The Louisiana Department of Agriculture says its new mobile pet shelter is ready for use. Commissioner Mike Strain says the tractor trailer can be used to evacuate up 55 domesticated animals in the event of an emergency.

Before the mobile shelter, they were loading pets into 18-wheelers to transport them during natural disasters which was very difficult and not as safe. He says if a natural disaster strikes and you can’t take your pet with you, when you come to an evacuation point, L-D-A-F will provide safe transportation to a mega pet shelter….

Strain says 40-thousand of the 80-thousand dollars needed to complete the project was donated by veterinary foundations. He says they want to ensure all animals are safe and well taken care of in the event of an emergency.

So in that time how has the state improved efforts to make such a large scale evacuation smoother? Department of Transportation spokesman Rodney Mallett says they now contract with bus services…:

At the time Katrina approached, there was no real mechanism in place to get so many citizens safely out of harm’s way — but Mallett says now there is. He says one of the important things they’ve learned in dealing with past contraflow situations, is to work closely with our neighbors:

Mallett says they have also expanded the Motorists Assistance program so that in a mass evacuation situation, there would be more vehicles out on the road to help out motorists who get stranded in travel lanes. President Barack Obama is currently walking through communities in New Orleans to see, hear about and recognize areas which suffered substantial damage following Hurricane Katrina, but 10 years later are thriving developments or where construction is well underway. Mr. Obama said today that New Orleans is a great example of innovation in restoring urban communities.

10 years ago thousands of people were evacuating out of the New Orleans area as Hurricane Katrina was bearing down on Louisiana; and it was chaos. The town of Sunset is in mourning today after one of their officers was killed while responding to a domestic disturbance allegedly by a man who also is accused of stabbing two sisters; one who died. Investigators believe the suspect, Harrison Lee Riley Jr., was assaulting his wife and the two women he stabbed were trying to protect her. Officer Henry Nelson responded to the scene and was gunned down. Sunset Mayor Charles James says the incident has rocked the small St. Landry Parish:

Meanwhile visitation for the State Trooper who was also killed this week, Steven Vincent, will take place tomorrow from 3pm-9pm at the Lake Charles Civic Center Rosa Heart Theater in Lake Charles. The location was updated to accommodate the large number of people who plan to attend.

State officials continue to bring awareness to the growing heroin and synthetic problem in and around the Baton Rouge community. East Baton Rouge Parish Coroner Beau Clark says his office has already seen 24 heroin overdose deaths so far this year. He says they are teaming up with Capital Area Human Services in the effort because this is the time of year they tend to see a spike in the problem…:

Gas prices dropped two pennies from the day before. The current statewide average for a gallon of regular is $2.22. That’s almost a dime less from the same time last week.

The merger of Entergy Louisiana and Entergy Gulf States Louisiana has been okayed by the Louisiana Public Service Commission. Entergy Louisiana President Phillip May says they anticipate this will mean up to $140 million in savings to customers…:

It’s being reported that the man accused of killing Sunset Police Officer Henry Nelson was his cousin. Authorities say 35-year-old Harrison Lee Riley, Jr. and Nelson were related, but it is unclear how close. Riley also allegedly stabbed three women in the incident, killing 40-year-old Shameka Johnson. The two other victims, including the suspect’s wife, are hospitalized with stab wounds. Nelson is expected to be charged with two counts of first degree murder among other charges.

The Saints are back at practice today getting ready for the third preseason game on Sunday against the Houston Texans. Sean Payton, who missed yesterday’s practice to be with his daughter as she reported to Pepperdine University, is back with the team today. Several players who have been out of practice because of injury, were also on the field today….cornerback Keenan Lewis, linebacker Hau-oli Kikaha (Ha-uw-lee Kee-kah-Ha) , and linebacker Ramon Humber, who has been out for awhile. Cornerback Brandon Browner continues to watch from the sidelines.

According to Fox Sports, the Saints are trying to get out of having to pay former linebacker Junior Galette some guaranteed money. The Saints apparently believe they don’t owe Galette a guaranette on his base 1.25 million dollar salary because he violated the “rep and warranty language” in his contract. Galette was released by the Saints last month and he’ll reportedly miss this season after tearing his achilles tendon in training camp for the Washington Redskins.

For what it’s worth, ESPN’s Kirk Herbstreit has picked the LSU Tigers to win the Southeastern Conference. Herbie has the Bayou Bengals beating Tennessee in the SEC championship game and advancing to the college football playoff. Herbstreit believes Ohio State will repeat as national champs.

ESPN’s Outside the Lines is reporting former Louisiana Tech standout IK Enemkpali punched a man in 2011 that he thought was a woman he arranged to have sex with. The incident result in Enemkpali needing surgery and he missed the Bulldogs season opener that year against Southern Miss.

A week from tonight, the Southland Conference football season gets underway with Northwestern State hosting Southeastern Louisiana. The Demons still have not named a starting quarterback. There are four players battling for that opportunity. Coach Jay Thomas says its possible that he’ll play all four.

The Coast Guard reports that two crew members were injured after a natural gas pipeline ruptured and caught fire off the Louisiana coast. They say the incident happened about 25 miles south of Marsh Island. The injured crewmen were transported to Houma. Their condition is unknown. Authorities say the fire is extinguished and the pipeline’s owner is sending a vessel to repair the ruptured pipeline. The incident is under investigation.

For the second time within a week, a Louisiana policeman has been shot dead in the line of duty. St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby Guidroz says Harrison Lee Wiley Junior of Arnaudville is accused of killing Sunset Police officer Henry Nelson during a domestic disturbance. Guirdoz says they believe Wiley was on some sort of illegal narcotic, but they are not sure what….

The University of Louisiana Lafayette New Iberia Research Center is part of a global effort testing an Ebola vaccine for wild apes. Apes Inc. President Dr. Peter Walsh says this testing could help pave the way for an oral vaccination for humans….

The CDC says the 2014 Ebola outbreak in West Africa claimed about 11-thousand lives.

Governor Bobby Jindal is urging President Barack Obama not to politicize his visit to New Orleans today by discussing climate change. In a letter to the President, Jindal asks Obama to “respect this important time of remembrance by not inserting the divisive political agenda of liberal environmental activism.” The President’s visit is part of commemorations of the 10 year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina.
