Governor John Bel Edwards travels to Morgan City today. His office says he’ll announce a major flood protection project at the Port of Morgan City. And then this afternoon Edwards will join officials from the Ochsner Health System for an announcement at the Teche Regional Medical Center.

Louisiana received 18 dollars per person in federal funding to fight the opioid epidemic last year, for a total of 82 million dollars from over 50 different revenue streams according to the Bipartisan Policy Center. State Senator Francis Thompson has filed legislation to prohibit non-dairy products from describing themselves as milk. Thompson says the legislation is aimed at Almond milk, which does not come from a cow. The Delhi Democrat says cauliflower “rice” and lab grown “steak” need to change their labeling as well…

The Saints got a victory at the NFL Owners meeting in Arizona as the league has decided to expand instant replay, giving coaches the ability to review all offensive and defensive pass interference calls, in addition to non-calls. Coach Sean Payton lobbied hard for the change after his team was denied a chance of reaching the Super Bowl because of a non pass interference call in the NFC Championship game. Owner Gayle Benson says owners are compassionate about the issue, because they don’t want what happened to the Saints, to happen to them.

LSU’s hitting woes continued last night and it cost them a loss as McNeese blanked the Tigers two to nothing. It’s the third win for the Cowboys in the last four meetings against the Tigers. Freshman right hander Brett Payne threw six shutout innings and struck out five.

ULM scored five runs in the eighth inning as the Warhawks defeated La Tech nine to four. Blake Buckman belted a three-run homer. Frank Colton hit a walk off homer as the Cajuns defeated Tulane seven to six.

The LSU men’s basketball team leaves for Washington D-C today where they’ll take on the Michigan State Spartans on Friday night in the Sweet 16. The Pelicans lost to Atlanta Hawks 130-120. Earlier in the day, New Orleans announced that Jrue Holiday will miss the rest of the season after he had surgery to repair a damaged ab muscle. The Pels are now 1-and-8 since their starting shooting guard went down with an injury.

The Louisiana Dairy Industry is having a cow over the rise of almond “milk”, saying the label is not accurate, so Delhi Senator Francis Thompson has filed a bill to prohibit non-dairy products from describing themselves as milk. Thompson says the false advertising tricks some into buying the less nutritious dairy alternative.

A cup of Almond milk is lower in calories and higher in calcium than a cup of two percent dairy milk, but contains less protein and other nutrients.

In North America, almonds are almost exclusively grown in California, and Thompson says the west coast product is damaging local industry by misleading Louisianans about what they’re actually buying. The Senator says the bill would help protect local farmers.

It’s estimated there are now fewer than 80 dairy operations in the state, which features a declining dairy cow population that could approach 8,000 in the near future.

And while Thompson’s bill only specifically addresses “milk”, the Senator says it’s not the only labeling dispute that he’s considering pursuing. The Delhi Democrat says products like cauliflower “rice” and lab grown “steak” need to change their labeling.

Three men are behind bars following accusations they managed to heist over 100 iPhones from a Best Buy in Baton Rouge. Investigators says the alarms sounded in the overnight hours at the Millerville Road store. East Baton Rouge Sheriff’s detective Major Willie Stewart says the total cost of the phones was over six figures.

An SUV seen on security footage was later spotted at a hotel where the arrest was made yesterday. Stewart says investigators believe the trio may be a part of a bigger group that may have hit other Best Buy locations, including a store in Lake Charles, on the hunt for iPhones.

Stewart says two of the suspects are from California while the other is from Georgia and all three are facing a slew of charges.

That 82 million was a 71 percent increase in funding over 2017, as the feds OK’d a substantial increase in funds to treat the growing epidemic.

State Medicaid enrollees made 1,858,000 emergency department stays from June 2017-18, and Parekh says 40% of those with opioid use disorders are on the government-run health insurance. He credits Governor Edwards’ Medicaid expansion with getting treatment into areas hardest hit by the epidemic.

Medicaid spent a projected 28 million dollars on opioid treatment drugs and naloxone in 2018.

Total opioid deaths rose from 346 in 2016 to 415 in Louisiana for 2017, and Fentanyl deaths in particular increased from 2.0 deaths per 100,000 in 2016 to 3.6. Parekh says one way to get that number to come down would be addressing addiction in the inmate population.

Louisiana’s rate of 9.3 deaths per 100,000 residents in 2017 was noticeably lower than the southern regional average of 14.1.

The Office of Juvenile Justice cut the ribbon on a new, modern rehabilitation facility in Bunkie today after months of delays. Deputy Secretary Dr. James Bueche says the “Missouri Model” is more effective, and will save money that can be used to build more state-of-the-art facilities.

Those new facilities may be needed sooner rather than later, as an LSU study predicts the juvenile prison population will increase by 67 people in 2020 when 17-year-old violent offenders are no longer prosecuted as adults.
After days of specualtion, the Saints announced the signing of 2018 Pro Bowl tight end Jared Cook today. The 32-year-old has reportedly received a two-year contract worth 15.5 million dollars. Cook caught 68 passes for the Raiders last year.

The historically change-averse NFL leadership has expressed hesitation about any officiating overhauls in the past, mainly citing concerns about adding additional time to the already lengthy broadcasts. Saints president Dennis Lauscha says that concern is one of the biggest hurdles they face.

The Acadiana Center for Youth was allocated four million dollars to start by legislators to get it’s operations off the ground.

Testing in other states has shown that kids who participate in programs that are less punitive, and more oriented towards rehabilitation, are less likely to end up in the adult prison system later in life. Bueche says that change starts by rehabbing kids in a smaller, more focused environment.

Bueche says they plan to use this model moving forward for all new facilities, and plan to help pay for future construction using the savings you can generate from housing youths in the smaller rehabilitation centers.
