Motorists continue to see higher gas prices, and a return to $3.00 a gallon may not be too far off. The current average for a gallon of regular gasoline is 2.43, up from six cents a week ago. Triple A fuel analyst Don Redman says this is unusual for this time of year as demand is typically down:

Governor Edwards has said he doesn’t want to make major changes, but Senate Education Chairman Blade Morrish is proposing a four-thousand dollar stipend for those TOPS Opporutunity recipients, but the award amount would go up for students who achieve a higher ACT score and GPA…

Pat Brooks had just left an off-duty job around 9:45 last night when he made impact with a black male wearing a black shirt and black pants on a street with no lights. The pedestrian later died.

In the NBA, the Pelicans can’t catch a break without season-ending injured DeMarcus Cousins as New Orleans fell to the Kings last night, 114-103. Anthony Davis had 23 points and 13 rebounds for the Pels, while Jrue Holiday scored 21. The Pelicans next will visit Oklahoma City on Friday night.

Southeastern Louisiana names Abbeville native Frank Scelfo as its new head football coach. He takes over for Ron Roberts who left the Lions after six seasons to coach UL-Lafayette’s defense. Roberts led the Lions through their most successful run since the school restarted its football program in 2002, and a fired up Scelfo says he expects to maintain that momentum…:

A 14-year-old Lafayette girl who is battling cystic fibrosis got the thrill of a lifetime, being a special guest in attendance at the State of the Union address last night.  Bella Reed was a guest of St. Landry Parish Congressman Clay Higgins.   He says having Bella in attendance hopefully will bring more awareness to the disease as he introduces legislation supporting ongoing research…

Morrish proposes a 4,000 dollar stipend for TOPS Opportunity recipients, those are incoming freshman that have a C average high school grades. He says students that have a higher GPA and ACT score will receive higher financial awards.

Morrish says students who receive the 4-thousand dollar stipend can look at attending a community college, if they can’t afford a full tuition at LSU or a UL System school…

Governor John Bel Edwards has already said he doesn’t see the need to make major changes to TOPS. But Morrish says his plan is necessary to help maintain the program as the state struggles to pass a balanced budget

Morrish’s proposal would need legislative approval during the regular session. He says if enacted, it would save the state 20-million dollars a year.

Harris says they also believe some Medicaid patients should pay a copay for services and medications. The Alexandria lawmaker says GOP legislators also want to a new website to track spending and they are pushing for a lower spending cap…

Governor Edwards responded to the proposals saying while none of these measures accomplish fixing the fiscal cliff, he views them as a positive development in their ongoing discussions.

For the first time since 1866, there will be a blue moon a super moon and a total lunar eclipse simultaneously in the US. Louisiana won’t see much of the eclipse as the moon will be setting.  LSU Physics and Astronomy graduate student Tyler Ellis says you can still watch it on the internet…

New Orleans city officials are getting ready for Mardi Gras.  Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced today NOPD will be on the streets at 100% capacity. He also says there is a ban on closed tents along parade routes.   The Mayor says it’s because someone fired a gun from inside a port-a-potty last year.  They won’t be allowed on parade routes either and anyone with a port-a-potty will be fined 250 dollars.
