The statewide average for a gallon of regular gasoline has dipped to about $1.95.  COVID-19 economic impacts, as well as overproduction between OPEC and Russia, are two main factors.  AAA fuel analyst Don Redman says this isn’t the normal season for savings at the pump.

The state is reporting 479 coronavirus cases and 10 deaths, the majority are in the New Orleans area of the state. The Federal government has pushed the tax deadline to July 15, no word on state taxes yet.

The state is working overtime to secure enough face masks for hospital workers, and respirators for potential patients ahead of what may be a surge in COVID-19 hospitalizations.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission executive director Ava Dejoie says the department has been inundated with unemployment assistance claims as many people have lost work due to COVID-19. The first checks are anticipated to be sent out next week. Dejoie says staffing of the department has been shifted from other divisions to help process the claims.

The maximum unemployment benefit is $247 per week.

Food banks across the nation are seeing a surge in those seeking assistance with the COVID-19 outbreak’s effect on the economy. Second Harvest serves 23 Parishes in the state including the greater New Orleans area and Lafayette,  Communications Director Jay Vise (Vice) says they are no different.

The Louisiana Workforce Commission executive director Ava Dejoie says the department has been inundated with unemployment assistance claims as many people have lost work due to the virus.  Dejoie says as of noon on Thursday, the department had received 30,000 new claims this week.

The number of coronavirus cases shot up to 479 in Louisiana today. That’s up from 392 yesterday. Orleans Parish has 299, Jefferson has 90, Caddo 13 and St. Tammany 10. The state health department says a reported death at a St. Tammany parish hospital is a Mississippi resident. The number of Louisiana patients who have died is ten.

Governor John Bel Edwards warns Louisiana’s healthcare system could be overwhelmed within the next seven to ten days by COVID-19 cases without federal assistance. Edwards says the state’s trajectory of case growth is on the same path as Italy.

Saints Coach Sean Payton is the first person from the NFL to test positive for COVID-19. Payton said he started not feeling well on Sunday. The 56-year-old does not have a high fever or respiratory issues and he’ll spend the next few days quarantined at home.

Nearly 400 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Louisiana, as the number of cases rose by over 100 yesterday. The state is reporting ten people have died, but WWL-TV is reporting an eleventh death, the first one from St. Tammany Parish.

The crawfish industry is suffering major losses as the state goes into partial shutdown during the heart of the crawfish season. Vermilion Parish farmer Christian Richard says Lent is their best time of the year, but sales are way down because of restaurant closings and social distancing…

Italy has surpassed China to lead the world in COVID-19 related deaths at 3,405. Coronavirus has claimed ten lives in Louisiana and WWL-TV reports St. Tammany Parish has its first death. Edwards is concerned about not having enough health care workers, hospital beds and ventilators and expressed that concern with the President during a video conference call with other governors.

There are 392 cases of coronavirus in Louisiana. Rapides Parish recorded its first case yesterday.

Saints Coach Sean Payton is the first person from the NFL to test positive for COVID-19. Payton said he started not feeling well on Sunday and took the test Monday and found out he was one of the 392 people in Louisiana to test positive for the virus on Thursday afternoon. Payton says he does not have a high fever or respiratory issues. The 56-year-old posted a picture of himself and his dog hanging out at his house and said he’s feeling better and has four more days of isolation at his home.

Boston Celtics guard Marcus Smart and two unidentified Los Angeles Lakers have also tested positive for COVID-19.

Saints defensive tackle David Onyemata says the brotherhood he has with the rest of his defensive line is the reason why he re-signed with the Black and Gold. Onyemata is coming off a season where he had three sacks and 32 tackles.

The Saints have restructured the contracts of wide receiver Michael Thomas and offensive tackle Terron Armstead, converting their base salaries to bonuses. The new deals save the Black and Gold 16 million dollars against the salary cap.

ESPN’s Field Yates reports New Orleans has also picked up the fifth-year options for both cornerback Marcus Lattimore and offensive tackle Ryan Ramczyk.

And Former Saints wide receiver Keith Kirkwood has reportedly signed a one-year deal with the Panthers to catch passes from Teddy Bridgewater. Kirkwood caught 13 passes in New Orleans but did not catch a pass last season after injuring his hamstring during warmups before the Saints played the Rams in week two.

The coronavirus outbreak has not stopped LSU football coach Ed Orgeron from recruiting. The Tigers have received a verbal commitment from three-star Florida safety Dakota Mitchell. He’s the fifth member of the 2021 recruiting class to commit to LSU
