 A study from State Farm finds Louisiana comes in at number 11 for states in paid wind claims. Company spokesperson Roszell Gadson says in 2015, State Farm paid 33-hundred wind and tornado claims on structures around the state. Gadson says last week’s tornado outbreak illustrates we we are in a very active part of the country when it comes to severe weather…

 Texas ranked number one with more than 11-thousand paid State Farm wind and tornado claims. Gadson says State Farm encourages Louisiana residents to take advantage of Severe Weather Awareness Week by checking to make sure their insurance policy covers wind claims….

According to a new study from WalletHub, Louisiana is the worst state for women. Jill Gonzales from Wallet Hub says they looked at over 15 metrics including median earnings for female workers, women’s preventative healthcare, the female uninsured rate and the female homicide rate.

Gonzales says Louisiana has one of the highest high school dropout rates for women at just over 4%. She says the ranking for women’s equality in the workplace is also very low. She says there are things our state can do to improve its ranking.

Louisiana ranks near the bottom in terms of women living in poverty. Gonzales says only New Mexico and Mississippi have higher poverty rates for women.

Gonzales says the median income and unemployment rates for women contribute to that number. Louisiana ranked 33rd for women’s unemployment rate and 31st for median earnings tor females.

Gas prices are starting to rise as refineries conduct maintenance in preparation for the busy driving season this summer. AAA spokesperson Don Redman says the statewide average has increased over three cents since last week and this price increase is typical for this time of year.

Redman says refineries are also slowing production in response to abundant supplies, but he says gas prices shouldn’t get too high.

 Currently the average price for a gallon of regular gasoline in Louisiana is $1.58. Redman says he anticipates the price to keep rising through March….

The State House of Representatives continues to put off voting on numerous tax bills, including one that would increase the tax on alcohol for the first time in decades. Governor John Bel Edwards has suggested tax hikes as a way to help solve the state’s fiscal crisis. Natchitoches Representative Kenny Cox says he’s still trying to come up with 70 votes on the House floor for his bill to get approval…

The state is facing a $940 million deficit this fiscal year and a $2 billion deficit next fiscal year. Cox says the state needs the revenue raised by the tax to close this gap.

The Sun Belt Conference is removing New Mexico State and Idaho from its league. The two football-only members will leave the conference following the 2017 season. With the addition of Coastal Carolina, the Sun Belt will be a 10-member league in 2018. Sun Belt Commissioner Karl Benson likes the idea of a 10-team league and will discuss with coaches and ADs about adding a conference championship game…

Ruston Representative Robert Shadoin says things are moving, but slowly. Shadoin says there will likely be some changes to the House’s approved budget cut bill because those cuts were deeper than expected. He says he didn’t want to vote for the increase in the sales tax but it had to be done…

A Financial Aid Working Group met today to make a plan to ensure public high school students comply with a new policy requiring them to apply for financial aid to go to college. Ken Bradford, Assistant Superintendent at the Department of Education, says he is disappointed that only 44% of students are applying for any kind of financial aid….

A Baton Rouge man has been arrested after an unrelated DNA test links him to a 1996 rape case. Baton Rouge Police Sgt. Don Coppola says 20 years ago, a 17-year-old girl was walking down the street and asked now 59-year-old Jerry Williams for a ride, where he then took her to his house and raped her. He says during the initial investigation, detectives had trouble re-contacting the victim so the case went unsolved…

The Girls Top 28 State Tournament is underway in Hammond. Tonight it’s the Class Five-A semifinals as Natchitoches Central faces Mount Carmel and Denham Springs battles Mandeville.

The Sun Belt Conference announced today that football member schools New Mexico State and Idaho are leaving the league following the 2017 season. Which means the Sun Belt will be a 10-team league in 2018 as Coastal Carolina is still set to join the conference. Commissioner Karl Benson says geography and the fact that New Mexico State and Idaho haven’t won many football games, went into the decision by the league presidents to remove those two schools.

Saints Owner Tom Benson released a statement today regarding the release of wide receiver Marques Colston. Benson said there have been very few players in our franchise’s history that have represented this team with the class, dignity and performance of Marques Colston. After 10 seasons, Colston leaves New Orleans as the team’s all-time leading receiver. He also holds the franchise’s mark for most receiving yards and touchdowns.

NFL analyst Mike Detillier says Colston will be tough to replace, but he advises against the Saints using an early draft pick to find his replacement…

Not much action at the State Capitol today as House members put off for another day votes on bills that would increase taxes on alcohol and cigarettes. A senate committee has also decided to wait until Thursday to approve its version of a budget cutting plan. Lawmakers have until March ninth to agree on a plan to close a 940-million dollar deficit for this fiscal year.

According to Bankrate-dot-com, Louisiana is the fifth worst state in the country for retirees. Bankrate’s Senior Analyst Claes Bell says the state’s high crime rate and poor healthcare quality are to blame. But Bell says the news isn’t all bad. He says retirees who live on an fixed income may find Louisiana a good state to spend their golden years…

The second former Marksville officer who is accused in the fatal shooting of a six-year-old boy could be released on bond as early as tomorrow. The attorney for 31-year-old Derrick Stafford says the paperwork is ready to be filed for Stafford to gain his release on a one-million dollar property bond. The other officer involved in the shooting, Norris Greenhouse Junior, was released on a one million dollar bond in November.

A Financial Aid Working Group is meeting today to formulate a plan to make sure public high school students comply with a new policy requiring them to apply for assistance to go to college. Department of Education’s Assistant Superintendent Ken Bradford says only 44% of students are applying for any kind of financial aid, which is disappointing….

Bradford says 55% of the new jobs in Louisiana will require at least one to two years of specialized education or training. He says many families don’t realize that, even if a student doesn’t get a scholarship, there are other options out there that help pay for education after high school.

Bradford says, in two years, students will have to either fill out a financial aid form, apply for TOPS or sign a waiver allowing them to opt out in order to get their diploma. He says the Financial Aid Working Group is also discussing how schools can be more of assistance in helping students get financial aid.

A Baton Rouge man is facing rape charges after an unrelated December arrest lead to DNA being obtained which links him to a 1996 assault. Baton Rouge Police Sgt. Don Coppola says 59-year-old Jerry Williams was asked about the rape of a 17-year-old 20 years ago, but cops ran into a road block with the case…:

Multiple media outlets are reporting that the second suspect in the case of Marksville officers accused of shooting a vehicle occupied by a six year old boy who died, could be released on bond as soon as tomorrow. 31-year-old Derrick Stafford has been in jail since the November arrest, but officials say paperwork is being completed to meet a $1 million dollar property bond. The other officer, Norris Greenhouse Jr, was released on the same bond in November. The trial for Stafford is set for September; trial for Greenhouse is in November.

WAFB-TV is reporting that the second Marksville deputy who is accused of opening fire on a vehicle last November, killing a 6-year-old boy, is expected to bond out of jail, possibly as early as tomorrow. Derrick Stafford’s family is said to have secured enough property to post the $1 million dollar bond, which is what Norris Greenhouse Jr already did. They are both charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of attempted second-degree murder.

Most folks who are retiring aren’t looking at Louisiana. Bankrate.com found Louisiana is the 5th worst state for retirement, mainly due to poor healthcare and a high crime rate. BankeRate spokesperson Claes (Claus) Bell says weather was also considered in their study…:

Today is super Tuesday and many political pundits say candidates will still be working to garner support for Louisianians on the March 5th Presidential Primary after tonight. Republicans Donald Trump and Marco Rubio are planning rallies in Louisiana on Friday. Pollster John Couvillon of JMC Analytics says even though Trump has been leading, Rubio and Ted Cruz will still be contenders in the race…:

The team’s all-time leader in catches, receiving yards and touchdowns was released after a sensational career in the Crescent City. NFL analyst Mike Detillier says Colston goes down as the Saints best receiver in the franchise’s history…

It’s the final regular season home game for the LSU men’s basketball team as they take on the Missouri Tigers. Before the contest, seniors Keith Hornsby, Josh Gray and Henry Shortess will be recognized. Hornsby will miss his third straight game with a sports hernia. Even without Hornsby, the Tigers should win. Missouri is just 10-19 on the season, 3-13 in the SEC. Tip-off is at 8 PM.

Last night in college hoops…Nicholls State kept its hopes alive to reach the Southland Conference Tournament as they defeated UNO 80-76. McNeese State won its first road game of the year as the Cowboys defeated Lamar 77-74. Southeastern Louisiana edged Northwestern State 84-82. Jordan Capps had 29 points and 19 rebounds as the Lions won their 7th straight home game. And in the SWAC…Mississippi Valley edged Southern 58-57.
