity at sporting events will be limited to 25 percent.

Once the rain begins falling it is likely people will flock indoors where transmission is 20 times more likely than outdoors.

The Pelicans have finalized the four-team trade that sends Jrue Holiday to Milwaukee and in return, New Orleans gets seven-foot center Steven Adams from Oklahoma City. Also, Forward Brandon Ingram has agreed to a five-year, 158 million dollar contract extension.

Louisiana Tech football coach Skip Holtz said today he’s disappointed, frustrated, and angry over Saturday’s game against FIU being canceled because of COVID issues with FIU. It’s the fourth straight Saturday that the Bulldogs will not play due to a postponement or cancelation, the third by the opponent. They hope to play on December third versus North Texas.

ULM is looking forward to playing its first game since November seventh as the Warhawks will host the Ragin Cajuns this Saturday. AAA spokesperson Don Redman says the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Louisiana is $1.84 at the pump.

Redman expects gas prices to keep dropping, as prices in December in January tend to be the best for gas. As for next spring, when demand typically increases, predicting prices at the pump are questionable.

The governor’s office says the latest White House Coronavirus Task Force report for Louisiana says aggressive testing should be combined with significant behavior change of all Americans.
