Congressman Garret Graves of Baton Rouge has drafted legislation that aims to get people help faster after disasters. He says flood insurance companies typically have to give homeowners answers within 30 days and he wants the National Flood Insurance Program to do the same. A 45-year-old Baton Rouge man walking on a roadway early Sunday morning was hit and killed according to police. They say Reginald Holden died after being struck by a Chevrolet Equinox.

It’s been 10 years since the Mercedes Benz Superdome reopened after Hurricane Katrina, as the Saints and Falcons prepare to kickoff tonight in New Orleans. Kathleen Blanco was governor at the time and says even though she was criticized for it, Saints owner Tom Benson promised if they could open the Superdome before the 2006 season, he wouldn’t move the franchise:

She says the opening and win that night over the Falcons revived the city and she received many apologies afterwards.

The Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office is investigating an apparent Sunday murder-suicide. It’s reported that 67-year-old Larry Townsend shot and killed 68-year-old Linda Townsend, his wife, before turning the gun on himself. JPSO is trying to determine a motive.

A new book about the murders of prostitutes in Jefferson Davis parish is surrounded by controversy. Ethan Brown, who wrote Murder on the Bayou, alleges Congressman Charles Boustany may have been involved with the women. Brown says Boustany’s response to the accusation is included in the book…:

State Police say a woman from Bastrop died after being hit by a vehicle driven by a 73-year-old man while she was trying to cross US Highway 165. They say William Hendrix Jr of Bastrop was traveling on 165 around 12:45am Sunday morning, when he struck the pedestrian, 38-year-old Lela Brandon. Brandon was taken to a local hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

New Orleans Police say they arrested seven people in an otherwise uneventful demonstration over the Andrew Jackson statue in Jackson Square. An activist group said they were going to take the statue down, but the city warned that vandalizing public property is a crime. Take Em Down Nola backs plans to remove several local monuments to the Confederacy, and has complained about the city’s delay in taking them down.

The ACLU of Louisiana is reacting to reports about a man who was arrested in Lafayette and charged with “flag desecration.” Charri Mohama was booked for allegedly being shown on tape burning an American flag, and tearing up another. In a release, the ACLU of Louisiana says it is not a crime to destroy or damage the flag.

Over a month after the historic flooding in south Louisiana, many flood victims are still struggling to recover. Congressman Garret Graves of Baton Rouge has introduced a bill to help future disaster victims get assistance in a timely manner. He says the biggest complaint he’s heard is that it’s taking too long to get money from flood insurance claims.

Graves’ bill would require the national flood insurance program to make determinations within 30 days of the claim being filed. He says people need this assistance now, and he wants to push this bill through in an expedited process.

Graves says schools, police and fire departments, and drainage systems are all funded by property taxes. He says if people can’t get their homes repaired quickly, it will cause major problems for the entire community because there will be less tax revenue coming in.

A new book about the murders of prostitutes in Jefferson Davis parish is surrounded by controversy. Murder in the Bayou by Ethan Brown documents the author’s investigation into the murders of 8 prostitutes between 2005 and 2009. The book alleges that Congressman Charles Boustany may have been involved with the women. Brown, who appeared on the Jim Engster Show, says Boustany’s response to the accusation is included in the book.

The book claims that a staffer at Boustany’s office also worked at the hotel where these women would perform the services. Brown says there is no question that staffer worked at the Boudreaux Inn.

Former KKK Grand Wizard and U.S. Senate candidate David Duke is expected to be at protest in Jackson Square today where the activist group, Take Em Down NOLA, will push to remove the statue of Andrew Jackson. Duke’s website says he will be pushing to keep the monument up. But group member Malcom Suber says their position has always been to remove any monuments that represent white supremacy.

Hunters for the Hungry is hosting their annual Cleanout your Freezer day tomorrow from 1 to 4 p.m. for hunters to donate last season’s game before the start of hunting season. H-F-H Executive Director Jimmy Anthony says there are 12 collection sites and to find one in your area visit hunters-the-number-4-hungry-louisiana-dot-org (hunters4hungrylouisiana.org). He says they are not collecting any meat over a year old.

Over 100-thousand dollars has been donated to Livingston Parish Schools to help in the flood recovery process. Superintendent Rick Wentzel says the St. Tammany Parish School System really stepped up to help. He also says they received a massive donation from a big named celebrity.

The Louisiana Department of Health has updated the number of Zika and West Nile cases in the state. There are now 26 confirmed cases of West Nile in Louisiana so far this year. There were no deaths linked to West Nile in 2016. There are 31 confirmed Zika cases in the state so far. All of the cases of Zika virus were travel related and there has been no local transmission.

Buckwheat Zydeco, legendary accordionist and singer, passed away this morning of lung cancer at the age of 68. Stanley Dural, Jr, better known as Buckwheat, helped to introduce the Louisiana Zydeco music to the world. He performed during the 1996 summer Olympics closing ceremony, President Bill Clinton’s inauguration, and was featured on the Late Night with Jimmy Fallon. Dural was diagnosed with lung cancer in January of 2013.
