Replicas of Christopher Columbus’ ships, the Nina and Pinta, will be on display in Houma starting today. The ships are floating museums educating the public on the type of ship that Columbus used during the age of discovery. Captain of the Nina, Stephen Sanger, says the ships attract people of all ages…

The ships will be on display through December 7th at the Downtown Marina in Houma. Sanger says both of these ships are Portuguese Caravels that were hand crafted in Brazil…

Both ships spend about 10 months out of the year traveling around the United States giving people a glimpse of what life was like for sailors in the 15th century. Sanger says while the Pinta is a slightly larger replica than the original, the Nina is an exact replica of Columbus’ ship…

The Food and Drug Administration announces new rules mandating chain restaurants and supermarkets serving prepared food put calorie counts on the menus. The regulation applies to any establishment that serves food, even movie theaters, and have 20 or more locations. Melissa Martin is the state Department of Health and Hospitals “Well-Ahead” manager.:

The rules also apply to gas stations, bakeries, coffee shops, amusement parks and vending machines and they all have until November 2015 to comply. Martin believes these new rules will help people make a more informed decision when they are ordering food and drinks…:

Martin says menu labeling ensures customers process calorie information as they decide what to eat and drink. She feels this ruling will promote a healthier population…:

It maybe a tradition at your household to rinse the turkey before putting it in the oven for the Thanksgiving feast. But LSU AgCenter nutritionist Denise Holston-West advises against it. She says washing poultry or meat can spread bacteria

Louisiana continues to shatter employment records. Louisiana Workforce Commission Executive Director Curt Eysink says the number of private employment jobs has grown by 31-thousand over the last year. Total non-farm employment in Louisiana reached over one-point-nine million in October, a new record high.

Republican Senate candidate Bill Cassidy received the endorsement today of former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. Meanwhile, Senator Mary Landrieu spent the afternoon in Houma meeting with workers at Weeks Marine Incorporated and speakign with seniors and disabled citizens at a senior center. Political analyst Bernie Pinsoonat says expect Landrieu to be active on the campaign trail leading up to the December sixth election, but it’s likely not enough to keep her job as US Senator…

The former Destrehan High School teacher accused of participating in group sex with a 16-year-old student entered a not guilty plea to a charge of carnal knowledge of a juvenile. The judge loosened some restrictions of her bond, which will allow her to attend an exercise class and help her husband care for their three young children.

The Saints came up short again last night and fell to the Baltimore Ravens 34-27 to fall to 4-and-7 on the year. Quarterback Drew Brees threw for 420 yards and three touchdowns. He was also intercepted once and that was returned 44-yards for a touchdown. The loss drops the Saints record to 4-and-7 and Brees says this losing is no fun…

Despite the losing record, the Saints are tied for first place in the NFC South with Atlanta. New Orleans is at Pittsburgh this Sunday, while the Falcons host the Arizona Cardinals.

The Pelicans are home tonight to take on the Sacramento Kings. No Eric Gordon tonight for the Pels, he’ll be sindelined for awhile because of a shoulder injury. New Orleans is hoping to get Center Omer Asik back in the line-up. He’s missed the last four games because of a back injury.

LSU will leave tomorrow for its Thanksgiving match-up with Texas A-and-M. It’s the Tigers first game on Turkey Day since 1983, when they beat Tulane 20-7 in the Louisiana Superdome. Anthony Jennings is expected to start once again at quarterback and Coach Les Miles has given no indication on whether Brandon Harris will play.

Louisiana Tech will host Rice on Saturday. The winner is the west division champ in Conference USA. Bulldogs Coach Skip Holtz says they had a feeling the West would be won on the last game of the season…

A Jonesboro woman has been arrested in connection with the shooting death of a man inside his home. Fifty-one year-old Veronica Denise Jackson has been charged with second degree murder for allegedly shooting 58 year-old Grover Brown in rural Lincoln Parish. His body was discovered Sunday morning and that investigation continues.

A Moreauville family is fighting the town that is trying to enact a ban on vicious dogs. Joanna Armand, whose family owns a pit bull named Zeus, is fighting to lift that ban. Armand began an online petition and it has already generated over 245,000 signatures. She’s also reaching out to dog owners in Moreauville and Avoyelles Parish…

Moreauville passed an ordinance banning pit bulls and rottweilers from town limits. If the ban goes into effect, the family would be forced to give up one-year-old Zeus, who has no history of aggressive behavior. Armand says giving up Zeus would devastate her family since the dog provides love and support for four of her children who have special needs…

Armand calls Zeus a “Mom’s Helper” for the role he has taken with her children. It’s reported the ordinance was passed because several residents said they were chased by dogs in neighborhoods, although no attacks have been documented. The ban was to go into effect December 1, but that date has been put on hold. Armand feels the town handled this situation in the wrong way…

The Destrehan High School teacher accused of having a threesome with another teacher and a 16-year-old student has been formally charged. 34-year-old Shelley Dufrense pleaded not guilty in St. Charles Parish court today on carnal knowledge of a juvenile. Her bond conditions were also loosened up so she could attend Jazzercise and help out with her kids.

A West Monroe lawmaker filed a lawsuit this week seeking to extend the early voting period for the December 6th runoff because two days were lost this time due to the Thanksgiving Holidays. Governor Bobby Jindal declared this Friday a state holiday, Acadian Day, and polls are closed. Representative Marcus Hunter would like to see extra days either this week or next week.

The Destrehan High School teacher who was allegedly involved in a sex scandal with a 16-year-old student pleaded not guilty in court today. 34-year-old Shelley Dufresne was also granted more freedom on the conditions of her bail which means she can help her husband out with their young children. She is prohibited from having contact with the student in any way.

Local tensions abound in Louisiana amidst the riots in Ferguson last night after the decision by a grand jury not to indict officer Darren Wilson in the shooting death of Michael Brown. The Saints struggles continued last night as they fell to Baltimore 34-27. The defense struggled to contain Ravens running back Justin Forsett, who rushed for a career-high 182 yards and his 20-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter sent Who Dat fans home from the Superdome. Quarterback Drew Brees threw for 420 yards and three touchdown passes. But his one interception was returned 44 yards for a touchdown. New Orleans is now 4-and-7, but still tied with Atlanta for first place in the NFC South.

In the NBA…the seven and five Pelicans are back at home tonight following a four-game road trip. They host Sacramento at seven P-M. No Eric Gordon tonight, he’s out indefinitely with a shoulder injury.

In college hoops yesterday….LSU finished the Paradise Jam tournament in sixth place by losing to Clemson 64 to 61 yesterday. The Ragin Cajuns lost in Las Vegas yesterday as they fell to Milwaukee 56-52.

LSU has only a couple more days to prepare for Thursday night’s match-up against Texas A-and-M. The Tigers have won the two previous meetings against A-and-M, since the Aggies joined the Southeastern Conference. In both contests, LSU’s defense slowed down an A-and-M offense led by Johnny Manziel. Coach Les Miles says the Aggies offense hasn’t changed much since “Johnny Football” departed…

Miles says starting center Elliot Porter will not play against the Aggies. He has an injured ankle. Ethan Pocic will move over from right guard to center and Evan Washington will start at right guard for the seven and four Tigers.

Ragin Cajuns Coach Mark Hudspeth says linebacker Chris Hill has been dismissed from the team. The Florida native was arrested in October on a charge of domestic abuse battery.
