The officer who was fatally shot has been identified as 58-year-old Vinny Libertor, a Mandeville Police Department captain, who leaves behind a wife and seven children. He joined the force in 1994 after a decorated military career.

The second officer has suffered non-life threatening injuries. 21-year-old Mark Spicer of Covington has been charged with first-degree murder of a police officer and other charges. A passenger in his vehicle sustained minor injuries.

State Police says the whole incident started when a Mandeville Police officer initiated a traffic stop on Spicer’s vehicle.

The Edwards administration says the state’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate is at an eleven-year low of 4.3 percent. Kevin Barnhart has the story.
