The Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office says a deputy involved shooting occurred in Sulphur. They say when responding to a scene, cops saw a man with a firearm and gave verbal commands to drop it which he refused. Deputies opened fire on the suspect and wounded him. He is identified as 45-year-old David Rozas of Sulphur.

A Livingston Parish woman is under arrest after allegedly falsely claiming she was raped by a sheriff’s deputy. 38-year-old Sherri Penton claimed a deputy sexually assaulted her in his car after meeting on an internet dating site. The LPSO deputy claimed the sex was consensual. State police says they didn’t find evidence in the deputy’s car. Penton is charged with with filing a false complaint against law enforcement and criminal mischief.

Lawyers for convicted former New Orleans Congressman Bill Jefferson are reportedly close to reaching a deal with federal prosecutors on the disgraced lawmaker’s sentence for corruption convictions. Jefferson, famous for hiding $90,000 in his freezer, received a 13-year sentence in 2009, but was release earlier this year after a judge dismissed seven charges because of new corruption laws. Prosecutors could re-try Jefferson, drop the charges or reach a deal with his legal team.

There is another tool being studied to help adults who are overweight — an oral device that slows down eating to reduce food intake, making you feel as full even though you ate less in the same amount of time. Dr. Donna Ryan, interim executive director of LSU’s Pennington Biomedical Research Center, explains the biological factors of the SmartByte system.:

Southeastern had an easy time against UNO, the Lions picking up an 80-53.

State Police say a Denham Springs woman is under arrest for allegedly filing a false rape complaint against a Livingston Parish Sheriff’s deputy. They believe 38-year-old Sherri Penton had reportedly met the deputy online and the two had consensual relations, but the suspect went to a hospital and said she had been raped. The LSP crime lab used DNA evidence and found that Penton’s story was not true. She is charged with with filing a false complaint against law enforcement and criminal mischief.

Kyle Duncan, the Louisiana nominee for the federal Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals seat will go before the Senate Judiciary committee today.  Attorney General Jeff Landry has been lobbying for Duncan, who was nominated by President Donald Trump. He says especially for conservatives, this is an easy selection.

Senator John Kennedy sits on the committee and has yet to make a decision on if Duncan should be judge. Landry says it’s a bit odd that Kennedy is taking so long to decide on an individual with Duncan’s record and skill set.

Governor John Bel Edwards participated in a criminal justice reform event organized by the Pew Charitable Trusts in Washington DC today.  The Edwards Administration helped passed ten new laws allowing for the early release of non-violent prisoners.  Nearly two-thousand were released earlier this month.  Edwards says he is keeping his campaign promise to lower the jail population…

The suspected killer accused in the random shooting deaths of three people has pleaded not guilty to two of the murders which occurred in East Feliciana Parish. 36-year-old Ryan Sharpe entered two pleas there this morning and requested a public defender. Sharpe also allegedly shot and killed a man in East Baton Rouge Parish.

UL Lafayette Football Coach Mark Hudspeth is expected to make a decision today on who will start at quarterback this Saturday against Appalachian State. It will be either senior Jordan Davis who threw for 225 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions as he came off the bench in the 34-24 loss to Georgia Southern. Or it could be freshman Levi Lewis, who started against Georgia Southern, but was ineffective and replaced by Davis.

The Saints return to practice tomorrow to begin preparations for Sunday’s NFC South showdown against the Panthers. New Orleans beat Carolina earlier this year, but Panthers QB Cam Newton looks much healthier now. Both teams are 8-and-3 and tied for first place.
