With Christmas dinner right around the corner, State Agriculture Commissioner Mike Strain reminds Louisianans to safely handle their turkey this holiday season.  He says it takes about 24 hours for every four to five pounds to defrost a turkey.

Strain urges Louisianans to never thaw the turkey in the sink or on the kitchen counter. He says the safest way is to thaw it in the fridge.

Governor-elect Jeff Landry has appointed Madison Sheahan as the new Secretary for the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. The 26-year-old old from Ohio and has spent the last three years working with South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem. La-politics-dot-com publisher Jeremy Alford says Landry may have felt the need to bring an outsider because former LDWF Secretary Jack Montoucet has been implicated in a bribery scandal

Montoucet resigned abruptly last April. A former contract worker in the Lafayette Parish District Attorney’s Office has pleaded guilty to his role in a scheme involving LDWF that allowed people facing felony and misdemeanor charges to pay money to avoid a pre-trial diversion program. Montoucet has not been indicted.

Alford says Landry is confident Sheahan will reshape and rebrand the department…

Livingston Parish has received $45 million in state dollars to build a disaster response rescue center. Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard says after the 2016 floods and other natural disasters they know how important it is to not only have a place to house those who are displaced…

The 100,000-square-foot Livingston Parish Emergency Response and Evacuation Center will be able to seat 5,000 people and will be located south of Livingston on LA 63 south of I-12.

Ard says he got the idea for a shelter when Hurricane Gustav struck. At the time they were able to use a newly constructed detention center that had 700 beds and no inmates yet. That’s where first responders stayed.

And it’s not only going to benefit Livingston Parish, but surrounding parishes also. Ard says the site will have space for rescue and utility vehicles and will be ideal to house linemen and National Guardsmen.

Iowa set a women’s basketball attendance record earlier this year as over 55,000 fans packed their football stadium for an exhibition game against DePaul. An eight-person jury has dismissed Sharon Lewis’s 50-million dollar federal lawsuit against LSU. Lewis, who oversaw LSU’s football recruiting department, claims she was wrongfully terminated and retaliated against for reporting sexual misconduct complaints involving former head coach Les Miles. Tiger Rag Editor Todd Horne says executive deputy athletic director Verge Ausberry was one of the last witnesses to take the stand…

Horne says Ausberry testified that Lewis had trouble when white people told her no or disagreed with her. Lewis was one of 40 workers in the football department let go when Brian Kelly was hired in December 2021.

The Louisiana Department of Children and Family Services’ new campaign is encouraging Louisianans to “Be There” for families in need this holiday season. Secretary Terri Ricks says even a small deed can make a huge impact on a child or family in your community.

DCFS assists one in four Louisianans every year including food assistance, child support services, and financial assistance.

Ricks says that currently there are more than 41 hundred children in Louisiana’s foster care. She encourages everyone to provide help or open their homes to youth who have no place to go.

This year, the 211 Statewide Network has made more than 267 thousand referrals to services. It has helped meet more than 159 thousand needs for residents.

53-year-old Lawrence J. Voisin of Houma faces two counts of first-degree rape in connection with alleged sexual abuse with a 10-year-old student. Terrebonne Parish sheriff Tim Soignet says detectives arrived at a local school where the minor reported the abuse.

During the investigation, deputies gathered evidence from the victim that suggested that Voisin was involved in a sexual relationship with the juvenile. Soignet says Voisin, who was located at his home, confessed to some of the charges.

McNally says Louisiana recorded more than two thousand overdose deaths in 2021 and fentanyl is largely to blame. Among parishes, he says per capita, there are higher numbers of cases in southwest Louisiana.

Ochsner Children’s Hospital is building a new 343 thousand square foot facility with a large donation from New Orleans Saints Owner Gayle Benson. Chief Medical Officer Dr. Butch Adolph says this will help advance the growing need to help children throughout the region.

The donation will come from the Gayle and Tom Benson Charitable Foundation, a private foundation founded in 2007 to make a positive impact.

Adolph says the new five-story structure helps continue to grow its pediatrics program and treat critical conditions such as pediatric heart and liver transplants. He says the placement of departments is easily accessible to speed up time-sensitive procedures.

The new pediatric cardiovascular unit will expand from 12 to 20 beds. The 14-bed intensive care unit will expand to 20 beds.

Ranked the number one hospital for kids in Louisiana, the current hospital cares for more than 100 thousand children every year. Adolph says a new facility will help meet the needs of more families who want their children to receive care at Ochsner…

The Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over campaign is underway. Greg Fischer with the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission says over the past five Christmas holidays in Louisiana 26 people were killed and 452 injured in vehicle crashes involving alcohol.

Fischer says the annual campaign is making a difference. According to the Center for Analytics and Research in Transportation Safety at LSU for every 1,000 hours of impaired driver patrol, there are four fewer fatalities…

In 2021, more than 40 percent of vehicle crashes in the state were alcohol-related and the number of fatalities that year was 299.

With more parties this time of year there are more impaired drivers on the road, especially at night. And Fischer says for some because the holidays can be difficult…

The LHSC helps pay for overtime so more law enforcement officers can stop impaired drivers. The campaign runs through New Year’s Day.

There’s been plenty of speculation about a special session before the regular one to address the state’s property insurance crisis next year. But at a recent NOLA-dot-com town hall meeting, Insurance Commissioner-elect Tim Temple says it’s highly unlikely…

But if and when one is called, Temple says he’ll push to get legislation introduced. He says he’s focusing on bringing property owners immediate premium relief. But stresses he’s not suggesting mandates for premium changes, because that only drives carriers away.

After the 2020 and 2021 hurricane seasons, with 800-thousand claims and $23 billion in property loss Temple says we have to acknowledge the industry was stressed and twelve companies went insolvent.

An incentive program to incite new carriers to come to the state went into effect earlier this year. Temple unfortunately says property owners won’t see the benefits immediately…

When Temple’s lone opponent withdrew from the election in the fall, Temple was named commissioner-elect. He says he’s using the extra time to meet with decision-makers so he can hit the ground running on January 8th.

The Federal Railroad Administration has awarded a 500-thousand dollar planning grant to the Southern Rail Commission. Commissioner Knox Ross says this money will determine what’s needed to bring passenger rail service to the I-20 Corridor…

The proposed rail line would connect Dallas-Fort Worth to Atlanta, with stops in Shreveport, Ruston, Monroe and Vicksburg, Mississippi. Ross says passenger rail service would bring economic development to these cities, especially their downtown areas…

McNeese State President Daryl Burckel announces his plans to leave his role by June 30th.  Burckel says it is the right time to welcome new leadership who can see the school through more growth.

During his seven years as President, he was able to bring the $40 million state-of-the-art Legacy Center to campus which seats more than four thousand people. The complex is the home to the men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball programs.

He also secured over $100 million in funding for the future campus.

Burckel led the university through major setbacks from the pandemic and natural disasters in 2020 and 2021.

In Bossier Parish, three juveniles have been arrested after an 18-year-old Houghton teen was found dead in an apartment complex parking lot Monday night. Sheriff’s Office Lt. Matt Gaydos (Gay-duss) says the suspects, whose ages are 15, 16, and 17 are from Bossier City.

Gaydos says robbery is believed to be the apparent motive for the shooting and that the suspects and the victim were acquaintances. The crime trail began in Bossier City with a stolen vehicle, a shooting in Houghton, and ended in Shreveport. Gaydos says it was a vehicle that led investigators to the suspects.

The investigation is ongoing. One of the suspects arrested early Tuesday morning has been charged with First Degree Murder. The other two were arrested later in the day.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries says the bird flu outbreak is wiping out waterfowl in the Bayou State for a second year. State Wildlife Veterinarian Dr. Jim Lacour says cases have been detected among waterfowl in the southwest and northeast parts of the state.

Qualifying for the March 23^rd, 2024, Presidential primary begins today and ends on Friday. Deputy Secretary of State for Outreach Joel Watson says any political party that has 40,000 or more members in Louisiana…

Local, municipal, parish executive committee and state central committee candidates are to qualify with the clerk of court in the parish where they are registered to vote. Judicial candidates can qualify at the Louisiana Secretary of State’s office in Baton Rouge.

As for how many candidates will be on the March ballot, Watson says it’s too early to tell.

Waston says you can watch in real-time input on the website as candidates qualify at sos-dot-la-gov. Candidates must register by 4:30 PM on Friday, December 15^th.

Today is Governor John Bel Edwards’ last monthly call-in radio show, “Ask the Governor”. Louisiana Radio Network has produced the show for the last seven years. General Manager Jim Engster says the show gave Edwards a chance to directly talk with Louisianans.

On the first day of testimony, a witness claimed LSU running backs coach Frank Wilson made unwanted sexual advances against her when she was an intern in the football recruiting office. Horne says Jessie testified that another student employee lost her job after complaining about being sexually harassed and did not want to lose her job, despite receiving inappropriate gifts from Wilson…

Lewis is suing the university claiming her attempts to report sexual misconduct against student interns involving former LSU Coach Les Miles and Wilson resulted in a hostile work environment for her and it also impacted her pay.

An attorney representing LSU said in opening arguments that Lewis has no evidence of this drama and is only attempting to profit from a coaching change situation when 40 people lost their jobs.

Sexual harassment allegations against Wilson first surfaced in March 2022 and LSU said at that time they were unaware of these allegations and there is no evidence they were reported to LSU.

A nine-person jury is hearing the case and testimony is expected to last until December 22nd.

Wade has not coached a game since March of 2022 and he was suspended for the first 10 games of this season because of recruiting violations that led to his firing in Baton Rouge. Wade is a fiery coach on the sidelines, but after some time away, he might be a little calmer…

However, he’s quick to point out that homicides for 2022 were among the highest for the last three decades and this year’s murder rate is still higher than those from 2019 to 2021.

MCC says shootings are down 22-percent, carjackings down 46-percent, and armed robbery has declined 34-percent from this time last year.

Even with a sizable loss of law enforcement officers, down approximately 25-percent since 2018, Goyeneche credits the NOPD’s return to proactive policing for the reduction in violent crime…

He says the pandemic limited proactive policing.

Goyeneche says prioritizing arrests of those carrying weapons illegally and/or drugs is reflected in the reduction of violent crime because they are not out on the streets.

In 2018 NOPD had approximately 1,200 officers in 2023 the number had dwindled to 900.

Goyeneche is also hopeful the partnership with Republican Governor-elect Jeff Landry and Democrat Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams will continue the crime reduction.

AAA predicts 115 million people will be on the move over the Christmas and New Year’s holiday, the second highest year-end holiday travel recorded. Spokesperson Don Redman says that’s a two percent increase over last year and most will travel by vehicle

Caddo Parish Sheriff candidate Henry Whitehorn loses his appeal as the election drama continues. The 2^nd Circuit Court of Appeals upheld a lower court’s ruling granting Republican John Nickelson another election after he lost to Whitehorn by one vote in November.  Political analyst Scott Hughes says it was a split three-two decision.

For the case to advance, Hughes says you have to have to prove a new argument because this case mirrors the precedent set in the 1999 Red River Parish Sheriff’s race.

A Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agent receives North America’s highest honor for civilian heroism, the Carnegie Medal. In 2022, Sergeant Stephen Rhodes saved nine people including a seven-year-old girl when their boat capsized. He says he didn’t hesitate, removed his gear, and jumped in the water.

And after two rounds of CPR, Rhodes says she began to show signs of life. The young girl was airlifted to a New Orleans hospital and made a full recovery.

Rhodes says he began May 7, 2022, on a boat patrol in Golden Meadow when he received a call about a possible shrimp violation on Grand Isle. He was nearby writing up a ticket when the boat flipped.

After nearly three years of construction, LSU Health Shreveport has unveiled its $79 million Center for Medical Education. Dr. David Lewis Dean of the School of Medicine says the center brings innovative learning techniques to north Louisiana seen at major universities nationwide…

The new center’s 155-square-foot structure also includes teaching spaces, a 500-seat auditorium, and a Wellness Center.

While the center received more than 26 million dollars from the Louisiana Legislature last year, Lewis says more than a third of the cost was supported by partnerships and the community.

An important component of the building is the more than 11 thousand square foot Center for Emerging Viral Threats research, education, and training facility. The research space will help in advanced research on viral pathogens and molecular testing for different viruses.

Lewis says this facility gives Shreveport advantage to compete for top-tier students from both near and far.

The Top Ten 2023 baby names for Louisiana are out. Baton Rouge General Communications Manager Katie Johnston says the name Ivy for a girl grew in popularity, from 37th the year before to 13th in the state and it’s the fifth most popular in the capital city.

Ivy is the name of a Taylor Swift song on the album Evermore. Johnston says pop culture has an impact on baby names. Last year Maverick was a popular boy name after the release of Top Gun: Maverick.
